I have similar ones from burn scars on my arms, and they only show up when I’m tanned.

Hotdoughnut · 01/07/2026 15:19

Following as I have a couple on my forearm too!

Scars or mild vitiligo? I have vitiligo just on one hand and arm

How long has it been there? Is it shiny? If shiny, I'd assume scars (hot fat from cooking for example).

Does it fade / flare / get red at times? Maybe a fungal infection like tinea versicolour? Common when it's been hot, easily treated with a bottle of ketoconazole shampoo.

I am NOT a medic though!!

It’s loss of pigment and harmless. I’ve got a few.

TallulahBetty · 01/07/2026 15:21

I have a few too. Mild loss of pigmentation for whatever reason.

I have similar. Do you have very dry skin? Mine is very dry and sometimes gets little patches that have peeled. I think now you'd got a tan they are more obvious as the new skin is more pale?? I tried to get a photo but the lighting here is very poor and wasn't showing up!

MargoLivebetter · 01/07/2026 15:23

It is most probably idiopathic guttate hypomelanosis, (IGH) a common condition characterised by the presence of numerous, small, white macules found predominantly on the shins and forearms.

My shins are covered in them. Caused by age and sun damage.

BertieBotts · 01/07/2026 15:25

I have them too. I came across the idea a few years ago that they could be chicken pox scars. That makes sense to me, I know I had chicken pox when I was about 4, like most of the UK population. I can't obviously remember where my spots were but it wouldn't be surprising if they had scarred.

Not sure they are burns as round shaped and multiple but did think of that but not sure they are

Thanks @Dinosaurdiva . They are not really dry but i do suffer from eczema but not had any on this area for decades.

@TallulahBetty good to know I’m not the only one… I’m 50 is it an age thing?

I did wonder if it could be this. One of the spots is just under 1cm so wasn’t sure if it was too big.

I doubt it - I've had them since I was 30ish

MargoLivebetter · 01/07/2026 15:33

@Countrystroll I had some pre-cancerous moles gouged out not so long ago and I asked the consultant dermatologist what were the millions of white speckles on my legs and arms and he told me they were IGH.

Obviously I'm not a consultant derm, hence saying that they might be those, but that is what mine look like - only I have so many more and I'm darker skinned than you, so they look even more obvious!!! I look like a speckled egg 😂.

Possiblyfamous · 01/07/2026 15:34

It’s an aging thing….

MooBaggage · 01/07/2026 15:37

I've got these! I'm in my late 50's now and can confirm they seem to get more visible with age 🤷‍♀️

ginasevern · 01/07/2026 15:39

Sun damage, old burn/insect bite marks or (most likely) general age related loss of pigmentation. I'm fair skin, freckled and have mild eczema. I've got lots of these exactly where you have OP. I'm nearly 70 now but I've had them since I was at least in my 30's.

Edited to say they are more pronounced when I've got a bit of a tan.

Yetone · 01/07/2026 15:39

Yes, I have them. I am in my early 70s but I have had them for at least 20 years. I have been told they are due to loss of pigment from too much sunbathing.
My message to my younger self would have been to stay out of the sun. It just makes you wrinkled.

ThatAquaRobin · 01/07/2026 15:42

Pityriasis versicolor

Farkinhell · 01/07/2026 15:42

I have the same on my legs. Excuse stubble. Fairly sure it's just pigmentation (loss of, rather than excess of that I got on my face during peri menopause

I have loads on my arms some quite big that show up when I pick up any hint of tan, mine are chicken pox scars as I had very bad chicken pox as an adult

Planting · 01/07/2026 16:14

Iv`e got loads of them all over my body, also i have pink pigments all over me.

RoseOliviaAu · 01/07/2026 16:16

Most people have those. Basically the opposite of freckles - one is an excess of melanin in one spot and the other an absence.
