What conditions could have their day like ADHD/ASD

This isn't meant to undermine ADHD/ASD or any other conditions (I myself have ADHD) or the support available for these. There has been much more awareness and public recognition (albeit not translating into enough funding) of neurodivergence. In the past there has been widespread public awareness raising around cancer which has undoubtedly improved diagnosis.

So what could be next? I'd like to see things like respiratory disease and conditions having their day like COPD and bronchiectasis, even asthma. I have a lung condition myself and am lucky there's a small amount of support but there's no pulmonary rehab for me as I'm not ill enough yet, but it's also hard for me to take part in mainstream exercise, and I have to travel 200 miles for basic spirometry because my local hospital cannot get it together. Also I just don't think we hear enough about lung conditions - there's something that makes them quite hidden and I'm not sure why - you can't see them but not being able to breathe normally is like being in a living nightmare. So that's my rant. What conditions do you think should get more airtime?

Dyscalculia, totally ignored.

I have EDS and sadly to say there won't be any awareness or improvements whilst the tiktok grifters are still in force.

@BoarBrush I'd never heard of hypermobility until I had surgery last year and consultant told me I had a connective tissue disorder which caused my poor scarring.

This led me to an osteopath who diagnosed HDS. In researching it, I think it might be EDS. I have an autistic son and I'm pretty sure a couple of relatives would be diagnosed if they were young today.

Imagine, I'm 48, it explains so many things about my body!

But I think the people making the reels are great. Why do you say they are grifters?

Nothing derogatory, I and my family members have diagnoses of this, I just feel the labels as they stand are short sighted. I think with more understanding will come a better way to frame these things.

The reframing is something I'm really hoping for and looking forward to! I feel a lot of the names for ND conditions are actually quite misleading, such as ADHD with the broad range of symptoms beyond "attention deficit" and "hyperactivity." I'm hopeful that neurological research and better understanding will begin to clarify and reframe so many of these conditions!

When I read ‘have their day’ I thought you meant that they would become unfashionable diagnoses and drift out of view, like hysteria did for example.

That’s often how things go with mental conditions. The lines move and one condition rises to prominence and another condition is never diagnosed anymore. People don’t change - just the way that they are categorised and defined.

Oh that's an interesting take. Quite possible - we will look back (not me I'll be dead) in a hundred years and think how funny that we diagnosed ADHD etc. There's talk (for example) of reclassifying schizophrenia as psychosis spectrum disorder, one that particularly interests me as my DB has this.

Dysautonomia

I think inflammation/allergies will be found to be at the base of so many things from alcoholism/addiction to cancer

My daughter has dyscalculia, she also has adhd. She went through school being "bad at maths ".However once she switched to algebra she suddenly understood most of the letter problems.

Womens health 100%
its absolutely shocking that in the UK the only drug most people can access to relief their symptoms is birth control.

Deafness.

Non-verbal, semi-verbal (selective mutism), speech impairment, audio processing issues.

I have to deal with some of these sometimes. The lack of accessibility to services and lack of awareness from both the public and medical professionals about people who struggle with this especially full time is appalling! Our society is not equipped for those whose lives are limited by these conditions and it's appalling! Some can't access services or treatment from their homes unless they have someone who can help. Not everyone does.

A simple working textphone is a problem for most organisations (including DWP) to introduce or for communication companies to produce or modernise and either sell or hand out to individuals who need them.

I'm happy to have inadvertently created a little awareness in a couple of places that have ended up passing on the message and implemented something useful. However, it's a drop in the ocean.

Lewy Body Dementia and its links to Parkinson’s and possibly ADHD.
My Dad has Parkinson’s (as did his mum plus LBD) and he has just been diagnosed with LBD too.
I have ADHD and am terrified it’s all linked but there is not enough research on it.
