dd, 2.5, kept falling over today. she's never been unsteady on her feet in her life but tripped and went flying five or so times. Any ideas?

growth spurt?

it was so weird. no new shoes, no foot growth so far as i can see, nothing unusual except that she kept on tripping flat out and bashing her face and hands on the ground...

Slapped cheek - my DD just had it. Makes legs ache etc?

4andnotout · 15/06/2008 22:56

Has she had her eyes checked?

used2bthin · 15/06/2008 22:58

Can't really help but my DD was like this today, it was constant falls and walking into things all day. She was tired though I think.

AitchTwoCiao · 15/06/2008 22:58

oh GOD oh GOD do you think she might have inherited my crappy sight? oh NO!

Shoes too small?

whomovedmychocolate · 15/06/2008 23:00

Place two flat fingers just in front of her ears pointing upwards. If she yells or it's hot, she's probably got an ear infection - other symptoms are obvious, wax, complaining, tugging ears, not responding to noise.

Otherwise could be dehydration - that causes disorientation; headache (if it's just one day I'd put it down to a headache). So long as she's actually putting her hands out, you can pretty much rule out the worst causes of falls (blackouts etc).

My DD is constantly falling over. She's just got to the height where she can see stuff and concentrates more on that than the table she's about to run into or the stair she is about to leap off!

sss

Doodle2U · 15/06/2008 23:00

Aitch, she might well have crappy eye sight but now-a-days there is a whole host of options for her. Glasses are much nicer, contacts for when she's older and laser eye treatment if she wants it later on.

Any other signs of illness? Off food? Whinging?

charliecat · 15/06/2008 23:02

ear infection

AitchTwoCiao · 15/06/2008 23:02

i'd checked her shoes, they seemed really fine. maybe she was tired..?

whomoved, dd's always been preternaturally steady on her feet, that's why it was so weird today. she was at least putting her hands out, thank goodness. i just felt so sorry for her...

My DD (2.4) was like this a few days ago, just kept tripping over bits of dust/thin air and was generally being a bit whiney. Now she has a fever and (ick) the runs so I have put it down to coming down with something.

Keep the Calpol handy!

AitchTwoCiao · 15/06/2008 23:03

she's not complaining about her ears at all btw. i get really bad ear infections, i've been hospitalised over them, i hope it's not that. i am Rather Disappointed that i haven't got fifteen answers saying 'growth spurt' here...

OP posts:
whomovedmychocolate · 15/06/2008 23:05

Well it could be a growth spurt. But it's much more likely she's just having a bad day. As indeed are you watching her.

Interestingly a tendency towards ear infections can be inherited - I had terrible ones as a child but am madly nursing DD in the hope that she won't get them.

AitchTwoCiao · 15/06/2008 23:07

okay, so i have in order of pref...

  1. incipient squits
  2. ear inf
  3. incipient speckiness
  4. brain tumour w. accomp. blackouts

seriously, noone offering me a wee growth spurt? that's what i generally ascribe any unusual behaviour to... thanks all, i will deffo keep an eye out for all above, thanks for replying.

AitchTwoCiao · 15/06/2008 23:10

i have impossibly slim ear canals... that's why my ear infs get so bad so quickly, i think. i do hope dd hasn't inherited them. my impossibly slim ankles, otoh, she would do well to have, but i fear her paternal grandmother's cankles will be her blighted inheritance.

Hang on a second. I've been thinking....falling over.....it is definitely a growth spurt.

Have you checked the wine cupboard recently

AitchTwoCiao · 15/06/2008 23:12

oh THANK GOD!

(i promise i'll take the ear inf thing seriously, KM, with my history i couldn't not. thanks for the replies, much appreciated).

whomovedmychocolate · 15/06/2008 23:17

You are thanking god because:

(1) You've found the wine cupboard and your DD has left some for you
(2) You have very thin ear canals so can stick your fingers down them effectively deadening all sound and singing lalalallala when we disagree with you?
(3) Your daughter has actually turned into the human equivalent of Clifford the Big Red Dog and you've only just realised?

AitchTwoCiao · 15/06/2008 23:18

yes to all of the above. what of it, fatty?

OP posts:
whomovedmychocolate · 15/06/2008 23:21

I may be fat, but in seven weeks I'll have a baby and be all skinny again and I'll have a manshed

(Everyone else will be thinking we are having a girlie spat you know!)
