Why all of a sudden can I not tolerate underwired bras?

And I mean really can't tolerate it, it makes me so uncomfortable and irritable, anyone else find this happened to them?

I have never been able to wear them. I only wear bralettes.

loveyoutothemoon · Yesterday 21:29

Thank you. I've always been fine with them until now though.

Yes, definitely. It was age with me. I got to my 50s and just couldn't bear them any longer.

JudyTeeny · Yesterday 21:49

Yes when I got to about 60 I found them suddenly very uncomfortable. I got fitted at Bravissimo and M&S for some non wired bras and at home I wear a bralette

Toastietoastie · Yesterday 21:49

I've found this post pregnancy - didn't breast feed for reference. I can wear them the odd day but mostly bralettes for me. They feel like they are giving me chest pains!

NormaSnickers · Yesterday 21:50

It was pregnancy for me, I switched to non wired as they were more comfortable and have never been able to wear under wired again - soooo uncomfortable I wonder how I ever wore them! DS is 14…

Any weight loss or gain? Small fluctuations make a huge difference to me - I have a different set for around my period.

PumpkinWanker · Yesterday 21:52

Have you changed size? My old ones irritated me after going to the gym for a few months and increased my back muscles had to go up a back size.

ithinkthereforeyouarewrong · Yesterday 21:57

Yes in my forties they became very uncomfortable so I switched to honeylove

ineedsun1 · Yesterday 22:01

Yes! It was like overnight! In my 30’s. Had to switch to bralettes.

seahorsessky · Yesterday 22:05

Has your size increased? This is very common and might be why for a lot of us.

teachermum28 · Yesterday 22:10

Same as others. Pregnancy for me and breastfeeding for years. Just hated going back to underwired bras.

loveyoutothemoon · Yesterday 22:46

Thank you for all the replies. Yes I've put on a bit of weight so I got new bigger bras and it's still happening. (Underwired again, just thought the bigger bras would be enough). I'm menopausal too. I bought non wired too but I feel like I'm lacking the support, I have saggy tits!!

It was menopause that did for my underwires (when I was about 47). I switched to M&S padded bralettes - so comfy and give a little bit of support.

PickAChew · Yesterday 22:55

Post menopause for me. I'm hypermobile and my ribs and shoulders object strongly to any pressure.

I go braless as much as possible and when I don't want it to be obvious they're sitting on my belly alternate with a slightly too big M&S sports bra and a Doreen delicate (much prettier than the fearsome full fat Doreen but still gives good support)

Chaostheory12 · Yesterday 22:58

I found this happened to me about two years ago .All bras are uncomfortable now but wired are completely intolerable. I'm not sure why. I take my bra off at home and only wear non wired ones now .

Redrosesposies · Yesterday 23:03

After years of wearing lovely Triumph underwired minimisers with no problem as they actually kept my low slung nipples in place, I have recently bought some cheap jelly bras. So comfortable and supportive and lightly padded so the nipples don't show. I am a 38/40dd/e and the 2xl is a perfect fit. I think without the padding an XL would be big enough but then there's no support or nipple coverage.
The only minor issue is the lack of separation (so an occasionally sweaty cleavage) but it's a small price to pay.

strictlybusinessuntildecember · Yesterday 23:03

Happened to me in my late 30s - the underwire became uncomfortable and I ended up with a subcutaneous cyst - haven’t been able to wear one since

justasking111 · Yesterday 23:04

The consultant who checked my mammogram said two things. Stop wearing underwired unless you're wearing a low cut outfit, and wear a bra at night for support.

I've gone over to bra vests now don't like bra straps digging in, even wireless.

Cheeseplantalltheway · Yesterday 23:18

Perimenopause/ menopause. Can't be doing with uncomfortable clothing any more.

heroofalexandria · Yesterday 23:34

I had costochondritus (sp?) a few years back. Agony and took ages to calm down. Ever since then I can’t tolerate underwire.

Also do not miss the rare but awful moment you get stabbed by a washed too many times bra when the underwire makes a break for freedom. Happened to me once in the first 5 mins of a very important meeting. Had to sit being stabbed for 2 hours before I could get to the loo and fashion a toilet roll bandage

If you like your current bras and it is just the under wire that is making them unbearable you can carefully remove the underwire and the bra is then a comfortable non wire. I have been doing that for years and the small holes left by removing the wires are not noticeable and have never grown into gaping holes

Genius! Can't believe I hadn't thought of it. So you get the same support/uplift?

Wonkywalker · Today 05:29

@Lumpyteats - yes , I find there is no difference to the fit ( other than they don't dig in ) . It can be a bit of a delve to get the wire out but well worth it!
