Embarrassing trapped wind and farting !

Sundayagain27 · 08/04/2026 18:03

I am 56 healthy - 5ft 7 and 59 kg I eat what I consider really healthy diet and am plagued by trapped wind pains and excessive gas ! O try to avoid upf and don’t eat meat. As soon as I’ve eaten I need to fart, tmi but they’re noisy but not smelly ! And I can start the day flat stomached and end it with a tight waist band !
I try to avoid the typical bean triggers in the main but sometimes by the end of the day o could weight 3kg more !
I am not regular with my bowels though have worked out an oat based breakfast can get things moving !
typical day 150g fage Greek yogurt, kiwi, berries and homemade granola (2 dessert spoons)
Mid morning oat milk matcha
lunch smoked salmon, 1 hard boiled egg rocket, couple of olives couple of cherry tomatoes
choc rice cake and couple of prunes if constipated
dinner - salmon or prawns usually with pasta or rice or potatoes loads of veg eg tenderstem , asparagus, spinach, salad leaves
occasional beer / wine/ fizzy water
decaf tea / herbal tea
I take a good multi vit, turmeric for joints and magnolia rhodiola for mood and magnesium and a probiotic at night
what can I do to stop this farting and get things moving better and discourage the tight waist band !

@AllTheChaos interesting i thought it was the most natural - it’s a minefield !
what’s best dairy milk alternative ? If I’m stopping oats might need to consider an alternative ? Eggs aren’t great for me
would good sourdough be ok in moderation will need some carb

Honestly, I don’t know! I have oatly, and gluten-free porridge oats, and it has helped. Quitting gluten stopped the awful wind, and that and no sugar mean I no longer throw up after most meals. The best thing really is to keep a food diet, cut out one thing for a few weeks, and record what happens, then again when you reintroduce it.

AllTheChaos · 08/04/2026 23:03

I keep looking at recipes for bread alternatives, but I’m just not a very good cook and fear they are beyond me!

Was just going to say maybe watch the eggs! For me too much wheat/bread products don't do me any favours. Keeping a food diary (boring I know) might help.

Sundayagain27 · 08/04/2026 23:09

Yep food diary is a good point

Do you have any artificial sweetener? Sugar free gum gives me the worst whizzpops

Sundayagain27 · 08/04/2026 23:12

@EverythingIsComputer not intentionally
I try to avoid but may be a hidden ingredient

@FeralWomansalmon and prawns are fish and seafood not ‘white meat’!!

They’re still meat. Fish is seafood. Seafood is meat. I mentioned white meat to cover chicken, turkey, etc. It’s all meat.

Hmm this is interesting. I have granola and yogurt every day for breakfast and then I have actually stopped having lunch as by the afternoon, my stomach was incredibly growly and quite windy. It still is to a certain extent so perhaps it’s the oats! As weirdly, it doesn’t tend to happen at home but I don’t tend to eat the same breakfast!

I need to test this but I do love granola……

Could you make granola with nuts and seeds and avoid oats? https://nadiashealthykitchen.com/healthy-grain-free-granola-recipe/

Sundayagain27 · 09/04/2026 11:03

@tfu I think nuts might be my problem - I love them especially pistachios and cashews and pecans and they’re quite high fodmap

this morning I had the yogurt and fruit / no nuts or berries - had good bowel movement after but missed the texture
will intro the nuts again tomorrow without oats !!
it’s a guessing game
avoiding oat milk matcha today and may swap to almond milk

Please have a look into Dr Will Bulciewicz—he’s a board-certified gastroenterologist who explains what could be going on with excessive gas and bloating really well. It’s usually constipation that is the trigger, and it’s a vicious cycle. He doesn’t recommend cutting plant foods out unless it’s an official intolerance or allergy. That can often make things worse. In fact diets like FODMAP are only meant to be followed for a short time, if at all. Our guts need a variety of nutrients and fibres to work properly.

If you keep things moving the gas will decrease. I eat a whole foods plant based diet with a bit of fish here and there, and I eat beans too. I’ve found kiwis help as well as loads of water and a bit of psyllium husk if I feel like my bowels are a bit sluggish, as they tend to be sometimes in perimenopause and menopause!

tfu · 09/04/2026 11:44

I’ve recently overhauled my diet - not eliminating anything fully but just focusing on increasing plants and fibre which has helped. I found that fake meat /soya products didn’t agree with me so tend to avoid alongside oats but I can tolerate porridge occasionally

Pollpoll · 09/04/2026 11:50

I take various medications that cause wind, could that be it?
A lot of what you are eating seems to be very high fibre, presumably to keep things moving. I take a drug that causes constipation and tried eating oats, chias, seeds etc for breakfast but not only did they not work as well as my trusty All Bran, they all gave me wind.
I know Allbran is processed but it just really works for me and less gas.

Thanks everyone will try cutting oats though I use the plenish oat milk which is gluten free and just oats water and salt no fillets. Will move to almond milk with no fillers ? I love matcha ! Hard to give my cup a day up, I don’t do coffee !
I make my granola with gluten free oats, nuts tahini, maple syrup, chia seeds and pumpkin seeds will just go nuts on my yogurt. Will up the kiwis
yes def menopause I’m in HRT !
Will cut broccoli
trial and error I guess
now I think about it I think I’m better on a holiday where there’s no snacks and usually no nuts - could they be a problem ?

There is no gluten in oats; they're naturally gluten free.

This is true but if you are coeliac you are wise to buy oats labelled gluten free as ordinary oats can have some cross contamination from factory.

10namechangeslater · 09/04/2026 12:37

Low fodmap OP it really works

Remaker · 09/04/2026 12:39

If this is a new development please go and see your GP. Changes in bowel habits should always be investigated via a stool test or colonoscopy, especially in your 50s. Bloating can also be a sign of ovarian cancer. Most likely it’s just dietary but best to rule out medical causes first.

As a coeliac I’m going to point out that while oats themselves don’t have gluten in, they aren’t considered to be gluten free due to farming and manufacturing methods, hence the need for “gluten free” oats.

OP have you been tested for anything as pp have asked? Coeliac, IBS, IBD etc?

Sundayagain27 · 09/04/2026 16:07

Hi years ago I got tested and wasn’t coeliac or dairy intolerant
I think as I got older I realised dairy in the form of milk or too much cheese or cream left me feeling heavy and a bottle uncomfortable.
i think I follow too much conflicting advice online
were told to eat high protein breakfast so yogurts berries and granola the best I can do there as I don’t particularly enjoy eggs !
lunch I would love a sandwich everyday ideally cheese and pickle ! But I’m left feeling sluggish after that so have moved towards more pickle things and try to include fibre to avoid constipation ! It’s a vicious circle.
i am happy with cream fir breakfast but nog sure what milk to use now and its not that filling ! Love overnight oats but that does make me windy !
weirdly today I was snowed under and had to have a supermarket sandwich and had tubs mayo within minutes my stomach was gurgling even though I chewed well and I think of may be the emulsifiers ij cheap bread ? I usually make lunch to take in but got stuck today
