im so fed up of my skin!!
has anyone suffered with perioral dermatitis that would share their regime on how to get rid of it!!

I have doxycycline on the way today and I’ve ordered some fluoride free toothpaste from Amazon! Today I’ve started with literally just washing with water and pat drying and leaving it alone! But it’s so dry and irritating! My face looks a mess! I don’t even want to leave the house!

any advice would be appreciated
thank you xxx

Probably not much help OP but I have it a little bit of this round my nose after overdoing it with tretinoin. Finding it really sore and itchy so you have my sympathy 💐. I've stopped the tret and am absolutely smothering it with rich moisturiser (skin food from welleda) in the hope that helps. It's making it feel less tight at least so fingers crossed. Hopefully someone will be along soon with more experience to offer.

I had something that looked the same as your photo on and off for 2.5 years. In the end mine turned out to be a combination of a damaged skin barrier and seborrheic dermatitis and cleared up very quickly with dandruff shampoo!

I used Nizoral shampoo (active ingredient ketoconazole) and a basic moisturiser with niacinamide (cerave PM).

Not saying that yours is also this, but if you've tried everything else maybe consider ruling out seborrheic dermatitis.

Daimyum · 16/11/2025 10:37

I second using ketaconazole shampoo to wash your face. Worth a try

Crofthead · 16/11/2025 10:38

I had this, zero base helped me

YellowBlueStar · 16/11/2025 10:48

I had this a few years ago and I do sympathise- it was horrible. I tried lots of things but it only properly cleared after a 3 month course of oxytetracycline from the doctors. I also discovered propolis cream which has been amazing. I still use it on my face everyday and haven't had any problems since. When my face felt really sore, I used the gel straight from the leaves of my aloe vera plant to soothe it.
I hope you get it sorted OP.

Fucidin cream and SLS free toothpaste.

Natasha1993 · 17/11/2025 12:17

Thank you everyone for your responses 🥰
I have a gp appointment today as I’m hoping they will give me antibiotics! I ordered them from the online pharmacy but my order was rejected! 😩
I have tried the fucidin cream which didn’t do much but I have ordered SLS free toothpaste and it’s coming today. I’ve tried multiple moisturisers and they just seem to make my face better as it’s not as tight and sore but the next morning I’m waking up with even more little pimples. So I’m trying to dry them out but that’s causing it to be really tight and sore! Hopefully the gp is some help! Fingers crossed ❤️

For me it was a fungal thing, using Canesten cream twice a day sorted things out pretty quickly for me after more than a year of trying different things. I think part of the problem is that there are similar symptoms and potentially a number of different causes so finding the right treatment is a bit hit and miss

My rash looks exactly like yours at the moment OP. I had it before, around two years ago. At the time I was taking a nasal spray with a steroid in and I stopped that and the rash cleared up very quickly, but this time I can't work out what's making it flare up - I'm not using any form of steroid and don't use fluoride toothpaste anyway.

Sometimes it seems to be calming down and drying out but then suddenly gets red and angry again or a new lump appears somewhere else really quickly. I feel so self-conscious!

I've found Savlon helps a bit. Maybe I just need to be more consistent with it. I might go down the same route as you and ask GP for an oral antibiotic.

Thanks for starting this thread. There is really useful information on here. Thanks to everyone for sharing info.

Natasha1993 · 17/11/2025 16:43

So I’ve been to see the gp today and they have agreed it looks like perioral dermatitis so they have prescribed me antibiotics and an antibiotic gel to use for 3 months!!

I will keep posted over the next few weeks with results! Thank you everyone ❤️

I second fucidin cream (I use this for occasional flare ups) and sls and fluoride free toothpaste. Tranexamic acid serum was what finally got rid of it for me when it was really bad. I’ve also realised I’m sensitive to linalool, which is added to the majority of face creams, so I have to be really careful about what I put on my skin - might be worth cutting out all creams and adding back in slowly when you’ve got it under control.

TotallyUninspired · 17/11/2025 16:49

I see you have antibiotics now, but FYI, when I had it a few years ago, the GP prescribed azelaic acid (also available without a prescription) and that cleared it up after months of annoying stinging blisters around my mouth and eyes.

Natasha1993 · 17/11/2025 17:15

ah that’s handy to know I will order the azelaic acid too! Thanks so much!

I had this on and off for years. One thing that really helped calm it for me was Savlon. No idea why but it was amazing for me.

impressivelycunty · 17/11/2025 17:28

I had this a few months ago - with a combination of antibiotics (8 weeks) and anti-bacterial/antibiotic cream it eventually went after about 10 weeks. Make sure you stay the course.

YellowBlueStar · 17/11/2025 17:29

I hope the anti biotics work. I noticed a difference very quickly when I was on them. Do let us know how you get on.

FcukBreastCancer · 17/11/2025 17:30

I've had it. What cured it

6 week low dose antibiotics
No steroids ever again. It got worse initially
Zinc based creams and potions
Rare make up but mineral based

Antihistamine62 · 17/11/2025 17:32

My kids suffer from this and what cleared it up was Hydromol ointment. Used morning and night. I still use it daily on them to prevent any flares x

FcukBreastCancer · 17/11/2025 17:32

Oh for face cream i switched to la roche possay tolerance (or similar wording) and avene (cicliffate or something like that ;)

countdowntonap · 17/11/2025 17:40

@Natasha1993 I had this for the first time this January until August. Then when I went on a long holiday (18 days) it disappeared.
I thought it must have been the sunlight benefitting my skin, but when I came home and returned to my regular eating pattern I had a flare up on the first day! It was a sauce that I put on my daily salad that caused it! I never would’ve known if I hadn’t have taken the 18 day break.
can you do an elimination diet?

Specialagentblond · 17/11/2025 17:46

my youngest had this. Cleared up with anti fungal cream after we tried antibiotics etc.

orbital12 · 17/11/2025 18:48

@countdowntonap Do you know which ingredient(s) in the sauce caused it? Now I've written that down I realise it would be very hard to tell as you're hardly going to try every ingredient individually 🙈 but just in case you have some idea.

Unfortunately not. And I hate to say it, but I’d still be suffering with it now if I hadn’t have taken that holiday and had the instant reaction when it returned. I’ve had pretty much perfect skin all my life, so tried all the tips online to get rid of it - but turns out my skin just didn’t like Aldi fake Nando’s sauce 😂

Mollydoggerson · 18/11/2025 09:45

Fucidine cream cleared it for me. It flared up at the start of perimenopause for me.

Natasha1993 · 19/11/2025 16:56

UPDATE-

this day 2 of the antibiotics and anti biotic gel and as you can see from the original photograph my chin area appears less bumpy in a sense of small little white heads. The redness is still there however it looks a little worse now as this photograph was taken just after I had washed my face and applied the gel. I will update again on Monday to see it after a week ❤️
