Embarrassing trapped wind and farting !

Sundayagain27 · 08/04/2026 18:03

I am 56 healthy - 5ft 7 and 59 kg I eat what I consider really healthy diet and am plagued by trapped wind pains and excessive gas ! O try to avoid upf and don’t eat meat. As soon as I’ve eaten I need to fart, tmi but they’re noisy but not smelly ! And I can start the day flat stomached and end it with a tight waist band !
I try to avoid the typical bean triggers in the main but sometimes by the end of the day o could weight 3kg more !
I am not regular with my bowels though have worked out an oat based breakfast can get things moving !
typical day 150g fage Greek yogurt, kiwi, berries and homemade granola (2 dessert spoons)
Mid morning oat milk matcha
lunch smoked salmon, 1 hard boiled egg rocket, couple of olives couple of cherry tomatoes
choc rice cake and couple of prunes if constipated
dinner - salmon or prawns usually with pasta or rice or potatoes loads of veg eg tenderstem , asparagus, spinach, salad leaves
occasional beer / wine/ fizzy water
decaf tea / herbal tea
I take a good multi vit, turmeric for joints and magnolia rhodiola for mood and magnesium and a probiotic at night
what can I do to stop this farting and get things moving better and discourage the tight waist band !

To keep things moving 2 kiwi fruit every day (inc skins) has been shown to prevent constipation. Add a tablespoon of chia seeds to your yogurt and also eat 4/5 dates daily and you should have very few problems.

Can’t help you with the wind I’m afraid. I’m veggie so eat loads of lentils. It’s dangerous for me to bend down to open the bottom filing cabinet drawer some days! 😳

However, oat milk ferments in the gut producing gasses which can cause wind and bloating, and some brands add emulsifiers and stabilisers which can also cause gas and bloating. The sweetened versions can also cause issues, so check what yours has in it, or make your own with just oats and water.

zantez · 08/04/2026 19:24

Deflatine and/or peppermint tea for you.

Octavia64 · 08/04/2026 19:27

Well this is usually your bowel reacting to something you have eaten. There’s healthy diet but if your bowel doesn’t like it then it isn’t healthy for you.

start cutting stuff out to work out what it is.

pizzaHeart · 08/04/2026 19:31

Are you taking any medications? They might have this effect.
Also broccoli, however tender stem it is, makes me farting violently.

Savvysix1984 · 08/04/2026 19:42

I’ve started taking fibre husk tablets and they’ve worked really well for bowel habits.

tfu · 08/04/2026 19:47

Charcoal helps but honestly I think it is the oats - I have a similar issue avoided oat milk/oats and it more or less stopped

FeralWoman · 08/04/2026 19:53

@Sundayagain27 You said that you don’t eat meat. That’s not true. You’ve listed salmon and prawns. That’s animal flesh ie meat. White meat and seafood are meat. Do you mean you don’t eat red meat like beef and lamb? As for the farting, try eliminating different foods until you find the cause. Regular bowel movements would help. Try psyllium husks. Do you drink any water? Drink more.

Hmm this is interesting. I have granola and yogurt every day for breakfast and then I have actually stopped having lunch as by the afternoon, my stomach was incredibly growly and quite windy. It still is to a certain extent so perhaps it’s the oats! As weirdly, it doesn’t tend to happen at home but I don’t tend to eat the same breakfast!

I need to test this but I do love granola……

SeaDragon17 · 08/04/2026 19:59

Are you menopausal? I was never particularly windy until the last 6 months or so, about a year into menopause, and there’s been no changes to diet. Same as you, loud but not smelly!

A Google or two and it is a thing. Meno is the gift that keeps giving….

Theolittle · 08/04/2026 20:01

I need loads of fibre and bran flakes used to work for me every morning but I need more as I get older. I’ve started batch cooking lentil dal which is a brilliant source of fibre and protein and gets things moving. Agree though it’s about finding what works for you

If I ate lentils (and I tried them) I'd take off like a sailboat!

I also need lots of fibre so I take weetabix mixed with MILLED (not whole) chia and flax seeds, add protein powder and mix with hot water, yes water. Top with mixed fruit that I chop in the electric chopper in bulk and freeze in portions. Kiwi, tinned prunes, tinned pears and fresh berries.

Works great for me and zero wind, but we are all different and what suits me might not suit others.

Flatinbed · 08/04/2026 20:12

How do you eat kiwi with skins?

IrishSelkie · 08/04/2026 20:31

I have a similar issue. A colonoscopy showed IBS. Mine is the bloated gassy type. I was told to cut back on fibre as fibre as that was causing the extra flatulence. So no more whole meal. Fewer raw veg. I also found out I was intolerant to all animal and nut milks.

Like a horse eating an apple?

sharkstale · 08/04/2026 21:35

Cut out the oat milk matcha and see if that makes a difference. I drink oat milk and I think that's what does it for me

7238SM · 08/04/2026 21:39

Sorry what! How long have you had this change in bowels? What testing have you had for digestive issues such as IBS/Crohn's etc?

Tulipvase · 08/04/2026 21:56

My son eats them like an apple.

Handeyethingyowl · 08/04/2026 22:00

If it were me, the oat milk matcha and/or the broccoli might cause this. I have oat milk latte sometimes but would not have one every day for this reason. I just have a small amount in a filter coffee usually.

If you are not regular I’d try having the prunes every morning with your yoghurt, or switching to Weetabix.

Sundayagain27 · 08/04/2026 22:01

Thanks everyone will try cutting oats though I use the plenish oat milk which is gluten free and just oats water and salt no fillets. Will move to almond milk with no fillers ? I love matcha ! Hard to give my cup a day up, I don’t do coffee !
I make my granola with gluten free oats, nuts tahini, maple syrup, chia seeds and pumpkin seeds will just go nuts on my yogurt. Will up the kiwis
yes def menopause I’m in HRT !
Will cut broccoli
trial and error I guess
now I think about it I think I’m better on a holiday where there’s no snacks and usually no nuts - could they be a problem ?

AllTheChaos · 08/04/2026 22:05

I had to stop having Plenish after they moved to the ‘creamier’ recipe a couple of years ago, as the digestive enzymes they added (which are not on the ingredients list) made me bloated and nauseous. I switched back to Oatly and that helped. I can’t have gluten, and sugar also causes similar issues. I figured it out by cutting things out one at a time for a few weeks and seeing what happened, on the recommendation of my GP. In my case I have specific health issues that cause problems, but apparently these foods are really common triggers for lots of people

keepswimming38 · 08/04/2026 22:14

@FeralWomansalmon and prawns are fish and seafood not ‘white meat’!!

RaininSummer · 08/04/2026 22:41

I was thinking the same. Odd definition of meat.

Besidemyselfwithworry · 08/04/2026 22:44

I had this it started after my second child and the tummy ache and bloating was awful so I went on a gluten free diet (I’m not coeliac but must be intolerant!) and I’m 150% Better for it. I’d trial it for a couple of weeks to see
if there is a difference

Sundayagain27 · 08/04/2026 22:56

@AllTheChaos interesting i thought it was the most natural - it’s a minefield !
what’s best dairy milk alternative ? If I’m stopping oats might need to consider an alternative ? Eggs aren’t great for me
would good sourdough be ok in moderation will need some carb

OP posts:
Sundayagain27 · 08/04/2026 22:57

@keepswimming38 I thought the same I’d say I’m pescatarian and have been for 39 years.
going to cut oat milk and granola and see how it goes
