I am sooooo angry with my GP?s I could scream ? In fact I think I have done very well not to ??

We?ve been here for about a year now and on 2 occassions have taken DD?s in with either chest or ear infections to be told they were fine, only to go back a week later and be given anti-biotics because they have infact got an infection and clearly weren?t fine ! Following these occasions I have avoided the GP?s like the plague ?..

DD?s have both been snotty, coughing, sneezing and generally coldy for a week now ? they have both been dosed up on Calpol/Calprofen and it?s not improving at all ? They both not have bright green slime (nice !) dripping from their noses constantly and their throats are so sore DD1 is close to tears sometimes, DD2 looks so poorly it?s awful and I can see just by looking in her mouth it?s so red and swollen and I don?t even know what I?m supposed to be looking for ??

Anyway, I?m at work so DH took them to GP?s this morning and was told, they are fine, they?ve got a cough, everyone has ? stop given them calpol/calprofen and try putting them in the bathroom with the hot taps on ? WTF !!!!

I am soooo furious ? I have just rang back and demanded to be seen again this evening.
Am I in the wrong ???? They?ve clearly got an infection or their noses wouldn?t be bright green ? the calpol/calporofen is clearly not clearing up whatever it is they have as it?s been nearly a week now. We are going on holiday on Friday and DH told the GP all of this and just got fobbed off

i thought anibiotics were shit for a cold? in like - the cold is incurable ?

sorry

errrrrrrrrm you doctor is complete shit!

FoghornLeghorn · 23/06/2008 12:13

I'm not disagreeing they have got a cold which yes might be incurable but something in there clearly infected and that's what needs the antibiotics !

You're right Custardo - they are shit !!!
Thanks

Steam can be very good for this sort of illness (sorry).

Antibs will do nothing if it's viral (which is probably is).

noddyholder · 23/06/2008 12:14

Green snot needs anti biotics esp if they have high temps Can you get a look at theri throats?White pussy spots needs anti bs red is just inflammation and will go.Ds had this last week but he is 14 and needed anti b to get rid of it

tortoiseSHELL · 23/06/2008 12:15

If it's a cold then ABs are useless. And overusing them will lead to more AB-resistant bugs.

If it's an infection then yes they do need ABs.

Calpol won't cure a cold or an infection, will simply help them feel better.

Running the hot taps is really good advice actually - I do it all the time with my kids - the steam helps clear the sinuses. Also putting a wet towel on a hot radiator in their rooms, and menthol on tissue under their pillow.

Hope they're better soon.

getbackinyouryurtjimjams · 23/06/2008 12:15

It doesn't always. Viruses can make snot green.

cheesesarnie · 23/06/2008 12:15

i agree-dont think antibiotics do much for a cold.have you tried honey and lemon for throats?

but argh with you.

LilRedWG · 23/06/2008 12:16

If it is a viral infection, anit-biotics will do bugger all. If it turns into a bacterial infection (which it sounds like it did in the past) anti-biotics will then help. Frustrating as hell for you though, we've been through the same with DD.

MsDemeanor · 23/06/2008 12:16

Green snot needs antibiotics? Blimey, my kids would have had hundreds of doses of ABs by now! I thought green snot meant the child's body was fighting the infection, which was generally viral?

getbackinyouryurtjimjams · 23/06/2008 12:16

Look at this from wiki:

"In the case of a viral infection such as cold or flu, the first stage of infection causes the production of a clear, thin mucus in the nose or back of the throat. As the body begins to react to the virus (generally one to three days), mucus thickens and may turn yellow or green. In these cases, antibiotics will not be useful, and are a major source of misuse. Treatment is generally symptom-based; the only cure is to allow the immune system to fight off the virus over time."

FoghornLeghorn · 23/06/2008 12:17

Thanks Noddy - It's the green snot which is why I wanted them seen, I have just left the cold which is what it was all last week but now there is green snot they now need antibiotics.
I know as soon as they have the first dose, the difference in them will be amazing - they respond brilliantly to antib's and it's just so frustrating.

Jimjams - I agree steam in excellent but they aren't congested, it's streaming out of them both

You really don't want unnecessary antibs. They fucked ds1 up royally.

tortoiseSHELL · 23/06/2008 12:17

Does green snot mean you need ABs?

cheesesarnie · 23/06/2008 12:18

antibiotics makes my ds2 have runny bum!for colds we use steam, lemon, lots of water and lots of cuddles.calpol for temp.

noddyholder · 23/06/2008 12:18

My docs said yellow or clear ok but the two bugs that cause infection are blue and yellow and when they mix green snot!Mind you he is quite mad

TigerFeet · 23/06/2008 12:22

Viral infections can cause green snot - or so I understand anyway

I know it's frustrating and it is true that viral infections can leave people open to bacterial infections, but to give AB's at the first sign of infection is not a good idea.

I hope your dc's are feeling better soon, nothing worse than a poorly child.

Twiglett · 23/06/2008 12:23

LOL at noddy's doctor ..is he aged?

it's a bugger when you feel righteously indignant at GPs only to find out actually they're right .. it happens that way some times.

Coughing up green gunk is generally an infection that will respond to anti-bs.. streaming out the nose generally not .. sore throat could be anti-biotic requirement or not

why don't you try the steam? and remember loads of fluids too

FoghornLeghorn · 23/06/2008 12:25

Well you lot are crap !!! I wanted you all to agree with me and let me stamp my feet

It's sooooo frustrating though ..... how much longer do I let it go on for if it doesn't start improving ? Surely after a week I should be noticing some improvement if it's only a cold or viral infection ?

OP posts:
getbackinyouryurtjimjams · 23/06/2008 12:28

Viruses etc can take ages to get over fully, but is generally better for the immune system if you only use antibs as a last resort .

I aways snigger at the descriptions of colds in Jane Austin - the pre-lemsip days.

TigerFeet · 23/06/2008 12:29

Viral infections can go on for a couple of weeks or possibly longer unfortunately. I would take them to the docs if they develop a chesty cough.

It's the pits isn't it? We just want the doc to make them better and sometimes they just can't. Farking useless bar stewards

TigerFeet · 23/06/2008 12:30

Chesty productive cough that is - more green goo I'm afraid!

tortoiseSHELL · 23/06/2008 12:30

Viruses are just really annoying! And they can go on for ages. I hope they are better in time for your holiday!

FoghornLeghorn · 23/06/2008 12:34

Awww I want them to be better for our holiday - it's going to be no fun for them if they are poorly

OP posts:
thebecster · 23/06/2008 12:35

Viruses can be just as nasty as bacterial infections, so saying it's viral doesn't mean people are saying 'it's only a virus'. I had viral meningitis and nearly died of it. Ebola is a virus (don't think your DCs have that ). It's just that if it's a virus giving anti-b's will (a) not improve your DC's recovery (b) will mess up their immune system for the long term and (c) likely give them an upset tummy to add to their worries! Sorry to say that your doctor was right, but he probably was.
As for how long it takes, it depends on the virus. A cold can be one or two weeks, 'flu three to six weeks.

avenanap · 23/06/2008 12:42

Doctors are not useless, a child's illness can change very rapidly, a cough with a clear chest can change into a chest infection in a matter of days. It is the parents responsibility to take the child back if their condition changes or stays the same. You won't always get the treatment that you think is appropriate because the doctor will be listening to your child's chest and listening to the symptoms. A cough can be chesty without an infection. Watch out for loss of appetite, lethargy, headaches and fever.

Look in you child's throat and have a look at the tonsils. If they have white spots on them then take them back to the GP. Are you sure DH told the doctor all of the symptoms (green snot)?
