MOMA food recall - rodent infestation - worried after we ate 6 contaminated boxes

SummerCycling · 28/03/2026 19:37

MOMA announced a week or so ago that a certain list of their products were affected by a rodent infestation. I checked my cupboard and had never bought those items

This evening, Ocado has emailed me multiple times refunding for each order of affected MOMA Raspberry & Apple Overnight Oats Gluten Free 400g I had bought (best before date 24/04/2026-12/03/2027). This has now been added to the list of contaminated food.

My family had ordered 9 boxes, we have 3 remaining. So we have eaten 6 contaminated boxes.

I am incredibly stressed and worried by this.

Is there anyone else affected by this? Looking forward to your replies.

Ocado email (one of many with the various delivery dates):

Our supplier MOMA is recalling Raspberry & Apple Overnight Oats Gluten Free 400g we delivered to you on 21/12/2025 due to potential pest contamination during the manufacture of these batches. If you have any further questions please contact the supplier.

The affected items have a Best before date between 24/04/2026-12/03/2027. Our systems show that you have been sent one or more of these items. Please check if you have any affected items, do not consume and dispose safely.

We will automatically process a full refund on your behalf. Please allow 7-10 working days for this to appear on your statement. For more information, please contact MOMA on [email protected]

On behalf of MOMA we apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Kind Regards,

The Ocado Customer Service Team

Don’t you think the risk is that mice were present during the production process, around the raw ingredients etc rather than just around the end boxed product?

Llamamaman · 30/03/2026 01:13

Everyone chill out. Literally no-one has got the incredibly rare Weils Disease or the other even rarer rodent diseases from MOMA food. Don’t you understand they have to recall. Doesn’t mean you’re all about to drop dead

Most households, or a lot of households do not have mice. Most households will occasionally find a field mouse - singular - that has made its way into the house, trap it and kill it and try to take precautions to make sure it does not happen again. Households that have mice on a regular basis are generally those where hygiene and cleanliness are not priorities. Mice are germs on four feet as they are doubly incontinent and urinate and defecate everywhere. Rats are even worse. @SummerCycling, your immediate worry was understandable but, as others have said, the chances of anything you have eaten being contaminated in this way are miniscule. Companies have to issue a blanket recall on a product once they realise there is a problem because someone will be in the 1,000,000 to one statistic that could be affected. However, you are, by definition, likely to be among the 999,000.

It is incredibly common for households to have mice, you may not even notice them conversely. Its not unusual. Call it 'a lot' or dont call it 'a lot'.

This is the problem with food production nowadays. Hence why I make as much as I can, bread, biscuits, cakes etc. overnight oats are so simple to make from scratch I don’t know why people buy stuff like this.
if you are so freaked out by this perhaps start thinking about ways to reduce the possibility of it happening in future?

Well to be fair, the issues here appear to be that the original food, not the packaged food, may have been exposed to meeces

So at home, I cook everything, but that doesnt mean that all my oats, flours, semonlinas, grains etc havent also had a risk of that too.

Unless you are producing your own flour and oats I am not sure what your point is?

Well done for cooking everything from scratch, not all of us are able to do that unfortunately.

I don't know if this will put your mind at risk but if you look at this rationally, looking at the risks that you identified:

  1. Salmonella - causes rapid onset food poisoning symptoms. If you had caught it you would definitely know.
  2. Hantavirus - caused by inhalation of dried rodent urine so its unlikely you would have caught it. The strain in the UK is mild and often asymptomatic. Incubation is 2-4 weeks so you would likely have had it by now if it was a risk.
  3. Rat-bite fever - only 1-2 cases per year in the UK, probably caught abroad. Incubation is a week so you would likely have had it by now.
  4. LCMV - as with hantavirus caused by inhalation of dried rodent urine and droppings. Usually asymptomatic but can cause damage to unborn children, so if you are not pregnant probably not an issue. Incubation is 1-2 weeks.

All in all, it is vanishingly unlikely that you or your family will have contracted a serious illness. People live with rodents all the time as they are everywhere and the vast majority never catch anything from them.

Even if you buy flour or oats there is a high chance that whatever field/barn/warehouse they came from had mice around. I hate mice and am scared of them so don’t like the idea of them around food but from knowing people who work in all areas of the food production cycle they really are pretty much everywhere - luckily we just don’t know it.

Yes that's what I imagined the situation would be, so not that the packaging would show evidence of anything. If the packaging showed anything suspicious we'd all have noticed I think. Far more likely they are concerned about the ingredients before being packaged.

I am not imagining dropping dead from this; however there are serious potential risks from eating food contaminated by mice - that's why they are withdrawing the products.

I am surprised you say "overnight oats are so simple to make from scratch I don’t know why people buy stuff like this."

Moma Raspberry and Apple overnight oats are very healthy and truly delicious. Here's the list of ingredients:

Wholegrain Oats (72%), Raisins, Dried Apple (6%), Sunflower Seeds, Pumpkin Seeds, Coconut Chips, Desiccated Coconut, Freeze Dried Raspberries (1%), Freeze Dried Blackcurrants

So while overnight oats are simple to make, it wouldn't be as simple to make them with all these lovely additional ingredients.

I do add chia seeds, some other seeds, kefir and milk etc the night before then some nuts and fresh fruit in the morning. But using Moma's raspberry and apple as the basis makes it so much tastier than just with oats.

How can I reduce the possibility of this happening in future? Advice would be very welcome. Thanks

I have peripheral neuropathy in my hands and feet following loads of chemotherapy, so i can't peel / slice for example, but I can certainly change what I buy and have most major supermarkets relatively nearby eg Waitrose, Sainsbury's, Aldi, Lidl, etc plus Ocado

Thanks!

I had the recall and took the boxes back to Tesco. They didn’t have a clue what I was talking about and I had to show them the email.

That's not very efficient of Tesco. I knew because Ocado emailed me with the refund for each pack I'd bought. I hope Tesco are usually better informed.

Making food from scratch won't make any difference. You still have to buy oats, flour, etc. Unless you want to become a farmer - which would expose you to a lot more mice!

stomachamelon · 05/04/2026 19:24

@SummerCycling they were fine when I showed them the email but I took it by their reaction they hadn’t had a surge of people bringing MOMA things back :)
