Hi everyone - happy for this thread to move if it is in the wrong place.

My 13 year old daughter has never been able to burp. she makes gargling and frog noises after meals and snacks and get pain in her throat. she also get the most aggressive hiccups which last hours and usually end up in vomitting. come to think of it i have never heard my 16 year old son burp either and he also makes gurgling noises - but he has never complained of neck pain or had painful hiccups.

I am at the stage now where i have requested to see the doctor. i am almost convinced that this is what it is. it has gone on for years but (if i am honest) i just thought it was something she might grow out of .. or a quirk of who she was.

Has anyone ever been diagnosed with this (technical name Retrograde Cricopharyngeal Dysfunction) and what treatment options are there in the UK that people know of? i know its pretty obscure and i've used 'the google' but i'd prefer to hear from folk who have lived this and used a service.

thanks in advance. just trying to arm up before the telphone consult.

thanks

Yeah I have this, I'm 41 and have burped probably 3 times in my life , I get the frog noises, was much worse when I was late teens , early twenties. If I drank alcohol it got bad, or fizzy drinks. I don't drink anyway, but I can drink the odd fizzy drink now.
Sometimes I have to take gaviscon , but I suffer with acid reflux aswell. Also if I lay on my left side in bed it helps release anything.

Yes, I almost certainly have this. It causes quite a lot of discomfort but seems almost impossible to get anything useful via the NHS. Antacids have helped me a bit.

My DS has this.

out of interest does anyone else with this eat really slowly? He is the slowest eater ever and I’m wondering if it’s related

CheeseSandwichU · 05/02/2026 12:18

thanks for the replies everyone. ti find it reassuring that it is not as uncommon as i thoughts, and also sad that so many suffer with something which really is quite unpleasant.
ive not heard from the doctors - they have a few days to get back to the e-consult. i will let everyone know. i really will do anything to make her more comfortable.

she tries eating slowly but says she still ends up feeling sick - her portions are small but she is a snacker. i am not worried about her weight. she does drink fizzy drinks occasionally and she is becomimg more and more put off by them

I have this, didn't realise it was a 'thing' and certainly never tried to treat it! I get hiccups instead of burping and make frog noises when I try and burp.

My daughter has this! (29) She copes quite well with it but went to the GP a couple of years ago only to be told that it's not recognised by the NHS and private treatment starts at 3k!! It may be different as your daughter is younger

princesspadam · 05/02/2026 16:02

I never burped until I got pregnant with ds1 at age 30

dd has been the same and knew she was pregnant as she burped for the first time in her life

but I am very farty instead

StrawberryJamAndRaspberryPie · 05/02/2026 16:32

Sounds more like reflux
