Has anyone got this lingering illness going round?

Ughh … been unwell for over a week now.

Started with a sore throat, then streaming nose, hacking cough, night sweats, and now left with fatigue and ‘heavy chest’. Just when I thought it was slightly subsiding I’ve now got completely blocked ears and haven’t slept a wink. My ears feel weirdly muffled and deeply blocked, in a weird way I haven’t really experienced before.

I’m just so over it all.

I did a Covid and flu lateral flow test early on but they both came back negative. Anyone else experiencing similar?

I didn’t realise there was a flu lateral test.

ive done no tests

symptoms started last Tues:
fatigue
sore throat
temperature
cough
mouth ulcers
nose bleeds (I have never had nosebleeds in my life before)
occasional sneezing and nose blowing
painful chest

at the moment can’t sleep due to the cough - dry irritating cough … appetite has been low but ok. Worst thing has been lack of energy and just feeling like my body failing on me!

get well soon!

I had a very heavy cold like this. Made the mistake of bouncing to normal too soon and felt absolutely wiped out. Also had the heavy chest and sinus pains plus headache. I fell fine now. Took about ten days to finally go.
Get well soon.

Yep this is very similar, nosebleed too.

We had a couple of spare tests hanging around so I thought I’d do one, they are pretty old now so maybe not accurate.

My ears are completely blocked and coughs come back. I’ve just steamed but no luck unblocking ears yet.

I’m on day 12 of illness. Fed up now.

Sounds like my DD! She started with sore throat, headache, runny nose, (maybe a cough, I can't recall!) and feeling chilly. This lasted nearly 10 days before earache started and the pharmacist advised she had an ear infection 😩she's only really getting back to herself now, 3 weeks on! Hope you feel better soon!

SquishyCheeseandOrangeWigs · 22/10/2026 12:04

Oh I could write you a book about this lately! Mine started mid August with what I thought was an ear infection, prescribed antibiotics, fast forward a week and I was in searing pain and a typical ‘cold’ to be told it was a virus with neuralgia and it’ll get better. That led to a worsening cold, HSV(?) (cold sores which I’ve never had!) mouth ulcers, impetigo and generally pretty beat up immune system catching everything going. The worst part of it all is the exhaustion, I’ve never felt tiredness like it and no amount of sleep makes it any better! Thankfully I’m on the up now and nearing the end (fingers crossed) starting to feel like myself again but the lack of energy and the brain fog has been been quite horrendous!

Yes! The exhaustion and neuralgia.

@Tabby30 sorry to hear you are so poorly this is what my husband had and was initially tested negative for Covid but a few few days later he was still rough. I went and bought some fresh Test apparently they only test for this current strain so you do need new ones you can get them from Amazon good luck.

RafaistheKingofClay · 22/10/2026 15:09

I’d put money on this being Covid. The false neg rates on the lateral flow tests have always been quite high. There is a fairly big wave among adults in the uk right now.

I returned to the GP last week to run through some blood results linked to my illnesses and he suspected it was the current strain of Covid which is quite nasty and the lingering affects can take up to 3 months to dissipate, though I didn’t test for it so no way to know. It’s very unpleasant if so!

RafaistheKingofClay · 22/10/2026 18:06

It’s spreading through work like wildfire whatever it is. Covid is the only thing I’ve known that spreads round there this fast.

ThereWillBeSun · 22/10/2026 18:19

I’ve had it, I am absolutely certain it was Covid but my test came up negative as well – and they were new ones. I’ve had to take time off work and that is pretty much unheard of for me.

Mh67 · 22/10/2026 18:28

Genuine question why test for covid. If it was positive what good does that information do as its just treated same way as a cold now.

brownbootsandhats · 22/10/2026 18:29

Over a week isn’t really that long for many viruses

especially in a culture / abusive working environment where rest and recovery are frowned upon

Not for some - i have to get iv antivirals if I have covid. Definitely not treated like a cold.

clopertyclop · 22/10/2026 20:28

Yep, I’m on day 8 and feel as bad as I did on day 1!

Flidina · 22/10/2026 20:40

My DH and DD have had it for 10 days now, my DD went to the Drs as she has chronic health conditions and was really ill and they tested her for Covid and it was positive so my DH tested and he too was positive.its taking some time for them to shake it off, they start feeling a bit better , then it all goes down hill again fast. Going they both pick up soon.

It's worth signing up to "flu survey" for the UKHSA it's a weekly survey that helps them monitor respiratory symptoms and prevalence etc

I'm not sure that's correct. I used an old test this morning and the red line came up strongly as soon as the liquid touched it.

I have the broken glass throat that this new strain is known for headache and weirdly painful eyes and earache.

RunningJo · 22/10/2026 23:43

im entering week 3 of it.
Started with sore throat, and ear ache.
constant runny nose.
then the cough started and the very snotty nose.
I’ve just got the cough and a mild sore throat.
I’m ready for it to be done now.

allthingsprettyinpink · Yesterday 01:09

I’ve been like this for a couple of weeks and I tested positive for Covid last week, only tested to prove myself right., negative now but it’s still lingering unless I’ve got a second illness. Covid is rife at the minute where I am.

Why does somebody always say this? It's not just a cold, clearly even just going on the posts above. I have cancer and Covid could have a devastating impact on my health - I would hope the people around me would test before coming to see me. It also means I can get access to antivirals that may save my life. People visiting elderly relatives in care homes need to test too.
