Isn't it funny that we don't have a thread about mooncups in ages...

... then several come along at once.

I was just thinking today that we have not had a good mooncup thread for ages. There must be lots of newbies to convert.

How often do you do the boiling / sterilising bit?

FrannyandZooey · 06/07/2008 10:48

once in between cycles is fine for sterilising

otherwise you just wash / rinse each time you empty

they really are very comfortable when you get the hang of them and so much cleaner and just all round more pleasant than other forms of sanpro

DustyTV · 06/07/2008 12:18

I have bitten the bullet and ordered one

ManxMum · 06/07/2008 20:18

I did the trips to A&E and the practice nurse, neither had heard of mooncups, but gots lots of info off me whilst they were removing mine.
I so reall want to crack the removal bit, as it is the best thing I have ever used, no leaks, no yuckky feeling. I could just forget it all and onl had to empty every eight hours!

MmeLindt · 07/07/2008 19:38

Well done Dusty.

Oh, dear. Was it very embarrassing? I am the same though, that I can leave it in for hours, even going out for a whole day without thinking about it. You do need to crack the getting it out trick though, I don't think the trip to the practice nurse is very pratical every time.

Had my smear today (my dh calls it "your smudge test") and mentioned to the practice nurse that my periods were lighter and pain free. I mentioned that it could be because I was using a mooncup - and she had never heard of one. I was quite surprised about that.

girlandboy · 07/07/2008 19:51

Oh yes, I forgot, I put loo paper in the toilet first else the blood pools at the bottom.
Month 3 of mooncup and all is well apart from one small mishap. I dropped it upon removal!! Quick walk to washing machine with bathmat. Don't want to put any newbies off, just to say you must keep a firm grip on the slippy little sucker.

JaneHH · 07/07/2008 20:23

I have been converted, ladies! Will be popping into Boots to find one sharpish. The testimonials (and argumentation for when you're not sure) on the website are very good, let alone all the posts on MN. I had never heard of them before getting addicted to joining MN. Funny how little coverage they get. Well I suppose not, given the subject matter (men won't want to know).

Only concerned about public loos but I suppose if you wash your hands before going in and make sure you rinse later on that day then it's OK? Funnily enough this does clear something up for me from the weekend, when I heard the lady in the cubicle next to me putting the top back on a bottle of something and I couldn't for the life of me think what someone would be doing filling a bottle of water with wee or somesuch

MmeLindt · 07/07/2008 20:57

lol, Jane, she might even of been a MNetter.

I don't bother to rinse if I am in a public loo, just empty and pop it back in again. I only need to do that on really heavy days though, normally I can go all day if need be.

Actually this was in Holland - so word is spreading!

ManxMum · 07/07/2008 22:01

Boots were £19.99 try looking on the web, saw one at £15.99

sandy4 · 08/07/2008 09:37

Have just bought a mooncup .

Haven't used it yet, but would like to know how sucessful they are when swimming??

MmeLindt · 08/07/2008 14:43

I haven't used one when swimming but will shamelessly bump this for someone who has...

Sam100 · 08/07/2008 14:48

I love my mooncup and was converted by MN! I have used it swimming - no problems - much better than when using tampons as always feel that need to change a tampon as soon as you get out of the pool as it is soggy! Also have found that menstrual cramps much reduced since using mooncup.

JaneHH · 08/07/2008 19:57

Btw would anyone recommend a mooncup to someone going travelling round the world for 6 months? A friend of mine here is going travelling and I thought this might be good for her for all those moments when you're on some disgusting train somewhere and don't really want to have to change your tampon... Would it be more or less hygienic than tampons, do you think?

MmeLindt · 10/07/2008 18:40

Hmm, I would say better than tampons as she just has to empty it out, not try to dispose of it somewhere. If she has a little bottle of water to wash it out as often as she can manage, then that should be enough.

And she would not have to try to buy tampons in which ever country she was in.

I don't know how remote she is going to be, but when I am going on holiday I take one of those microwave sterilising bags (for babies bottles or dummies) with me to sterilise my mooncup.

EyeballsintheSky · 10/07/2008 18:42

Mine arrived today, unfortunately too late for this time...although as I peered at it with some trepidation, I'm not sure it'll see next time either...

marram · 10/07/2008 19:49

Does it really help with cramps, even ones that were actually as bad as full blown labour? I have just had my AF return after a glorious 32 months of well-deserved absence and, having read what Janey Lee Grace says about tampons I feel sick at the thought of using them now.

JaneHH · 10/07/2008 21:05

Mme thanks for the tip about the microwave thingey, good idea.

Marram, what does Janey Lee Grace say about tampons...?

marram · 11/07/2008 10:10

Janey is concerned about the chemicals used in the production of tampons. She discusses it in her book Imperfectly Natural Woman pp29-32. She talks of fears of the presence of dioxins and of toxic shock syndrome, though she is vague with no info on studies to back it up. She raves about the Mooncup believing that it reduces pain and blood flow. She wonders whether tampons dehydrate the vaginal area which causes some of the pain.

JaneHH · 13/07/2008 23:08

OK thanks marram - mooncup has been purchased but yet to be tried out...

Kelix · 13/07/2008 23:32

Think I've been converted, will get down to Boots ASAP

BibiThree · 13/07/2008 23:37

I absolutely love mine. It sat in the bthroom cabinet for 3 years before I used it, but now I CAN'T DO WITHOUT IT.ooops, caps

zazen · 13/07/2008 23:53

I have a love hate relationship with my mooncup - when I have no period I love it, oh yes I do, in an earth mother eco warrior kindof way, and when I have my period I hate it.

I have really heavy flow and have to change it so often, it leaks (I bought a large and a small sized one as I thought I had the wrong size, and they both leak) and I end up in agony trying to push it out / break the seal, fold it, pull it - without spilling blood everywhere. Looks like a mixture of Sweeny Todd and Lady Macbeth. Blood and gore'sville, with grunting sound effects.

And I found that they didn't reduce pain - actually they increased it as I think I bruised my urethra getting it out, and I've tried different 'heights' to push it, and can feel it all the time.

So this jury member is out. Any suggestions for this earth mother wannabe?

BTW has anyone seen the sheewee? sheewee.com for standing up piddling?
