Tinnitus - what sounds do you have? And how many?

I know I've been posting too much about tinnitus, but there hasn't been a thread like this recently, and it helps to know I'm not alone with my cacophony!

Mine:

Both ears - high pitched static (louder in the right ear)
Right ear - EEEEEE
Left ear - a deep 200hz hum/droning which also causes vibrations and echos/reverberations whenever I hear low frequency noise. It's truly horrible.

To add to mine...I have a lot of sensitivity to low frequency sound. So when I'm in a place that has central air conditioning or a furnace, or even some trucks pass by, my hum turns into a rapid hm..hmm.hm.hm.hm which goes back to hmmmmmmmm as soon as the noise stops. It is hellishly annoying.

Hmmm, that sounds weirdly familiar. When I had the SSHL a few days ago, I not only had a significant loss of hearing in that ear, I also had a loud (and very irritating) rattle that came on with particular low frequencies.

I first noticed it when cars drove past me whilst walking down the street. When at the hospital I walked down a very long corridor and found that the rattle would come and go, and I figured it must be due to an air conditioning system (which I couldn't actually hear as such). I even walked up and down the same corridor several times to confirm to myself that it was happening at the same places.

I went for a walk yesterday and was very relieved to find that the sound of cars was back to normal.

Have you actually seen a doctor about yours? If not, I'd strongly recommend doing so.

Yes I have. Mine started after an infection last year, and I did lose some hearing too. Its likely the tinnitus and auditory 'oddities' as he called them are permanent, annoyingly.

Has anyone found any kind of ear plugs helpful? Either all the time so the ear nerves aren’t as overstimulated or when the tinnitus is annoying as a kind of ear comfort blanket?! I know, nutty thought! I suppose I’m thinking about how compression socks can be helpful for twitchy nerves.

Also, am I right in thinking that it’s a bit self fulfilling? That it’s exacerbated by our noticing it?

I am coming at this from a fibromyalgia perspective. My whole body gets overly excited about everything- itchy, twitchy, creepy crawly… and the best way to manage it is to not notice it. It’s the equivalent of talking about headline and everyone starting to itch.

I’m torn between doing something about it and steadfastly ignoring it.

Nosejobnelly · 01/03/2026 21:57

Mine is not too high pitched but it does occasionally change. I’ve had it at least 13 years (mid-50s) also mild hearing loss. Used to have but in just one ear, now both, DH has it too and I think his bothers him more than mine bothers me.
i also order some type of sound unless I’m having a day where sound is distorted too.

Mine is all over my head constantly and deafening. It is like a high pitched hissing but also, and much worse, is a droning/humming which is even louder. I hear it over everything and it would be four years in June it began after having microsuction which left me nearly deaf in my left ear. I'm bed bound because of it and not been out properly since it started.

I get a mixture of the high pitched EEEEE and then sometimes it’s just like white noise. If I jab at the outside of my ear for a few seconds it goes away so I’m wondering if it’s ear wax causing it
