Your iron / ferritin is low. I've felt the same and I'm now on tablets.

Parksinyork · 21/08/2025 20:15

When my B12 was at this level my GP deacribed it as a raw deal and told me to buy some high strength tablets from H and B.

BlaBlaBlaBlaBlaBlaBlaBlaBlaBla · 21/08/2025 20:18

The nhs will tell you 230 is normal for b12 but in most other countries that level would be treated with b12 injections. Your Ferritin level is also low despite the nhs saying it’s fine.

User3456 · 21/08/2025 20:24

I have got ME/CFS, bloods ok. If supplements don't help it's worth keeping a diary and seeing if there's a pattern with your tiredness. For ME/CFS one of the defining criteria is post exertional malaise (extreme fatigue that can hit a day or two after exertion).
In the meantime do what you reasonably can to avoid viral infections as they can make it so much worse.
Really hope you can get to the bottom of it and start to feel better soon

Tillow4ever · 21/08/2025 22:13

Your ferritin is way below optimal, although I can’t recall the optimal number. Your vitamin B12 is below optimal - what was your folate level?
Vitamin D is below optimal, but without knowing the unit of measurement I’m not sure how far off.

summerday25 · 21/08/2025 22:31

I don’t know much about the others but your ferritin is low. Dependent on what you read, optimum levels are over 100. Mine was 5 and I felt terrible, exhausted constantly.

Ive put the opimal numbers beside them in brackers... my folate was 7.6 so that was fine

Your ferritin is too low it should be supplemented. Nhs recommend it should be supplemented if below 30 but 70- 100 is optimal. I'd also supplement b12 - yours is again too low but not something the nhs will pick up on. You can get sprays on Amazon that are better absorbed than tablet.

I don't know about the others but vit d is recommended for most at least during the winter months

AltitudeCheck · 21/08/2025 22:53

I agree your ferritin is on the low side of normal. Did your blood test include a Hb result too? Do you have heavy periods?

Low Hb and ferritin can cause tiredness as at that ferritin level you could try a daily iron tablets. Ferrous sulfate 300mg or Ferrous fumarate 200mg once a day. It's cheap to buy online. Start with every other day if you find it upsets your stomach.

B12 can also be bought online, 1000 microgram (1mg) tablets one a day.

Everyone in the UK should take Vit D 400 units a day through the winter, again while your levels aren't low by nhs standards they also aren't particularly high and a daily 400-800 unit dose would help keep them up as the amount on sunlight you see declines.

Allsizes8to14 · 21/08/2025 22:58

I’ve just had quite similar blood results to you! Apart from ferratin lower so was 11, then retested at 17, but because ‘normal’ GP said no action required!?!? Am permanent tired and corners of my mouth have cracked open. Not sure even who to speak to for advice 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

Thesoundofmusic23 · 21/08/2025 23:06

NHS sets a very low bar for levels - your iron and possibly B12 is low. Take a good quality clean vitamin supplement and hopefully you feel better. Take the iron along side vit c - juice or similar to help absorption. I felt rubbish on similar levels and had two iron infusion in hospital - felt like a new human.

Bex4567 · 22/08/2025 00:02

Buy ferrous fumerate and vitamin c, take them together every other day
they’re both pretty cheap to buy and your ferritin is way too low

No you haven’t, you have put lab ranges in brackets. Optimal is vastly different - remember most people only get bloods done when unwell, so the lab averages are for already sick people.

folate is borderline the lowest it can be for you to utilise B12. It needs to be upper quartile of the lab range to be optimal.

I was sick for several years - so tired I was falling asleep at my desk at work. I was in and out of doctors offices and learning to read blood test results because of it.

summerday25 · 22/08/2025 08:31

I’d take every day, I tried every other after reading advice online but it wasn’t enough. Also, ferrous fumerate is slightly better on your tummy than ferrous sulphate is known to be.

When do we need one and when the other? I've been feeling exhausted for years, finally I had my bloods taken but my GP says everything is in order. I checked and I'm in the lower end of the parametres but I don't know which one should I take. Thank you.

I think they are similar, but fumerate is more gentle. I do take mine with orange juice and a vit c tablet, and I’ve introduced high fibre foods into my diet to help with this. There are NICE guidelines which stipulate when an iron infusion should be given too, but these are often ignored by GP’s I’ve found!
