May have a tiny shard of glass in my eye, but can not see it!

Hello

Tonight I got such a shock, a glass worktop saver/chopping board literally exploded while I was standing at it, only had it a few months. I moved it back and it just knocked against the metal fruit bowl.

I feel like there is something now in my right eye... DH has used eye wash but I am so bad with water on my face and eyes that it sent me into an anxiety attack and I cried a lot. Still feel its in there. It has had a lot of saline in it and tears.

Going to call optician in morning but I am looking and I cant see anything. I cant just go to hospital now as I am exhausted (I have M.E) and I have kids that are in bed.

Go to hospital!

hufngids · 03/11/2025 23:41

Getting glass in your eye is an emergency and you really should go to A&E. An optician wouldn’t be able to remove it and you would just be delaying treatment.

LaserPumpkin · 03/11/2025 23:43

This is an A&E job I think. Do you have a local eye hospital at all? That might be better than regular A&E if you do and they’re open.

Shutuptrevor · 03/11/2025 23:46

If you won’t seek medical attention tonight what are you hoping for from this thread?

catontheironingboard · 03/11/2025 23:47

If you eye is scratched or irritated, it may feel like something is there even if it isn’t. Having said that, I think A&E this evening, I’m afraid 😟 (unless you have a minor injuries unit near you, or an OOH that you can get booked into?)

You can’t be too careful with eyes, and you really do not want it working its way deeper into the cornea or necessitating an eye operation to get it out. Sending you all good wishes, OP.

PeonyBulb · 03/11/2025 23:48

You need to go to hospital not an optician. We have a specific eye dept here that’s sorts thing like this out

Hollyhobbi · 03/11/2025 23:54

Hope you are on your way to the hospital!

fishtank12345 · 04/11/2025 00:11

Thanks guys I am not able to get there for various reasons I was hoping to wait until morning as my kids are in bed and I cant drive. I am scared. I was just a bit confused as I didn't see anything in it where I have the feeling.

I was hoping, I guess, to find out how something like this is treated.

LaserPumpkin · 04/11/2025 00:14

If you can’t get treatment tonight can you cover it with something so you don’t scratch it accidentally and make it worse?

LaserPumpkin · 04/11/2025 00:14

But honestly I’d wake the kids up and get DH to drive you.

Flibbertyfloo · 04/11/2025 00:17

They would treat it ASAP before infection sets in risking blindness. Go to A&E for goodness sake. I know your kids are in bed but your DH can stay with them. I understand chronic fatigue is crippling, but this is your vision we are talking about. You have to force yourself in the same way you would find a way if your child needed A&E.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 04/11/2025 00:18

I'm not surprised you can't see anything - it's glass, it's practically invisible.

If you really can't get the DC in the car then get a taxi and leave DH at home with the DC? Have someone come over and sit in the house while you and DH go?

Best case scenario you've got whatever it is out and it's just scratched. You might need antibiotics.

Worst case it's stuck in there, you go to sleep, and overnight it moves / you rub it and causes you serious damage.

It's your eyes, don't risk it.

TeaRoseTallulah · 04/11/2025 00:19

Hospital now! I cannot believe you're not their already. This isn't something that can wait until the morning.

Babyboomtastic · 04/11/2025 00:21

Your clearly have a husband, so get a taxi and go now.

I guess I thought that id be sat there for loads of hours anyway and id be better to rest and have it looked at tomorrow...I know I should go but the a&e wait times here are absolutely shocking. Maybe the opticians could get me seen quicker I was also thinking.

Some hospitals have eye casualty go there if nearby

FullOfMomsense · 04/11/2025 00:58

If you're not going, then use gauze or a clean dry cloth and lots of tape as an eyepatch, you must keep your eye closed to prevent more scratching. Do not poke at it.

You really need to get it checked out, this is a serious emergency and you need to have a backup plan. What if you'd cut your finger off?? Call a neighbour or a friend or anyone you trust to watch your kids and go

Valhalla17 · 04/11/2025 01:01

Get a taxi for goodness sake. Dont mess around with your eyes and this is definitely an emergency.

A&E will have sorted it and you’ll be back home before the opticians is even close to opening.

She doesn't need to call a neighbour or friend, she mentions her husband being around in the first post.

Hollyhobbi · 04/11/2025 02:06

The opticians will only send you to the hospital. Not quite the same thing but my sister hit me in the eye by accident with the edge of a birthday cake tray and my eye wouldn’t stop watering. It wasn’t sore just constantly watering. Had to have what the surgeon called a bandage put in my eye (like a clear contact lens) and then had it removed after a week. I had scratched my retina. The fact you can still feel something in your eye is worse!

JackdawLaw · 04/11/2025 02:15

Eye hospital if you can OP. I had to go once and I hate anything near my eye, but they were so good. They use numbing drops so you can’t feel anything and their light is so bright you can’t really see what they’re doing (I had a tiny bit of plastic in my eye - they swept it away super quickly)

Exactly this.

my husband is 36 and legally blind. I wouldn’t wish what he goes through on my worst enemy.
