No Burp Syndrome - Any experiences

Hi everyone - happy for this thread to move if it is in the wrong place.

My 13 year old daughter has never been able to burp. she makes gargling and frog noises after meals and snacks and get pain in her throat. she also get the most aggressive hiccups which last hours and usually end up in vomitting. come to think of it i have never heard my 16 year old son burp either and he also makes gurgling noises - but he has never complained of neck pain or had painful hiccups.

I am at the stage now where i have requested to see the doctor. i am almost convinced that this is what it is. it has gone on for years but (if i am honest) i just thought it was something she might grow out of .. or a quirk of who she was.

Has anyone ever been diagnosed with this (technical name Retrograde Cricopharyngeal Dysfunction) and what treatment options are there in the UK that people know of? i know its pretty obscure and i've used 'the google' but i'd prefer to hear from folk who have lived this and used a service.

thanks in advance. just trying to arm up before the telphone consult.

thanks

I have this. It's mildly unpleasant and there's a lot more farting! But it's not really disabling in any way. I haven't had treatment but I believe it can be treated with botox.

TammySue · 04/02/2026 15:15

I didn’t know this was a recognised thing!
I don’t burp, maybe I’ll inadvertently do one tiny burp a year and it takes me surprise.
I’ve been known to get my husband to burp me like a baby (circular rubbing on the back) till I can make some froggy throat noises to get relief when it’s particularly uncomfortable 🙈

TammySue · 04/02/2026 15:18

and yes, when I get hiccups it can be torturous.
Dont get them every day, but maybe once or twice a month(?) I’ll have a particularly bad day when it’s just constant on and off hiccups.
I don’t have foolproof methods but I’ve found I can sometimes get rid of them so I don’t feel too sick / get to the point of vomiting, but then they’ll be back in an hour or so.

TallulahBetty · 04/02/2026 15:18

WTF, I didn't know this was an actual thing! I have burped my 3 times in my whole life!

AnonKat · 04/02/2026 15:21

I dont burp, although did twice when I was pregnant. I get frog noises and a noisy throat. It is what it is. Cant say it impacts me negatively in anyway.

DollyTots · 04/02/2026 15:42

Yeah non-burper here too 👋 couldn’t burp if I tried.

It was only ever an issue in my late teens to early twenties when I’d get really painful bouts of hiccups that went on for hours and I’d end up in a state. Then they just stopped.

Me too, there's never a time when i feel the need to

CheeseSandwichU · 04/02/2026 16:42

thank you everyone for the responses so far - yes can you believe its a real thing. She has complained for a few years about it but in the last year in particular the pain has been terrible for her and i - stupidly- thought she was just being dramatic. shes always telling me shes nauseous and i thought it was her way of trying not to go to school/tidy her room/ do anything she didnt want to. until her 13th birthday when she literally hiccupped for 5 hours straight, crazy noises from her chest and throat and then was sick. nothing brings her relief. i realised then i was a fool and i should have listened.

to hear that she's not alone has given me some relief so thank you so much.

i have read about the botox, seems like a simple enough procedure for what could be a huge quality of life improvement.

Are you burpers guzzling food or something, Why do you feel the need to burp?

RazedBeds · 04/02/2026 16:44

My mother has this. She is 85 and in good health for her age, so I don't think it can be serious. She's never had treatment but isn't a fan of fizzy drinks!

yes this is very similar to her. she can be having a laugh with us or friends and the hiccups start and shes ok for a little while but then it must be crazy pressure building up in her throat and chest - she said it feels like (the area where an adams apple would be) goes really achy and like theres pressure and she tries to relieve it by rubbing it. i've been giving her gaviscon thinking its reflux. i will report back what the docs say when they get in touch

I am a fellow non burper.
Was awful in my teen years nauseous and being sick too. I got diagnosed with cyclical vomiting syndrome but I wonder if it was more to do with the inability to burp🤔 they never really investigated I think they were mostly just relieved I wasn't pregnant 😴 despite me quite clearly saying it wasn't that and couldn't be.

It's something I have grown out of so much much better these days.

oh my goodness - i had cyclical vomitting syndrome as a child. i was the 35th confirmed case in the uk and was hospitalised almost every month with odansatron by drip to stop the vomitting. my doc thought i had stomach migraines, then suggested i was lying and was in fact bulimic before diagnosing CVS. grew out of it by age 16 - no problems since.

i didn't even think to put two and two together and think that it might have been related to this no burp thing because i've always been able to burp. i'm actually stunned to 'meet' someone with the same uncommon condition. there may be a link..

Just marking place as my dd can’t burp. She was in awful pain because of it as a baby I think. No wind ever came up and it was years later she told me she’s never burped. She drinks fizzy drinks regularly. Really strange.

i will keep you posted with regards to what the docs say. poor thing. clearly not as uncommon as first thought

PiggyPlumPie · 04/02/2026 17:50

This was me until I had my first baby and I swear something loosened up. Now I burp like a navvy!

TammySue · 04/02/2026 20:01

😳
back from earlier as a non-burpee, just reading the rest of the posts.
I never had a diagnosis of cyclical vomiting as a teenager but I was sooo sicky. I’m surprised my mum never made me take a pregnancy test, I’d have bouts where I’d be sick most mornings for a few weeks.

billandtedsexcellentadventure · 04/02/2026 20:05

I can’t burp. The only time is if im
about to be sick! But I do fart an awful lot. Never had the feel or need to burp?!

Lathemistress · 04/02/2026 20:15

Im a non burper too and occasionally have very painful hiccups. Its never been enough of a problem to seek medical advice but I avoid fizzy drinks or I feel like my stomach is going to pop.

Gettoachiro · 04/02/2026 20:19

Yet another non burper here! I've never burped and wonder if I even did when I was a baby.

Absolutely no problems though but I have heard of the Botox treatment. (No burp on Reddit). Be prepared for the doctor to poo poo it though and know absolutely nothing from various accounts I have read.

Realisation14 · 04/02/2026 22:10

I don't burp either, I do get the chest/throat gurgles if my wind is up high but eventually it shifts downwards at some point and can be farted out! Always felt nauseous as a child and frequently as an adult too, I have acid reflux now and ibs-C.

pinkpony88 · 04/02/2026 22:22

Oh gosh I think this is me!!! I had no idea it was a thing! It doesn’t affect me badly enough to need treatment but the symptoms are the same!
