he has always been scared of medicine, so I have lied blatantly and told him his milk tastes funny because he is ill
He still isn't drinking it
He is just 5 and we have recently been at the hospital for a visit (not for him) but am scared he has picked up something.

He's had the headache since about an hour ago, says he feels cold, then hot, his tummy is shivery, he's had a slight cough for a few days but no sore throat or anything.

I hate it when they are ill and am quite worried as he never has headaches

Please someone tell me to stop panicking. Moving house atm and nobody is getting much sleep, I doubt much will be had tonight..

What do I look out for and panic about, please? He said he feels 'stiff' but not sure which bit, will try neck test in a minute...

Strip him off for a bit, and either sponge him down with tepid water, or give him a tepid bath.

You are not the only to hate it when they are ill, I usually feel quite helpless even though mine will take Calpol or Nurofen. I wonder if the medicine is less detectable in fruit juice?

Keep an eye out for rashes, an aversion to light or a stiff neck. DON'T PANIC!!!

NotABanana · 14/06/2008 18:35

TBH I would ring NHS direct for advice

Flightybitchreturns · 14/06/2008 18:37

Thanks
His neck seems Ok, glands are up but not sore and doesn't hurt at the back, he can bend it to touch his chest iyswim.
He doesn't want a bath, is huddled under blanket. I hope it's nothing major, as we have a really busy week coming up, things are already pushed to the hilt.

Arghhh

He hasn't been ill since he stopped going to school at Easter.

Thanks Nab. I might just do that. It always helps to tell someone professional for some reason, stops you feeling quite so alone in the responsibility I think.
Though of course that's not quite true!!

Will make sure he hasn't a rash too. If he'll let me..

Remember you don't need to have all the watch signs for it to be menigitis so keep a close eye.

No reaction, just the taste I think...can't blame him really! But he freaks out.

He just had a bit as the nurse from NHS told him to!

His temp went up to 39.3 though so she has passed the details onto our OOH and they should call us.
Terrifying isn't it, his eyes hurt and his head but he is smiling..she said if he gets very shivery or fits at all, go straight to A&E or ring an ambulance

I hope he will shake it off, that is reassuring that it could be a virus.

Flightybitchreturns · 14/06/2008 19:16

Shit. He just went for a wee and said his legs ache when he walks

Now I am getting worried.

GodI am not cut out to be a parent.

OP posts:
Eve34 · 14/06/2008 19:19

Know you must be so worried, maybe go to A&E just to get him checked out - or the out of hours doctor, or walk in clinic. Don't sit there worrying, if you concerned get someone to check him out. Better to be safe than sorry. x

Flightybitchreturns · 14/06/2008 19:24

Yes I might take him up there, he has a little makr on the back of his thigh, it isn't dark but is like a faint bruise that won't disappear and it was probably there already but I am freaking out now.
Temp has gone down slightly tho.

Going to ring my mum and get her to come with us to hold baby.

OP posts:
hayley2u · 14/06/2008 19:25

ring them back!!. if his temp gets too high youmight have to get ambulance

Flightybitchreturns · 14/06/2008 19:34

I rang but he said they have our details and wait for a call
Will go at once if he seems worse.
He is sitting up watching fireman sam and says his head is 'fine'
Oh dear

Thanks for all the help x

He really needs to get his temp down, he'll feel loads better then - can you try and bribe him with anything to take some paracetamol? Not ideal I know, but needs must!

NotABanana · 14/06/2008 20:10

shit

a bruise that won't disappear

is it purple?

Flightybitchreturns · 14/06/2008 20:48

The bruise seems to be stable, it isn't purple, it is a pale sort of one, I think probably just one of many larger ones which he obtains on a daily basis...we did go up there by which time he had wolfed his fishfingers and was trying to make himself dizzy by walking round in circles to the car.
We sat in the waiting room while he mucked about with his transformer we brought, then someone else went in who was being sick and I decided that rather than hang around to catch something worse we would come home and monitor him tonight!
He seems much cooler, had a teaspoon of calpol in the end with some jam, and is having his milk (also with secret calpol!)

Phew.
I think he will either be better or worse tomorrow but it really didn't seem worth bothering the Dr with as he was insisting his head was now 'fine'.

Fingers crossed it was just a little spike and he's Ok.
Thanks so much for all your help and reassurance everyone.
I shan't sleep much as shall be watching and waiting for any worsening, but they are both off to land of nod as we speak

OP posts:
NotABanana · 14/06/2008 20:55

2 lots of calpol?

QuintessentialShadows · 14/06/2008 20:59

You might consider suppositories for him (paracetamol) if getting him to take calpol orally is a problem. It works fast, will not come up again if there is a tummy bug, can totally recommend them.

Flightybitchreturns · 14/06/2008 21:05

Never heard of them Quint, I will look into. Thanks...might be easier!

Nab, it says on the bottle 1 or 2 spoons for up to age 6, he is 5, so he had maybe 3/4 of a spoonful with the jam,(about 7pm) and then one in his bockle, well actually he hasn't really drunk that yet...maybe when he wakes again he will have more.

Sorry for confusion, I am half asleep myself!

OP posts:
NotABanana · 14/06/2008 21:07

I thought you weren't supposed to split a dose like that.

Hope he is soon better anyway.

Flightybitchreturns · 14/06/2008 21:13

Really? Oh God what have I done now?

It is the only way to get it down him though. Until I can go get some supps

OP posts:
NotABanana · 14/06/2008 21:14

I could be wrong, don't panic. Start another thread - someone will know.

Flightybitchreturns · 14/06/2008 21:27

Have done

OP posts:
NotABanana · 15/06/2008 17:02

How is he today?
