Is having a daily nap a bad thing?

Im 60, happy and active. I work from home in a stressful job and nearly every day I go to bed for an hour at lunchtime and sleep. I mentioned it to a friend who told me in no uncertain terms that she thinks that is weird . I've never really thought about it before and now I'm wondering if it is? I dont tend to do it at weekends and wonder if its my body's way of dealing with the work stress? I'd welcome any thoughts

It’s a beautiful thing. My routine for years has been 40 mins just before the school run. Ear plus in, weighted blanket on, out like a light. I wake up ready for anything.

Twinmum0822 · 13/06/2026 17:45

Nothing wrong with it. For the first time in months I got back in bed yesterday after the school run and napped off and on until midday. It was bliss. So peaceful! Ahd I needed it. Nothing wrong with taking care of yourself

Hooray - love it that the consensus is it’s ok. Some people and some articles are weird!

I’m 86 and sleep flat out for about one and a half hours around 4.00pm quite often (not on holiday). I am listening to my body and feel wonderful afterwards.

if you do a natural sleep cycle of your own (usually one and a half to two hours) at a time appropriate for you, you won’t feel groggy because you will surface naturally and have concluded the cycle. I do realise not everyone can do this or needs to.

I nap all the (4) days I'm not at work :)

Tuesdayschild50 · 13/06/2026 18:53

Nothing weird about it.. its your body's way of saying it needs to de-stress.
Your friend sounds weird for saying its weird.

perlana · 13/06/2026 18:56

It is perfectly normal. As pp said it is practically mandatory in hot countries!

I don't nap though. I never feel the need, if I did I would though, no question. I'm retired and I thankfully sleep very well at night most of the time, so don't feel I need a nap during the day. So whatever works for you!

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 13/06/2026 18:58

A daily nap is excellent. 👍🏻

I do it too quite often…

Taking a midday slumber siesta is completely normal, deeply rooted in many cultures&scientifically proven to boost alertness, memory, & overall cognitive performance-It’s Globally Normalized-Millions of people practice the "siesta" culture&habitual napping is even linked to better overall brain health&reduced stress. It’s Backed by Experts: CDC Fatigue Countermeasure, stress a brief period of daytime sleep helps restore alertness, improves learning&enhances focus
The Hour-Long Nap is a Tool: 60- to 90-minute power nap is fantastic for catching up on a missed sleep deficit&boosting creativity. If you wake feeling groggy, it's simply "sleep inertia," which happens when waking from deep sleep&is completely normal

Definitely not weird at all! Lots of people have an afternoon nap!

volcanicFlower84 · 13/06/2026 19:20

I’m 42 and have been cat napping for years. My husband thinks it’s hilarious as I can be utterly exhausted, fall asleep for 15-20 minutes, eyes ping open and I’m off again. 🤣

tommyhoundmum · 13/06/2026 19:23

The best thing I remembered from infants school was having a nap after lunch.

KurtCobainLover · 13/06/2026 19:24

I have a 20 mins nap in between getting in from work and doing the school run. I get up at 4.30am to do a 5.30am gym class and wouldn’t get through the day without my little snooze.

7238SM · 13/06/2026 19:26

Do you have sleep apnoea OP? How do you sleep at night? Any deficiencies?

If those have all been checked and are fine, then no reason not to nap if you need to.

TheBlueKoala · 13/06/2026 19:28

I have a nap everyday and I'm 46 and don't even work.

Myli1 · 13/06/2026 19:39

I quite often have a nap on the sofa in the afternoon, it’s generally no more than about forty or fifty minutes though before I’m awake again. I get up for work at 5:30am every weekday though so I reckon I deserve a nap later! 😀

FlatCatYellowMat · 13/06/2026 19:40

I used to need a nap when I was even more iron deficient than I am now.

Now though, I some times just like one, just knock off from work 30 mins early before I go and do the school run because it's pleasant, and means I don't have to rush to bed quite as early as I normally would.

So I would say if you can't function without it - get that checked out. If you're doing it because it's nice, and fits in with your life, crack on, and it's a beautiful thing to be able to do.

Dinosaurhearmeroar · 13/06/2026 19:45

before kids I would nap every day after work. I have adhd so burn out quickly but a nap is one of life’s greatest free pleasures! She’s weird 😂

ThreeRandomThings · 13/06/2026 19:49

Im 40 and ever since going back to work after my youngest was born, ive napped with her on a Friday (my non working day) and on a weekend. Not sure how im going to adjust when she drops her nap, as im really not ready to drop mine! 😅

gardenflowergirl · 13/06/2026 19:53

I'd ask your doc to check you for diabetes and hypothyroid.

Sunshineclouds11 · 13/06/2026 19:58

When I napped everyday it turned out I had very low iron.
not napped since on tablets

Notabarbie · 13/06/2026 20:00

A siesta? Wonderful idea. This is how people in Asia get so much done.

Mattsmum2 · 13/06/2026 20:10

Im 60 too and luckily retired at the end of December. I always napped when I had free time and only for 10-15 mins, I made sure I checked the clock briefly before nodding off. I nap now if I’ve had to get up early or had a busy day, sometimes I do and sometimes I don’t. Im lucky that I sleep really well at night too, going to sleep about 11 and waking about 7. Allowing your body to reset is so important.

Shadowers · 13/06/2026 20:43

I’m often nap when I’m wfh. I love it. Not at all weird
