Has anyone tried hypnotherapy?

I have a session booked and don’t really know what to expect. Have tried lots of things over the years, but this is an attempt to go a little deeper. Talking therapies don’t seem to have got to the root of my troubles.

Any testimonies appreciated!

All I’m going to say, before the hypnotherapy huns jump on your thread and tell you how amazing it is, is that it is a very self-regulated industry, including ‘training’ and matters of ethical/conduct complaints.

I have. I went as talking therapy didn't really help. I wanted to get to the core issue, deep routed within me. Unfortunately, it didn't help and he said I wasn't that hypnotisable! He was legit and also worked with the NHS too. As in, some people are more susceptible to it than others.

Try a few sessions if you want but it wasn't for me. One thing it did give me was teach me how to really relax a bit like self hypnosis prep.

I've tried it - went to someone with excellent reviews, met first to discuss aims and it was very helpful indeed.

Paul McKenna has quite a few audio books out with great hypno sessions at the end on various topics - eg anxiety, confidence, losing weight etc I would try those first and see how you get on - it will be much cheaper and you'll get to see if you like it first.

Are you able to relax easily and move your brain into a state of sleepiness and relaxation, whilst sitting or lying down with someone in the room with you, talking to you?

I discovered I couldn't do this and therefore I couldn't be hypnotised

I got offered a free session at the university i worked at. We had a choice of therapies and the others were reiki and other alternatives. I am strong willed and thought it wouldnt work on me but it did. I was amazed. And the phobia i asked for help with was massively improved.i should have paid for more sessions or gone back when the phobia gradually came back.After a few months theeffect wore off.

Hypnotherapy huns...not helpful! But worth being cautious around any therapies.

Yes I have and it worked for me, I’m considering going back for a separate issue.
It’s like being half asleep, you kind of zone out but can hear them speaking to you. I’m certain I properly fell asleep during some sessions too but I liked it, I felt very relaxed afterwards and it worked for my particular issue so I’m very positive about it.

One of the most important criteria with hypnotherapy is that you really want to make the change, and that you are prepared to trust the hypnotherapy process. If you’re not willing to change and are not open-minded then it is unlikely to work. I say this as an (unregulated!) hypnotherapist. It might not be regulated but we do undergo lengthy training and supervised practice hours. Whilst we were practicing I had to come up with something that my practice partner could change for me using hypnotherapy, over a course of 5 weeks we did weekly sessions and it worked, so in my opinion hypnotherapy is a valid and successful addition to wellbeing. You’ve got nothing to lose and a lot to gain.

Are you suggestible, OP? Do you feel itchy if someone else is? Do you feel a bit sick sometimes if someone else is? If someone else talked about how exhausted they were, would you start feeling a bit tired yourself?

I’ve seen a susceptibility test which is where you look upwards with your eyes - the Spiegel eye roll test.
I don’t know if you can do that on yourself though!

I tried it for help with weight loss a few years ago and have to report little to no success. Whether this is down to me or the therapist I don't know.
I did quite enjoy the sessions, very relaxing.

That’s the thing @tartyflette I think a lot of therapy is about where you are on that journey, what you want and if you trust the process or not.
I really want to believe I can change (there are several issues I feel ready to tackle) and I think that the combination of my willingness & openness to change, having a good rapport with and trust in my therapist could mean great results.

I’ve tried Reiki - I enjoyed it and loved the therapist, she really put me at ease and the experience was great but it’s sort of worn off.

So hypnotherapy is all about de-hypnotising yourself. Thoughts and ideas have gotten into your head when you were vulnerable/susceptible to them (usually in childhood)
Hypnotherapy looks to bring you to a pre-sleep state of calm (similar to the way you would have been naturally as a child) where your mind becomes very impressionable. It then tries to de-hypnotise you as your reactions/feelings surrounding certain events have led you to think in a sort of brainwashed way and the plan is to reset you to 'normal' reactions/feelings as you were originally designed to have before you were conditioned to be another way through bad experiences or implanted ideas at a young age.
Everyone is hypnotisable to some degree if they mentally invest in the process.

I can't be hypnotised either and im quite gutted about that, as I think it really works.
Theres a poster on here called eyeswideshut and she is a hypnotherapist. She offers you a free zoom session to see if you can be hypnotised. That's how I found out I can't be. I believe she is very good at what she does, I've read others reviews on mn. I would recommend her.

Hypnotherapy cured my insomnia. I would recommend but make sure the therapist is a member of the NCH.
