Resting heart rate of 85bpm

A group of us were talking the other week about heart rates and Apple Watches etc. Everybody seemed to have a very low resting HR in the 60s and I checked mine, it was 85 sitting down! Since then I’ve monitored it over the week and my resting is 85bpm even while lying down and watching tv.

is this too high?

It’s a little on the high side (I am not a medical professional)

How much cardio do you do? Fast walking, running, cycling, hiking etc.

weaselwords · 14/12/2025 15:36

Nope. It’s completely normal for you.

BadgernTheGarden · 14/12/2025 15:41

Google says 60 - 100 so you're in the normal range.

Sillysoggyspaniel · 14/12/2025 15:42

How old are you? Are you overweight? Any medical issues? All of this helps determine if it's high or normal for you.

xmas2025 · 14/12/2025 15:42

Thank you. No I don’t do much excerise if I’m honest at the moment - have 2 very young children and never find the time. I should probably start.

@Sillysoggyspanieli am 34. Not massively overweight, maybe a little. No medical issues.

No its normal nothing to worry about.

Alexasashes · 14/12/2025 15:43

It's normal.

Do you have any symptoms like palpation and skips? And even then can mostly still be a normal rate. It's not tachycardia, under 100 so classed as normal.

Mine is 60-70 but I'm on a beta blocker.

Do you feel any issues? Try not to hyper focus on it. I done that once and made myself ill with worry.

Floorclean · 14/12/2025 15:45

It’s not just sitting down

it’s lying down uninterrupted for a few mins after no exercise.

Try it overnight and I bet you get much different numbers

Then I'd say normal for you. If you find time to exercise and lose a little weight it'll come down, but if you aren't having any issues I wouldn't stress over it. I'm always told mine is low at 52-55, but that's before doing loads of exercise is taken into account. Then it's normal for me.

BadgernTheGarden · 14/12/2025 15:45

I'm low, usually low 50s but no symptoms so no one seems worried, and no I'm not an athlete! Far from it.

xmas2025 · 14/12/2025 15:48

@Floorcleanyes this is lying down for a while at night time. It’s pretty high while I sleep as well.

Thanks everyone. Maybe nothing to worry about as no other symptoms but might just mention it next time I’m at the doctors

72 is your resting heart beat
not 85
and within normal range

mamakoukla · 14/12/2025 18:29

Have you recently been under any stress? This could be actual stress but also illness, lack of sleep, vaccinated etc. It has taken two weeks for my resting heart rate to return to the low 50s. When I was vaccinated, it was up in the 80s. Many factors can affect resting heart rate. I find it also rises a bit after eating, maybe for a couple of hours.

edit - I would probably take into account if there are any other symptoms eg getting breathless, blood pressure. I’m not a healthcare professional

TalulahJP · 14/12/2025 18:55

do your blood pressure. that’s important as it can be dangerous uf too high and you don’t feel it.

BlondeCircus · 14/12/2025 19:06

That is actually a normal heart rate, and then your body regulates it further to suit you. Iyswim.

Your heart has a nerve supply which regulates its rate according to your lifestyle. However, if that heart is removed and transplanted into another person the nerve supply is cut, and the heart beats at its own, normal rate, which is generally between 85/100 bpm and can be higher if e.g. it’s a child’s heart.

I had a heart transplant earlier this year. My resting heart rate was typically 50 BPM, and actually it might have been lower, because it was kept at that rate by my ICD so it didn’t actually beat on its own.

My transplanted heart rate is approx 95/98 BPM because it no longer has a nerve supply. In some patients the nerve supply does re-grow, but only in about 50% of people.

How is your lifestyle. What might you be doing which is causing your heart rate to be higher?

xmas2025 · 14/12/2025 21:05

@AnyoneWhoHasAHeartwow, that is super fascinating!! And pretty incredible really that heart transplants can be done.

My lifestyle is average. Not amazing, but not awful either. Definitely improvements to be made there.
