Many many apologies if this has been discussed in great detail in the past...but dd is just going to turn one next week and am wondering what pros and cons there are to having her MMR jab.is it really necessary?or is she better off not having it done

So why are they not investigating the possibility that a subset group of children may be affected. Is it because they have already made up their minds?

I must admit that I have a horror of small research samples being used to suggest changes to medical care for an entire population.
Didn't Andrew Wakefield say after his research that children should have single jabs? If he did it's pretty appalling given that the research was based on so few children - as an experienced researcher he would have known that you cannot take such a small sample and extrapolate the findings to the whole population. If he did say this and has now changed his mind that is pretty bad. Nevertheless it does suggest that further research in this area would be worthwhile so why isn't it being done.

The other incidence that I always remember of research findings into a small number of children which was extrapolated to the entire child population was the finding that prem. babies should be nursed on their tummies. This quickly became the standard advice to the entire population and was disasterous and fatal to some children.
For me there will still need to be a whole lot more proof that there is a subset of children affected BUT the research DOES need to be done to either confirm this or to put everyone's mind at rest. I can't understand why it isn't. I suspect though that the mistrust is so much that many will never be convinced.

Imagine how disasterous it would be for the entire vax program if a link was found. Same reason thimerosal is still officially perfectly safe- whether or not you happen to be prone tp autoimmunity.

Providing the collateral damage remains small not enough people care or are affected,

Just think it is appalling if there possibly is a link between thimerosal and autism (or anything else for that matter). Terrible if they are not investigating because there may be a link which'll damage their imms programme. One child damaged is one too many.

Just wondering, could anyone tell me what it is about the mmr that might trigger autism in a small group of children that have the jab? Am currently in the dilemma of whether to give the jab or not and go with singles

jabberwocky · 07/03/2005 01:15

It's my understanding that it is the combination. Of course, now that they are combining so many others that takes on greater significance if true. Ds is about to start singles. Personally, it seemed like the best compromise.
