If someone cam to you with symptoms like this;

-Extreme shortness of breath.
-Tight feeling around chest (Like a clamp) when breathing.
-Dizzyness.
-Visual disturbances, occasionally with head aches/migraines.
-Generally feeling a bit out of sorts.

....and that person had a medical history like this;

-Congenital heart problem (Leaking valve and enlarged heart)
-Glaucoma.

....and that person is over weight by about a stone and a half, but exercises and eats a balanced healthy diet with the occasional treat and doesn't smoke.

What would you say it could be???? My GP says it is because I am overweight and nothing else.

TIA

am not a doc so wouldn't know. did he not run any tests?

DustyTV · 03/07/2008 18:06

Nope, no tests, she just said to me loose weight and basically wouldn't enter into a convo with me, so I left.

could you see another doc at same practice? it might be a panic attack but it might not, docs have duty of care to all patients not just ones that fit their prejudices.

lulumama · 03/07/2008 18:08

1.5 stone overweight is not that bad, and should not be causing such health issues

especially re the breathing

with the congenital heart issues, i would be seeing another doctor and asking for a second opinion.

even if you lose weight, you are unwell NOW and losing weight is not instant.

I could but they are a husband and wife team and I went to the Mrs as she is the nicer of the two.

I got it all yesterday, and for a bit this afternoon. My chest actually hurts now.

andiem · 03/07/2008 18:11

did she listen to your heart and lungs?
are you on any medication?

DustyTV · 03/07/2008 18:12

It also happened one day last month and I ended up in A&E but felt better after about an hour there so they let me come home.

I even checked to see if I could be PG just to rule it out but I'm not.

I tend not to concerntrate too much on how much I weigh and don't worry about it as long as I eat healthily and balanced the majority of the time.

I might go in again and ask that she just check me over too be sure.

I should get it checked, if your not happy with your gp try a walk in centre.

cedar12 · 03/07/2008 18:15

They are usually open to at least 9pm

sounds like it could be anxiety or panic related
but worrying about it won't help

can you go back and explain that you are worried, taht there is a history of congenital heart problems and you aer concerend, adn would appreciate a bit of an MOT as it were!

JodieG1 · 03/07/2008 18:18

I would go to a&e.

Twiglett · 03/07/2008 18:21

I'd go to A&E and get them to rule out heart problems but accept that it could also be panic attacks

I'd change doctors too .. you should at least have had your BP taken and pulse checked and chest checked and possibly been sent for a trace

andiem · 03/07/2008 18:28

dusty I think she should have done a basic physical examination with your history especially bp listening to heart and chest I would either try to see another doc or if you feel acutely unwell now go to a+e and explain your symptoms
hope you feel better soon

bubblagirl · 03/07/2008 18:29

i've been having very similar things but had all checks done and was ok turns out to be stress related so have to train my breathing as really struggle at times but apparently its become a habit

but i would go get it checked and have all tests done first before dismissing it as anything else

DustyTV · 03/07/2008 19:02

I don't feel ill enough to go to A&E, TBH I don't really feel ill at all IYSWIM. Just out of sorts.

Does it really sound like it could be panic attacks. I don't feel stressed or anything.

I'll ring GP tomorrow and ask to see her again and maybe get her to do a general MOT.

Thanks all.

What's your blood pressure doing?

noting your history you'd have thought just an ECG would be done.

ask for a referral to cardiologist. or if there is one in your area a Rapid Access Chest Pain Clinic. They'd do an exercise toerence test and ECGs and echo and all that.

If yo ask a GP for a referral to a specialist with a good reason they have to refer on.

DustyTV · 03/07/2008 19:05

I don't know cod, I don't even know what glandular fever is

How are you feeling now?

OP posts:
DustyTV · 03/07/2008 19:11

Nigella, I had an echo done just before and just after I had given birth to DD and all was generally well. My cardiologist said that my heart has deteriorated slightly, but said could be due to either age or pregnancy and birth.

I had an ECG done last month while I was in A&E and all was fine. The nurse did my BP when I was there and said it was fine.

I might ring my cardiologists reception and see if they could fit me in at any point.

Do that and get eyes checked too.

panic and anxiety cn feel much like that too. the chest squeeze, breathlessness, dizzyness etc.

but best to get existing problems properly cecked

belgo · 03/07/2008 19:19

Yes getting yourself checked by your cardiologist is a good idea.
