What conditions could have their day like ADHD/ASD

MyPinkTraybake · 03/10/2025 20:45

This isn't meant to undermine ADHD/ASD or any other conditions (I myself have ADHD) or the support available for these. There has been much more awareness and public recognition (albeit not translating into enough funding) of neurodivergence. In the past there has been widespread public awareness raising around cancer which has undoubtedly improved diagnosis.

So what could be next? I'd like to see things like respiratory disease and conditions having their day like COPD and bronchiectasis, even asthma. I have a lung condition myself and am lucky there's a small amount of support but there's no pulmonary rehab for me as I'm not ill enough yet, but it's also hard for me to take part in mainstream exercise, and I have to travel 200 miles for basic spirometry because my local hospital cannot get it together. Also I just don't think we hear enough about lung conditions - there's something that makes them quite hidden and I'm not sure why - you can't see them but not being able to breathe normally is like being in a living nightmare. So that's my rant. What conditions do you think should get more airtime?

SWAN children (syndrome without a name) and older persons.

Hypothyroidism, Ehlers Danlos Syndrome & hyper mobility, Charcot-Marie Tooth and/or HNPP (Hereditary Neuropathy with Pressure Palsies), Addison’s Disease. Some are rare, some are more common, but they are all often misdiagnosed, or not diagnosed for ages (and yes, I do have a vested interest, as I have most of them!)

EducatingArti · 03/10/2025 21:26

I'm hoping there will be breakthroughs in understanding and treating conditions such as fibromyalgia, long COVID and ME.

Bombshelter · 03/10/2025 21:28

Deafness.

Food intolerances and allergies that aren’t peanuts.

Shmoigel · 03/10/2025 21:29

Im hoping there is even more awareness about Endometriosis

Chazbots · 03/10/2025 21:33

I think issues arising from the weight loss drugs. Not knocking them but they usually roll drugs out relatively slowly for testing in the general population to see trends/issues on the mass scale.

Strokes too, littke support post-stroke.

Awareness of muscle losd & bone mass for women post-menopause.

GoodOnPaper · 03/10/2025 21:50

Familial Hypercholesterolaemia - 1 in 250 people have it and it increases risk of heart disease and strokes. Genetic issue that stops the liver filtering cholesterol from blood (not related to lifestyle, weight, smoking). You need to take cholesterol lowering medication as diet not enough to reduce risk.

Can cause little raised bumps on skin, including around eyes as well as on hands, feet etc. Like mis-shaped yellow tinged flat warts. (Xanthomas/xanthelasmas) www.google.com/search?q=Xanthelasmas&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-gb&client=safari#vhid=MZXGU18UxktvmM&vssid=_eardaJfJK7aohbIP3drvuQ0_175

Dyscalculia, totally ignored.

I have EDS and sadly to say there won't be any awareness or improvements whilst the tiktok grifters are still in force.

Preparedforjobnottolast · 03/10/2025 23:14

Left up to today’s medics, not a lot of hope.
they just do not know how to think outside the box.

The only doctor I believed moved me from derriford to freedom fields a Plymouth hospital now demolished but only hospital as a young girl to get on top of under active thyroid in year of 91) but freedom fields hospital saved me a child.

Thank you but the hospitals of today are sadly different. They do not think outside the box. Its very black and white.

I predict there will be greater understanding of neurology and therefore all these ND labels will be broken open.

I also predict greater understanding of the mechanism of post viral fatigue.

Cinaferna · 03/10/2025 23:24

ME, PVS and CF. (And Lyme disease in UK) For far too long people have suffered debilitating fatigue and been told to stop wasting time and just exercise more. Very gradually, it is beginning to be understood better. But it really annoys me when medics decide something doesn't exist just because they are ignorant about it.

Oh yes I think neurology, also dementia. That's the thing to cure.

I think a lot of things will happen quite fast in next 10 - 15 years. With AI and that detecting disease and patterns.

Eczema

BestZebbie · 04/10/2025 01:30

The menopause seems to be talked about more as a potentially life-limiting issue than it used to be, I think that is 'having a day' to some extent.

badskinkid · 04/10/2025 02:50

I'd love there to be more discussion around chronic and severe eczema/dermatitis, the range of symptoms and how it impacts daily life. As a child I was always told I would grow out of it, despite my mother sitting right next to me with exactly the same condition. And that's not to mention the way everyone assumes it's a mild illness where you're just a bit itchy on occasion, maybe for a couple of weeks a few times a year. Nothing about the immunosuppressants, the constant pain, the restrictions on activities, the body image issues, or the infections.

Outside of my own interest, I'd love to see more awareness for endometriosis, thyroid conditions, neuropathies, rarer autoimmune conditions and allergies. Whenever I hear people talk about their experiences with lesser-known chronic illnesses I learn so much, I'd love everything to get more of a spotlight than it currently does.

Really interesting thread. Lots of people suffering

Seagullsandsausagerolls · 04/10/2025 03:20

Neurofibromatosis, adenomyosis and endometriosis all of which have royally kicked my butt this year.

Me too!

dizzydizzydizzy · 04/10/2025 08:50

Not a condition, but I think the awareness around the importance of improving the microbiome in the gut will increase a lot in the next few years. For this reason, I think a wider range of fermented foods will become available.

What do you mean by 'broken open'?

I think EDS and hypermobility would be the obvious ones for focus on the back of ND, seeing as they are often associated with autism. I had an EDS diagnosis before I got my ASD diagnosis.

Nothing derogatory, I and my family members have diagnoses of this, I just feel the labels as they stand are short sighted. I think with more understanding will come a better way to frame these things.

SilverLining77 · 04/10/2025 10:50

I expect there will be the continuation of the move towards self diagnosis as an alternative, especially considering ongoing financial and service cuts.

I'd like to see more discussion about functional neurological conditions.

Well thank you for explaining a bit further. I didn’t necessarily think you being derogatory but I had no idea what you meant.

What do you mean about the diagnoses being short sighted?
