Hello, previously a long term lurker but I think I have been bitten by the MN posting bug.

Am going on a two week holiday to Thailand and really don't want to have my period when I am out there.

Not on an contraception (due to complications/health issues) and am wondering if there is a pill/injection or anything I could take so I don't have my period when I am out there.

Thanks for your infinate wisdom!

BUMP

Im really also curious to see if anyone knows anything about this.

Im of on my hols soon to, my period is due midway through our holidays, im currently not using any contraception pill ect. Since having my DDs I suffer from terrible PMT. I tried the minipill after after having DD1 (now 5) but this just made the PMT worse.

Not really looking forward to PMT on hols tbh. Its often gets so bad that i make DHs life a misery.

Lets have another bump for good measure!

Yessss! There are tablets just prescribed for stopping a period when you are not on Pill.Only the combined pill is ok to take "back to back" to stop a period anyway.
Mainly they work "hormonally" like the pill in some ways,so you would need to talk to your GP or Family Planning trained Practice Nurse(if she is,as these are complex issues)to ensure they are safe for you to take. The tablets they prescribe I believe are often used to stop any type of prolonged bleeding.HTH Happy Holidays!

PuppyMonkey · 30/05/2008 12:01

This just makes me think: If there was indeed an effective pill to stop women having periods, wouldn't we all be blardy taking it!!!

Pinkchampagne · 30/05/2008 12:02

Blimmin right, puppymonkey!!

luvaduck · 30/05/2008 12:03

yes you can go to your GP and ask to be prescribed northisterone, a progesterone hormone that will delay menstruation. nursejo is right you can take them to stop prolonged bleeding as well as delaying a period.

Hulababy · 30/05/2008 12:04

Yes, there are. My mum used to take them when she went on holiday, etc.

Sidge · 30/05/2008 12:05

You can ask your GP for norethisterone.

You take it whilst you're away, then stop when you get home and you will then bleed.

PuppyMonkey · 30/05/2008 12:07

I tell you what doesn't work - the blardy mini pill. Grrrrrrr...

Nursejo · 30/05/2008 12:09

Noooohhh! dont think it works quite like that.Alright to use as short term use.

The depo provera injection works well like this though.

90%+ womens periods stop all together,
2.5% stop after 2-3 months,
2.5% have irregular periods, and then they stop.
2.5% never get on with it as causes bleeds 2-3 times a month etc.

The injection can be used until someone is in their 50's as well.

Not that I'm a Rep or anything! Just passing info on.

PuppyMonkey · 30/05/2008 12:11

I'd be in the last group, I bet Nursejo.

Can you really use if you're say 41...?

luvaduck · 30/05/2008 12:11

yes it does work like that - delaying menstruation until you stop - you start bleeding about 5 days after stopping
(am a GP)

Nursejo · 30/05/2008 12:18

Provided there are no other risk factors ie Smoking ,Obesity (ie High BMI)Family History of clots etc.Age isnt an issue like it is with the Combined Pill.

Go discuss it with GP or Practice Nurse (thats what I am,although family planning isnt my speciality)

I do see lots of patients that use this and are very happy with it.

PuppyMonkey · 30/05/2008 12:24

Thanks Nursejo... may well try this as minipill just makes me have irregular bleeding.

Sorry for the hijack by the way!!

luvaduck · 30/05/2008 12:26

the only thing i'd say about the depo is that i would try the mini pill first just to see if you are ok with it - some people have horrible progesterone side effects and some don't
if you are fine then yes depo is a great contraceptive but once you've had the injection its in your blood stream for several months - so try the mini pill first (same hormone just different way of giving it)

another great prog based contraceptive is the mirena coil - release the hormone locally so less gets into your blood, less side effects. can take it out of you hate it etc.

but in terms of delayign period for a short holiday as OP asked - northiesterone tables are the way to go

have fun i love thailand, the food beaches yum yum

PuppyMonkey · 30/05/2008 12:36

Yes, am on minipill now luvaduck... only side effects is the irregular bleeding..

Sister got pregnant while on the coil... puts me off a bit. Plus I'm a coward about anything like that, smears etc..

luvaduck · 30/05/2008 12:42

there are two types of coil - copper one (crap IMO) and mirena (great)
however no contracpetive is 1005 the mirena is better than the minipill in terms of effectiveness
another alternative is a new minipill called cerazette - usually have no periods at all, and you've got 12 hour window instead of 3 hours. its a bit more pricey (for nhs not you) so a lot of gps don't offer it first time. you could go and say having probs with irregular bleeding and remembering to take - could i try cerazette??

if you are fine with minipill side effect wise (eg bloating acne mood swings etc) then you will be fine with depo. family planning assocation are recommending that its not given for more than 5 years because of risk of osteoporosis but fine for under that

luvaduck · 30/05/2008 12:42

urrrgh excuse typos

twocutedarlings · 30/05/2008 12:55

Thanks Nursejo & luvaduck

Off to see GP on monday!!

About the mirena coli - is it a similar hormone to the minipill? Im just wondering if in the long term if this might help with my PMT ??

But i am a smoker and im also over weight (size 16) would i still be able to have the mirena?

twocutedarlings · 30/05/2008 12:57

coli - PMSL

erm coil

intheskywithdiamonds · 30/05/2008 13:02

Thanks everyone! Will look into norethisterone and go and see my GP.

Luvaduck, I can't wait for Thailand- never been before. Am heading to Koh Sumai and Bangkok!

OP posts:
luvaduck · 30/05/2008 13:22

you'll love it - get a boat over to koh tao or koh phang yang (? sp) as wll if youwant it to be a bit more laid back. there is agreat spa on sumai IIRC
bangkok - nightmarket, shopping shopppign shopping
try restaurant cabbages and condoms!

twocutedarlings yes you can still have it, in fact its prob the best option as it doesn't contain oestrogen which is more of a worry with weight and smoking. yesit can help with PMT.

it releases levonorgestrel, which is a progesterone hormone found in some mini pills and some combined pills eg Eugynon, Logynon, Microgynon, Ovran 30, Ovranette and Trinordial.

most people have a bit of irregular bleeding for first 3 months and then have no periods at all(>70%)

PuppyMonkey · 30/05/2008 13:48

OOh thanks luvaduck, that cerazette sounds v.interesting.

And can I just say, I wish I was going to Thailand...

intheskywithdiamonds · 30/05/2008 13:57

Great advice luvaduck, thanks. Will keep an eye for the spa!

PuppyMonkey- I will stash you away in my bag! The one I am taking for the flight is probably big enough for everyone. Although on the way out it will be very empty and on the way home hopefully it will be full of goodies.

OP posts:
Pinkchampagne · 30/05/2008 19:34

If you want to control your periods, I wouldn't advise cerazette! I am having a nightmare with it! First few months periods went on for ever, then no period for 3 months (bonus - thought they had stopped!), then full on period when least expecting it, followed by few days break, then more bleeding, followed by another couple of days break, followed by more bleeding! (3 days before being whisked off to Rome with my DP. Luckily it stopped just in time!) Then no periods for a couple of months, followed by a similar pattern of nightmare bleeding as I had last time. I am suffering my second full on period in as many weeks atm!!
