baby won't stop crying....

I think I need help. DD2 (4 weeks tomorrow) won't stop crying unless I hold her upright and jig her up and down. She was throwing up profusely. HV mentioned reflux on wendesday, but said to feed her less and trust my instincts. Instincts shot to shit as I've had no sleep for two days. I phoned the MW this morning, who said phone the HV. HV said go to BFing support group. Baby is obviously in pain, but is it colic or reflux (hasn't thrown up for two days)? DH says phone a doctor. What should I do?

Poor you but needing to be upright does sound a bit like reflux, I would go see a GP, if they suspect reflux there are things they can give you to help.

Oh dear! It's hard isn't it when they won't stop crying and you're not sure what's wrong, you feel so powerless. It could well be colic or reflux. Does she want to feed? Have you tried Infacol or other such remedies? You could try your GP as I think there are remedies available for reflux - not an area I know much about, but I just wanted to post and give you some support. Someone more knowledgable might be along in a minute. Will she settle in a sling/baby harness?

sagitta · 06/06/2008 11:04

Do you think its reflux even if she hasn't thrown up for two days?

And yes, she does want to feed, but I sort of feel that that because its the only thing she knows how to do iyswim...would she not want to feed if it was reflux?

If she is feeding so not hungry, and still will not settle, pop her in her pushchair.Go for a little walk and you both might feel abit better.
Don't really know what to say do.Will your HV come roud and check her,so you know that she's alright health wise.
Try not the worry because the baby will pick up on that. And remember you are not a lone. Most first time moms go through a bad patch.

sagitta · 06/06/2008 11:08

second time mum...I just don't remember what to do

x post sagitta. She wants to feed you say.Have you checked in side her mouth. Is there any white on the inside of her cheeks?

mommy6 · 06/06/2008 11:10

Sorry thought she was your first.Nothing to be about. You should have seen me changing ds2 nappy, and he was my 6th.There was 17yrs between him and first ds though.lol

mommy6 · 06/06/2008 11:11

And i still come on here and ask for advice.

sagitta · 06/06/2008 11:16

not on cheeks, but her tongue is always white, which I guess is just milk...

OP posts:
mommy6 · 06/06/2008 11:20

Can you wipe the white off her tongue?

sagitta · 06/06/2008 11:24

she's just gone to sleep so I'm not going to try, lol

I would see the GP to check nothing is medically wrong.

My first (DS) sounds very much like your DD (could not put down for months), constant crying unless constant attention. My second (DD) is totally different and is happy to sleep in pram/moses basket, happy to lay on back and look at things. Sometimes, kids are just different, but to be on the safe side, check with doc and keep eye on her.

VictorianSqualor · 06/06/2008 11:26

How is she when she does feed sagitta?
Does she pull off at all?
Does she cry during feeds?

sagitta · 06/06/2008 11:28

She feeds as if she's never fed before. I seem to have tonnes of milk (bit like you, I think, VS) and she chokes on it. She's put on lots of weight, even though she was throwing up so much. No crying during feeds. She pulls off after about 10 mins, or because she's choking, but then starts crying again and looking for more. Am I overfeeding?

I'm only asking because ds2 was like this, and he had thrush.I didn't know at the time till my brill HV noticed.
Hope she has a good sleep and you can have a rest.

sagitta · 06/06/2008 11:30

Thanks for help, mommy6

foxythesnowfox · 06/06/2008 11:33

sorry I can't help on the reflux/colic, but do you have a sling? Its not a solution but it might help you to stop the crying temporarily and get something done?

mommy6 · 06/06/2008 11:33

Ds used to keep pulling away but still wanted to feed.It would be worth checking just for peace of mind.

sagitta · 06/06/2008 11:35

Will do. I have a sling, but it just makes her go to sleep, which is lovely, but then I have to sleep too and then we're up all night!

VictorianSqualor · 06/06/2008 11:37

The thrush thing is worth looking into, it does make them pull off because their mouth hurts, then there is also the fast let-down/oversupply thing but I don't see why that would make her cry after feeds unless she is still hungry.

It could be wind because of the fast flow of the milk, does she pull her legs up into her stomach at all?

Have you tried feeding her 'uphill', so she is above the nipple, have a look on kellymom for some uphill positions, apparently it helps them take in less air.

I don't know much about reflux but if you can rule out the fast let-down being the problem at least you'll know.

sagitta · 06/06/2008 11:42

That's a great site, VS - and it sounds very familiar. I reckon that's the problem...fastflow, then wind...

I've been doing Lex's feeds on one breast at a time and gently hand-expressing just enough to relieve the other breast of the pressure and can already see a difference in the milk supply, whereas before I'd feed one breast and put him straight on the other one because I needed him to feed from it!
