How common is twitching muscles?

macwoozy · 20/06/2008 20:16

For the last 4 weeks my muscles seem to be having a good old workout. Everyday my muscles are twitching all over the place. Sometimes one muscle can be twitching for a couple of days, but generally it's a couple of twitches here and there every few minutes, it's doing my head in, it's in my arms, legs, hands and even chest.

Of course, as always, I've had a google and frightened myself silly reading about a particularly tragic disease that has twitching as a symptom.

So it would really calm me down a bit if other MN's could say 'oh yeah get them all the time' type thing!!

Lol

I read somewhere that if you had MND you wouldn't even be able to do one hop let alone 35! And you certainly wouldn't be able to tip-toe, nor walk on your heel!!

Finger tests - If you can pick up a heavy book like an encyclopedia with thumb and index finger then you're doing O.K with no weakness. But of course I have to go one step further and test it with every finger

And I'm not even going to tell you about my tongue tests

Yep, I've definitely lost the plot.

Oh go on tell me about the tongue test, I am madder than you

I have a Dr's note to prove it

macwoozy · 30/06/2008 10:56

Well seeing you asked!!

Try touching each tooth with your tongue, if you can no probs. When you poke out your tongue does it point out straight or to the side? Try puffing out your cheeks, now with your finger push on your cheek, do you feel some resistance? If yes, all is well!!

anxiousmax · 30/06/2008 11:01

Thank you Dr macwoozy, I am suitably reassured - well for today at least

macwoozy · 30/06/2008 11:18

My pleasure

Oh my God, how daft did I look doing that!

Oh Macwoozy, trying hard not to lol at the thought of what we all look like sticking our tongues out, holding big books with our fingers, while standing on tiptoe and puffing out our cheeks!

We need our brains washing!

Lets all go and have a nice big glass of wine and a cuddle from someone we love.

That's what anxious people need.

macwoozy · 01/07/2008 12:55

Such clever advice Bobbie, off out later to buy my bottle

anxiousmax · 01/07/2008 21:40

OK OK I must be having another mad moment.

I've just poked my tongue out & it leans slightly to one side at the end...i'm worried again!!!

I passed all the other tests but just not sure if i've got a slightly wonky tongue or something else??

macwoozy · 01/07/2008 21:53

Max, you are seriously as bad as me, and I thought I was unique!

If you really had tongue weakness then you would definitely know by having speech and swallowing difficulties. I think I might have alarmed you a bit with the tests. But I fully understand because I am just like that. In fact I had a 15 minute moment of panic today when I realised I had trouble picking up my heavy medical encyclopedia(yeh yeh I know!!) with thumb and little finger(I swore blind I did it with ease the other day) Of course I bloody had difficulty, how much strength is there in your little pinkie!!

anxiousmax · 01/07/2008 22:01

My tongue is exhausted from repeatedly touching all my teeth. I even got ds1(8) to poke his tongue out to see if it is wonky on the end.
I told him i just wanted to check that he was cleaning his teeth.

So is it meant to hang down or just be a bit wonky if theres a problem.

See I'm worse than you

macwoozy · 01/07/2008 22:22

Lol, I got my ds and dp to poke out their tongues too, I didn't explain why though and they didn't ask Since my investigations I have come to realise that all tongues are different, and ds has a scarily pointed one

OP posts:
anxiousmax · 01/07/2008 22:35

OK, Thanks again, I've just got dh to poke his out (tongue) & its a bit lop sided too, so i'm not worried.

I also confessed why I was asking him to poke out his tongue.

His exact words were switch off that bloody computer & go to bed you nutter!

So thanks again for the reassurance i'm off to rest my tongue.

Tinker · 01/07/2008 22:45

Oh, I get this a lot/all the time in my right leg. Have googled it in the past and even found a clip on You Tube where someone has filmed it in his leg I quite like it and watch it but have secretly worried about whether I should be worried.

Am seeing an osteopath now about a misaligned pelvis and I think it may be connected to that with me . I also notice it more when wear particular shoes ie change the heel height

permatired · 03/07/2008 17:08

Hi macwoozy! Just spotted this thread. The exact same thing happened to me 7 years ago and I was worried sick about MND. Was thoroughly checked by 2 neurologists and they both said not MND and they simply didn't know what it was but nothing to worry about. I was so worried that I couldn't think about anything else and I'm 100% sure that made it loads worse. I still get it for a few weeks at a time now, and clearly can't be anything serious as has been going on so long so I try to ignore it till it passes. I agree that tension, tiredness, hyperventilation (or shallow breathing) and poss mineral deficiency are relevant. As someone who has been through this with bells on, all I can say is that sometimes this just happens for reasons that aren't sinister at all (which is hard to believe as it is scary, especially if you can see it). Try not to worry and definitely no googling!!

claricebean · 09/09/2009 11:08

I know this is an old thread, but just wondered if you are still around, macwoozy, and whether your muscle twitching is still there / was ever diagnosed?

I get this too. Have noticed it over the last couple of months. I too have worried myself stupid. I am also a fellow sufferer of too much googling.

Mine is in my legs and feet, usually lower legs and instep. I am sure it is nothing, but find it reassuring to here that I am not alone!

WorzselMummage · 09/09/2009 11:18

I twitch a lot. it's anxiety in my case i get a load of other symptoms too and have to keep myself on a really tight rein and stay away from google and health forums.

I use www.nomorepanic.co.uk there is an anxiety forum on there which is great.. it is amazing how many people are suffering with the same fears.

claricebean · 09/09/2009 11:28

Thanks worzel, that's an interesting website. I am sure from everything I've read on this thread that it is stress related. Sadly the only thing I'm stressed about IS my health. A vicious cycle me thinks.

WorzselMummage · 09/09/2009 11:39

I am the same. I completly convinced myself I had MS and MND at one point

I worked myself in to a horrible state about it and started having panic attacks and felt hideous most of the time. I banned google, pubmed and tbh this forum ( i only replied to this cos i saw it in active convos )at the beginning of the summer hols and i have been much better. I have had wobbles and start councilling next week but i feel a lot better than i did.

I found nomorepanic and anxietyuk great for bringing me down. You are 100% right though it is a vicious circle and i know it's hard but google will just make it worse.

claricebean · 09/09/2009 16:49

Oh worzsel, sorry you have been in a state too. I have had the same fears. I don't mean to drag you back over to the dark side! I really never thought I'd get this anxious over my health. Then I googled a couple of bizarre symptoms and I've been dragged on this roller coaster ride of symptom spotting and double guessing. Arggghhhhhhhhhh.

WorzselMummage · 09/09/2009 21:32

That's how it started with me too, pins and needles in my hand which was caused by a trapped nerves in my back but sent me snow balling into massive health anxiety over night almost ! Mad really. Dr did give me some anti d's but I didn't take them. She said it was PTSD ( from terrible pregnancy and very prem son) I do feel loads better now, I had a truly horrible few months but since banning symptom googling things have improved dramatically. I think being busy over the hols helped too. I am really avoiding the dark side!

What's your story ? Ms too ?

claricebean · 10/09/2009 11:42

MND. I noticed that I was losing some fine motor skills in my left hand. To be honest I've only ever noticed it when performing a very few distinct tasks, and it has been the same for at least three years. It is in no way debilitating, just a weird feeling that I am a bit cack-handed occasionally.

But one day I got it into my head that it was a bit worse and I mentioned it to my GP when I was there about something else. She said it was probably nothing but referred me to a neurologist, and that was when my googling started.

As soon as I read that MND can begin with fine motor skill loss, I convinced myself that I had it. I have now had an MRI and an EMG which were both fine. They are going to do a more invasive EMG soon which is apparently more accurate, but the neurologist has more or less convinced me that it isn't MND.

But when the muscle twitching began over the summer, it seemed too much of a coincidence and I started doubting the test results so far. Anyway, I am now realising that it is probably all stress related, but will mention it to the consultant when I next see him.

deepbreath · 10/09/2009 13:42

I get this dreaded twitching too! Somewhere is twitching all the time, usually one of my legs. The more horrible twitches made me go to see my G.P. because the front of my neck was tensing, so were the muscles between my ribs. That was pretty painful, and would leave me struggling to breathe. I then developed other problems, had pins and needles, kept losing power to my legs and falling etc.

I ended up seeing a neurologist, and they did some of those physical tests that they do just to make you look silly (stand still with your eyes closed and try not to fall over, walk heel to toe in a straight line etc.) Then they did nerve conduction tests and an MRI scan. I was sure that I had MS, I even joined an MS forum. The neurologist prescribed Baclofen (a muscle relaxant) and although I still twitch, it doesn't bother me as much. I've got to go back to see the neurologist in November, but it seems that I have got a form of arthritis in my neck, and this could be irritating nerves. I'm not sure what they are going to do with me now.

claricebean · 10/09/2009 17:43

Oh deepbreath, that's interesting. I guess it just goes to show that there are so many different reasons and we shouldn't jump to the worst conclusions. That is the worst thing about motherhood for me....every day you are surrounded by everything you have to lose. I am sure that's why I'm so hyper-conscious of my health now.

I hope you get some good news and a definite diagnosis (with treatment) in November. I have just got my appointment for my next nerve test which is on 25th September. Fingers crossed.

Your problem is that you have a magnesium deficiency . Lack of magnesium causes, muscle spasms, eye twitches, facial twitches, back pain, muscle pain, joint pain, bone pain, migraine headaches, vibrating vision even ringing in the ear and heart palpitations because the heart is a muscle , the eyes have muscles in them and the ears have muscles in them. Without magnesium your muscles are in a state of constant contraction. Magneisum makes your muscles relax .You should not take vitamins or minerals alone . I take vitamins and minerals that are made from, whole food. I like the company , Mega Food, they have a good , bone health mineral bottle that has the right amounts of ; Magnesium, Vitamin D3, Calcium , Vitamin K. If you look on many of the multi vitamin and mineral bottles they do not contain those minerals or very small amounts of them. Usually the reason is because they are so big that they will interfere with the absorption of the vitamins and so therefore you should not take them at the same time. I would also take a purified Omega 3 and Omega 6 (GLA) from a company like Carlsons or Life Extension because theirs is purified otherwise you will be ingesting mercury.
