MOMA food recall - rodent infestation - worried after we ate 6 contaminated boxes

SummerCycling · 28/03/2026 19:37

MOMA announced a week or so ago that a certain list of their products were affected by a rodent infestation. I checked my cupboard and had never bought those items

This evening, Ocado has emailed me multiple times refunding for each order of affected MOMA Raspberry & Apple Overnight Oats Gluten Free 400g I had bought (best before date 24/04/2026-12/03/2027). This has now been added to the list of contaminated food.

My family had ordered 9 boxes, we have 3 remaining. So we have eaten 6 contaminated boxes.

I am incredibly stressed and worried by this.

Is there anyone else affected by this? Looking forward to your replies.

Ocado email (one of many with the various delivery dates):

Our supplier MOMA is recalling Raspberry & Apple Overnight Oats Gluten Free 400g we delivered to you on 21/12/2025 due to potential pest contamination during the manufacture of these batches. If you have any further questions please contact the supplier.

The affected items have a Best before date between 24/04/2026-12/03/2027. Our systems show that you have been sent one or more of these items. Please check if you have any affected items, do not consume and dispose safely.

We will automatically process a full refund on your behalf. Please allow 7-10 working days for this to appear on your statement. For more information, please contact MOMA on [email protected]

On behalf of MOMA we apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Kind Regards,

The Ocado Customer Service Team

I’m pissed off that last week I had a notice about one product then today a new email about more products. Why the delay?

Zanatdy · 29/03/2026 05:49

Surely you’d be unwell straight away if you’d caught a disease from mice. You need to try and put it out of your head, if you’re well, then you’re fine.

SummerCycling · 29/03/2026 15:32

VividDeer · 28/03/2026 20:34

I cant imagine giving this much thought to be honest.

Thanks @VividDeer I think I got a bit too worried.

Potential risk.......potential! Chill out. They have to be super careful. If the boxes of oats you ate had rat piss all over them you would probably know about it.

Hi @Owly11 Yes rat piss I agree, it would have stank! I think it's more likely to have been mouse droppings or something from mice. Or hopefully, nothing at all. I am more chilled out today.

Wouldn't you notice if the packaging had been nibbled? Like many people we've had mice in our kitchen (if it is mice) and they make a heck of a mess.

This is why I find it concerning that the 'infestation' was last autumn yet it's only been announced now at the end of March.

It seems to be the third party manufacturer at fault.

Mice in the house is an infestation, thats what its called because they're everywhere.

I didn't know that, I thought using the word 'infestation' meant there were absolutely loads of them as opposed to just one or two. But they breed quickly and very often don't they.

Mice are cute when they're nowhere near anything that can harm us.

I'm in the same situation as you. Had multiple deliveries of Moma porridge from Ocado since November last year up to this month. And they've all been listed as from the recalled batches... but we've already eaten them all!

We're all still standing with no illness at all - so I'm not going to worry about it. Quite frankly we're probably more at risk from the cats walking across the kitchen countertops with their stinky paws!

I would say don't fret anymore. They have to be this drastic and recall everything when something is reported. It could even be they don't have conclusive evidence but if they suspect they have to act.

Thanks @RunningUpTheHill for your post, it certainly makes sense and puts this into perspective.

These are extremely rare illnesses - usually caught only by people who work or are around a lot of mice infestations. You are not going to get Hantavirus. It doesn’t even survive very long in their poo.

Don’t you think if there was a genuine risk that members of the public were going to get potential fatal diseases because of a breakfast cereal that this would be all over the news….

SummerCycling · 29/03/2026 15:42

daisychain01 · 28/03/2026 21:30

The wording is "potential pest contamination"

they may have detected a mouse or a vole, it doesn't necessarily mean the mouse or mice have actually done anything.

I noticed in Waitrose they have withdrawn all the boxes and containers off the shelves.

I've been eating a sachet a day for breakfast for 18 months and honestly I haven't had any ill effects.

i know this sort of thing can be anxiety inducing but I wouldn't be put off their product, it can happen to any food manufacturer and not get detected. Because they found out they had to declare it.

Hi @daisychain01 They did use the word 'infestation' so I doubt it was a single mouse (they also specified mouse, not vole). But you're right, it was the third party manufacturer - MOMA declared it as soon as they were informed.

Manufacturers need to be more aware and react immediately by the sounds of it.

I completely understand that you are alarmed, but please try to dial it down.
Unless you are at risk, because you’re pregnant or undergoing treatment for a vulnerable condition, you will be fine, and if those conditions apply talk to your GP, or 111, or your health team.

Thanks for your reply. I'm less worried today.

I have eaten 6 contaminated boxes full

No you have potentially eaten some contaminated food, highly unlikely but there is a potential risk hence everything has to be recalled. You do realise there may be absolutely nothing wrong with the food you ate, chances are it was all perfectly fine.

Yes, thanks @BaronessEllarawrosaurus

I just get more anxious these days after going through such horrendous cancer treatments. I worry that because they didn't know what caused my cancer anything toxic is potentially going to cause more issues.

@SkaterGrrrrl Good to hear you don't think you ate anything that was contaminated.

I'd also like to know about apple and cinnamon porridge. Cinnamon is easy to add but apples aren't. Lovely combination.

Mice on the floor or under the cupboards is one thing (still horrible inside a home) but an 'infestation' is on another level plus where there is food.

I'm assuming you've never worked in hospitality or catering? it sounds like you'd be in for a big shock if you did, and I doubt you'd ever eat out again!

SummerCycling · 29/03/2026 15:49

NeverDropYourMooncup · 29/03/2026 00:31

It was a third party supplier. So they just as likely supply the other brands you'd be switching to.

In any case, it's been discovered, investigated, confirmed and then a full recall. The 'I'll never buy them again' response is what encourages companies to cover up contamination events.

You are right, I apologise for saying that.

They have replied to my email with a response they are presumably sending out to anyone who contacts them. It explains what happened:

MOMA'S EMAIL YESTERDAY:

Thank you for your email.

We at MOMA Foods would like to assure you that we are treating this matter seriously.

We were first alerted to a potential issue on 18 March 2026. We immediately launched an investigation and contacted the third-party manufacturer. On 20 March 2026, the manufacturer confirmed that there was evidence that mice had been present in their facility between 1 September and 10 November 2025. Prior to the investigation, MOMA was unaware that a contamination event had occurred in Autumn 2025

As a result, we decided to launch a recall and ask that you do not consume any MOMA porridge or cereal product that you have purchased. We initiated the recall of specific batches as a precaution and have recalled all MOMA Porridge and Cereal products as an additional precaution.

We would emphasise that the likelihood of contamination is low. The recall has been initiated as a precautionary step to ensure the safety of our customers, which is our priority.

We understand how concerning this news must be and our utmost priority is the health and safety of our consumers. We want to ensure that the information we provide to customers is accurate. Our investigations are ongoing and until these have concluded we are not in able to comment further. Please be assured that we are working closely with the Food Standards Agency (FSA) and our Environmental Health Officer (EHO) to ensure that all appropriate safety and health measures are being taken. Regardless, you are advised that if you have concerns about your health you should contact your GP or NHS111

Kind regards

Yes exactly @LycheeFizz1972 This is what I was frustrated about yesterday. I checked that first list and after that ate more of the pack I had because it wasn't on the first list.

It took a very long time between the infestation occurring and the publication of which products were potentially affected - over 4 months!

It sounds as though the manufacturer is at fault. We don't know who that is though. Or whether more brands and products are affected. It does make me think these sorts of events are regularly covered up by manufacturers.

@Zanatdy I don't know if that's 100% the case. Some diseases present later on don't they. I think a stomach upset or diarrhoea would be very soon, but other diseases could maybe start much later.

We are constantly exposed to risks, I do know that. But as I said before, having had cancer with truly awful treatments, and living with the fear of stage IV, I am more quickly anxious about toxins etc etc than I was before. I am calmer today about this particular thing with these porridge products.

Scary... is it the case that there are often rodents around food? Can we vaguely trust those hygiene ratings for example?

Apple are very easy to add! You grate them in before you cook it. I make my own from scratch, takes about 2 minutes:

Oats, 1/2 grated apple, milk. Sometimes chopped apricots, in a bowl. Put in microwave for 2 mins, add maple syrup, eat.

I've been to the GP about it. Didn't seem concerned - 'I've got mice in my kitchen' she said.

Having known some doctors, this does not surprise me.

Most households, or a lot of households have mice. Its not particularly unusual

Yes there are diseases they can carry and transmit but its not likely, possible but not likely becuase presumably your boxes were unopened, un nibbled, un tampered with?

Most households, or a lot of households do not have mice. Most households will occasionally find a field mouse - singular - that has made its way into the house, trap it and kill it and try to take precautions to make sure it does not happen again. Households that have mice on a regular basis are generally those where hygiene and cleanliness are not priorities. Mice are germs on four feet as they are doubly incontinent and urinate and defecate everywhere. Rats are even worse. @SummerCycling, your immediate worry was understandable but, as others have said, the chances of anything you have eaten being contaminated in this way are miniscule. Companies have to issue a blanket recall on a product once they realise there is a problem because someone will be in the 1,000,000 to one statistic that could be affected. However, you are, by definition, likely to be among the 999,000.

Are MOMA saying that “all” their products should not be consumed????

Some items were in the initial recall list last week, then more this week. I have lots of other products - is everyone binning everything from MOMA?

LycheeFizz1972 · 29/03/2026 22:57

I’ve just seen on MOMA website that they are now recalling everything with BBE 24.4.26-12.3.27

DrowningNotWaveing · 29/03/2026 23:17

Check the boxes for signs of mice or rats. If there are none don't worry
