Feel so sorry for her, she is in real discomfort.

I can see the poo coming out but it keeps going back in.

She had tummy bug last week and has not really pooed for two days and normally goes twice a day.

How can I help her get this poo out.

She wont eat, Ive been encouraging drinks and just about to give her a warm bath to see if that helps.

Any advice would be really appreciated.

Thanks

might be old wives tale but a drink as warm as possible with sugar in it?
i actually find a little bit of chocolate gets my dd going when she is constipated.

PictureThis · 13/07/2008 19:59

how old is she?

dramaqueen · 13/07/2008 20:00

Put her in a hot bath, then sit her on the loo. If she's not gone by tomorrow take her to the docs and get some meds.

nancy75 · 13/07/2008 20:00

or get her to lay on her back while you move her legs as if she is pedalling a bike

MamaG · 13/07/2008 20:01

try try TRY to get some syrup of figs into her. It works a dream.

If she's teeny tiny, try to gently "pinch" the poo through the skin to break it down (great job being a mum isn't it) - My Mum did this for my DS when he was a couple of weeks old and he managed to poo it out

PictureThis · 13/07/2008 20:01

what i mean is is she a baby?

babytime · 13/07/2008 20:01

she is two

tried all the tricks i did when she was little, legs to tummy and cycling legs.

apple juice.

nobodysfool · 13/07/2008 20:03

Massage your baby's tummy

Start at the belly button and then massage outwards in circles in a clockwise direction. Some oil or cream on your fingers can also help.

Only continue if your baby enjoys the massage and is comfortable and relaxed.

Move your baby's legs in a cycling motion

Place your baby so he or she is lying on their back. Hold their legs and turn them gently in a quick cycling motion.

This will make the stomach muscles move and, in turn, put gentle pressure on the intestines to make them move.

Give your baby a bath

A warm bath can make your baby relax so the stools are passed more easily. Once your baby has relaxed in the bath, you can also massage their stomach (see above).

When you wash your baby's bottom, apply some cream or petroleum jelly (Vaseline) around the outside of the anus.

I did all the above fro my ds and it had the desired effect.Hope things get moving soon.

lactulose

lots of water or fruit juice

bit of vaseline to help smooth the way out

katpotat · 13/07/2008 20:03

Warm bath, tummy massage, bicycling her legs, how old is she?. Same prob with DD 14 months, Dr's resorted to precribing enema in the end, traumatic but effective Somethimes we put her on the potty, good position to help pooing. Hope she's better soon

posieflump · 13/07/2008 20:04

lactulose

lots of water

then just leave, it wil come out on it's own, don't fret. Going twice a day is quite a lot, it;s fine to go once every 2 days, you might be more panicked then she is

PictureThis · 13/07/2008 20:08

massaging the tummy in a clockwise motion, warm sugary drink and warm bath should help

my gran would swear by vaseline on a cotton bud

yomellamoHelly · 13/07/2008 20:10

When ds2 struggles like this I take off his nappy when he's straining and hold his legs in to his chest. A friend of mine was told to hold her son in a sitting position when he was straining.
I also tend to give him a drink at the same time as the sucking action seems to help speed things up too.

Very soapy bath or Vaseline eases the path so to speak. Had to do this for ds when a nb on gp advice.

babytime · 13/07/2008 20:22

hi

still no joy

gave warm bath but she was crying to get out.

put lots of vaselinea round her anus but did not use a cotton bud - not sure if i could do that - yikes!

did the sun and moon massge on her tummy and the paddle boat (remember from baby classes)

We have no fig syrup, fruit or fruit juice in the house tonight. we are low on everything and had a day out today instead of planned food shop - typical!!!

she has never been constipated like this.

give her 4 oz cool boiled water with 1 teaspoon brown sugar dissolved into it. this solution acts like lactulose

babytime · 13/07/2008 20:27

will try that now - thanks

dissolve the sugar while that water is still hot then let it cool (dissolves much better this way)

nobodysfool · 13/07/2008 20:37

I used to lay ds down use a warm flannel on his anus.Just gently massaging it with slight heat helped him to relax enough to poo.

murcimari · 13/07/2008 21:33

Gosh, that reminds me so much of what we went through with our DD just recently. She was in absolute agony (. The only thing that worked in the end was glycerol suppositories - they do a children?s version. I'd say within 10 minutes of "insertion" we finally had RESULT!! She was sooooo relieved!!!

Lactulose only works after 2-3 days I'm afraid.

emma1977 · 13/07/2008 21:38

I was also going to suggest glycerine suppositories- they work well at stimulating the rectum to expel its contents!

babytime · 13/07/2008 22:02

hello

will def stock up om some glycerine suppositories tomorrow.

i made up the water and sugar solution and she got so cross when she tasted it like I had tricked her. she shouted "That yuck mummy" and it took me ages to convince her her beaker had plain water in it

She managed to get some out and then nothing would come after so she was tired she has gone to bed.

Feel so sorry for her because she ate next to nothing for dinner.

Poor little thing - I really felt for her.

Thanks for all your advice - knew I could rely on mumsnet x
