Tinnitus - what sounds do you have? And how many?

I know I've been posting too much about tinnitus, but there hasn't been a thread like this recently, and it helps to know I'm not alone with my cacophony!

Mine:

Both ears - high pitched static (louder in the right ear)
Right ear - EEEEEE
Left ear - a deep 200hz hum/droning which also causes vibrations and echos/reverberations whenever I hear low frequency noise. It's truly horrible.

Another one with the constant EEEEEEEE sound. I can block it out most of the time but it's always there.

One of my three genie wishes would be to be able to turn it off and experience silence (without going deaf obvs).

whoTFismadelaine · 26/02/2026 16:44

High pitched ringing in both but worse in right. It usually reminds me I haven't take my proprananol, particularly now they are out of the 80mg slow release and I am trying to remember to take the 20s or 40s to make up through the day!

A high pitched static noise in both ears. It sometimes, very occasionally stops for a brief second and I hope I’m cured. But then it starts again. Pitches can change a bit, moving my jaw seems to change it temporarily too.

Same. Worse in right ear. Sometimes one ear does the usual 'alarm bell' static and the other dis-harmonises with a steady, high whine or whistle. Had it since June 1999 with only the rare, very brief respite.

The variety of fake noises has been gradually increasing. Last night I heard a sharp explosion in the kitchen. Naturally assumed an appliance had shorted out - no, thank goodness - or the out-of-date chicken in the bin had burst its bag - no, and that could've been even worse! I've only just realised it may have been my nervous system's latest auditory joke. I often hear non-existent voices or music which, on examination, are not actually saying words or following a tune.

Fun 🤨

MsWilmottsGhost · 26/02/2026 17:01

Currently a metal bell jangling in my right ear, like an old fashioned fire alarm, and higher pitched EeEeEeEe in my left, like a modern fire alarm. Left is louder today but not always.

Sometimes I get hit by a different WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEE sound that is so loud and comes out of nowhere that it startles me and it's almost painful. It usually moves from one side to the other like a train going past, which is how I know it's in my brain and not my ear.

Mine started after a 1980s rock festival 🤘 It gets much worse when my neurological condition flares up.

StripedPillowcase · 26/02/2026 18:19

EEEEEEE, the same in both ears, started when I had labyrinthitis in about 2005. It gets louder and quieter, but never goes away, and if I'm tired, stressed or dehydrated or have been in a loud environment, it's louder.

Flannelfeet · 26/02/2026 18:24

Constant tumble dryer whooshing in both ears all the time, I hate it, wish it would just fuck off. Loud noises or shouting makes it even louder in my ears and ringing comes along with it. Wish I could chop my ears off. 😔

Nincompoo · 26/02/2026 18:31

Fuuuuuuuzzzzzzzzzzz in both ears, constantly. I can tune it out pretty effectively.

Noise reactive clattering in my right ear if I’m really stressed which sounds like plates being bashed together. The doctor called it myoclonus and which is apparently involuntary muscle spasms

had it since I was a child and I am now in my 40s. Background static buzz sort of sound , I can not explain it any other way but occasionally one ear will buzz loud and ease off and its strange and I do not know why.

I think mine started when I was having to live in a very moldy bedroom as a child.

Cherrycola4 · 26/02/2026 19:20

I also have the EEEEEEEEE but wonder if I’ve always had it as it doesn’t bother me at all. Definitely remember having it as a child.

Walkacrossthesand · 26/02/2026 16:30

@mjf981My lowest’hum’ is around 250Hz and doesn’t vibrate at all - interestingly, below the 250Hz mark my hearing is almost normal, which may be related!

How do you measure it? I've tried using a tone generator and find my 'hum' cancels out when I play a 200hz sound save (and about 50hz either side of this too) - so thats how I put it at 200hz. Is that how you measured it?

Mine does this when I hear low running trucks or planes flying over. They've just started building an apartment block across the road from me this week and are doing the groundworks for it. My ear feels like it's going to explode.

Thats horrible. Mold can cause so many problems. I'm not surprised tinnitus/hearing damage is included.

Mine is a high pitched whistling during the day but when I try to go to sleep with my noise cancelling earplugs in I get a buzzing sound in my left ear in the rhythm of my heartbeat. I've had tinnitus ever since I was diagnosed with critically low B12 deficiency & even with the injections it hasn't improved.

Londog · 27/02/2026 04:01

Mine is a constant ‘sssssss’ sound - just like the sound of putting a conch shell up to your ear on the beach, to listen to the ‘sea’ .
In one ear only, thankfully, as the eardrum has a chronic perforation from an old infection.

HoppityBun · 27/02/2026 04:48

I’d love to know what Hz mine is. It’s a steady whizz, not low and not all the time. Only in my left ear. When it’s on, like now!, it’s very loud and distracting. I’ve no idea what sets it off, but as far as I can work out, it’s not connected with being tired or not.

Use this to check. Just don't play it loud or in your ear or for very long. My low tone is totally cancelled out when I play 200hz.

@mjf981I’m musical, and can ‘pitch’ the notes of the tinnitus - 250Hz is around middle C on a piano, and none of my buzzes are lower than that. It’s also the lowest tone on the standard audiogram.

Anyone who has 'Tinnitus'
Should talk to a doctor and push for a head scan

Lilacblu · 27/02/2026 17:59

Permanent hissing in left ear for years.. but I can tune out and only really bothered about it now as I'm giving it attention!! It wasn't always there and I don't know why it started.. luckily I can tune out mostly I suppose!! now I've just realised that it's a bit like my beastly mother in law as she was always hissing at me for basically doing everything wrong...! God.. don't tell me she's back! 🙄🙏😔😇💕

Lilacblu · 27/02/2026 18:03

Message to mother in law.. SORRY... Hope you're R. I. P... I really do... mean. that... honestly.

Thankfully I rarely get headaches, only when it's really loud and I'm stressed by it.

I've had tinnitus for 15 years, but since I had meningitis 6 years ago, the "eee" became a rainforest ! Running water, wind in trees, twittering birds and, when im extremely stressed or tired, the sound of Howler Monkeys. MRIs and CT scans have ruled out anything sinister, it's a distressing long term consequence of the meningitis.
