Parathyroid Surgery - advice please

Azuresky68 · 30/10/2025 14:56

I would like to know about parathroid surgery as I have an appointment mid November to discuss this. I am pretty anxious. Went to doctors over 2 years ago as I was always so tired. I am 69 , retired with an active lifestyle.
Tiredness only recently linked to my parathyroid when they detected high levels of calcium in my blood. I have had.treatment to remove a kidney stone. Last week I had a bone scan. Any advice about the operation would be great.

Hello again

I'm sorry, I keep losing the thread. The brain fog is hideous and clearly my use of technology just as bad.🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️

How is everyone doing???

My update, which I would appreciate any advice on Is that I have had the 4D CT scan &
Semil (?) but they were both inconclusive and now they have suggested exploratory Surgery.

I have been using AI to help me draft emails to the consultant. They suggested another scan (choline PET) at a London teaching hospital and the medication someone mentioned above in the meantime.

Due to my Stroke and the medication I am on Ai has written me an email template pushing for this further scan.

I think AI has focussed on London because the previous AI told me to ask for a referral to a London teaching AI has been very helpful to me but also tends to just go down one route to something unnecessarily.

The person they recommended at UCL age is Tarek Abdul Aziz They say he is explicitly recognised by patient network for managing complex parathyroid cases and is an active medical advisor parathyroid Charities.

At imperial College Hammersmith Hospital They have Recommended Mr FAUSTO PALAZZO or Miss Amiee DiMarco
They say Hammersmith Hospital House is one of the highest volume endocrine Surgery units in Europe high volume centres are proven to have the success rates when tracking down hidden gland.

The third one they have Recommended is Mr. Shad Khan (which some of you have mentioned). They say he is widely noted as the highest volume endocrine surgeon in the UK according to BAETS data he has extensive experience navigating cases where standard scans have failed to locate the problem issue.

Frankly, I'd have it done on the moon if that was my best location. So I'm open to any other locations. Does anyone have any thoughts on my three options??

They have given me an email template to ensure my Stroke (it makes general anaesthetic even more risky and the longer I'm under the riskier it is )and medication is highlighted in the referral. Another thing is that I have a keloid response to scars, so minimising cutting would be preferable.

With the hideous brain fog, I am getting very confused. So any straightforward non-complicated advice anyone can give me would be really appreciated.

I haven't joined the Facebook groups for two reasons one being. I need to set up a new email as I can't have it linked to my ordinary facebook for family reasons and that seems beyond me just now and secondly I can't process a lot of information so so many people with different opinions might be more confusing for me

I have so much going on at the moment, both healthwise and not healthwise that it's all just becoming overwhelming.

Sorry for any mistakes I'm using a voice to message which isn't always brilliant. I do try to pick up the mistakes before posting, but I'm finding it difficult to correct them at the moment🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️

I live next to a vets, the temptation to ask him if he would do the kind thing gets overwhelming!!!

I just noticed that people on here were talking about Shad Khan at Fostcote Hospital but AI has said he is at Oxford University Hospital.

I could pay for the initial consultation if it hasn't increased much over the £150 but I can't afford to pay for the operation privately.

Surgeons often have an NHS position (so he's at Oxford) and also undertake private work (Fostcote) alongside.

Thanks yes I realised that, I just thought the two hospitals were further apart than they probably are so he can probably commute to both.

As far as I know Mr. Khan is still €150 pounds for the first consultation. Mine was by telephone as I’m in Dublin.

Hi Azuresky68 i had surgery for hyperparathyroidism in 2018 - one gland removed. Surgery is the only solution!
Mine went absolutely fine- stayed overnight but back home the next day. Took it easy for a bout a month but to be honest I didn’t have that much discomfort.
I was just very relieved to get my life back!
There is a very helpful group on Facebook- Hyperparathyroid UK Action4Change - lots of useful information - I would definitely recommend joining it. They are very supportive.
Good luck!

My DH has the same surgery as theicemaidenismelting in 2019 and had a similar recovery.

Oh, that's good.

Maybe my next move should be trying to get a hold of him for a consultation?

Can anyone please tell me how to do that?

I'm glad your surgery went well.
I had mine in February 2025 after following the Facebook page.
My recovery was guick and I was immediately free of the awful symptoms.
Best money I ever spent!
