Osteoperosis

PerkyOchrePeer · 04/08/2025 14:46

I've\n Got Osteoporosis. And I ve had it for some year, On a scan 5 years ago, my bones had improved Because\n I was taking calcium and alendronic acid. Because of the improvement, they took me off the drag. I had a scout last week and my bones have gone back to square one so I need to go back on the drug.. I was then told that because I didn't take hrt. When I went through the menopause. I have Osteoporosis, and they said that if I had taken hrt, I wouldn't have Osteoporosis now.. I did ask at the time if I should take ht and the doctor at the time said no it can cause breast cancer. I've had 2 falls recently and not broken anything, so I didn't realise that my bones were still very weak. I thought they were stronger because I should have broken bones.\n And the doctor today said you Ve just been extremely lucky, but you might not be lucky next time.. Has anybody else heard of Hrt causing osteoporosis and I honestly think the doctor at the time should have warned me about this

Osteonecrosis of the jaw is incredibly rare as a side effect of osteoporosis treatments and they do not make your teeth fall out. That was irresponsible advice as the risk of a fracture with a T score of minus 4.7 is likely to be high.

I know. It was one of the surgical team who just put a metal plate and screws in my hip. As I broke it from walking up the road and tripping.

They didn't even actually tell me the t-score. I had to chase it from a secretary months later. They didn't even mention the word 'osteoperosis'.

Really weird.

I've started back on the alendronic acid this morning. I also take thyroxine. With both drugs you have to wait 30 minutes before eating. I've decided on the day I take alendronic acid, I won't take thyroxine because then I will have to wait an hour before eating breakfast and I can't do that

Are you taking the right vitamins? eating enough dairy?

resistance bands might be a more practical way forward for you if weight lifting isn’t your thing? Your bones need the resistance.

health-line has a practical guide, it was interesting to read about calories https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/build-healthy-bones#TOC_TITLE_HDR_5 www.healthline.com/nutrition/build-healthy-bones#TOC_TITLE_HDR_5]]]]

@PerkyOchrePeerI wouldn’t skip your thyroid meds one day a week as your thyroid control may slip. I would just take them in between breakfast and lunch or another time during the day.

Sorry to hear this my Mum was diagnosed with Osteoporosis in her early a 50s and was told to go on HRT she’s now 84 and has no symptoms and the HRT seems to have protected her bone health.

I do babysitting and I'm always running after the toddler which is good exercising

The type of exercise is important if you want it to benefit your bones.
running around and dancing is great for your cardio fitness (if if gets your heart rate up sufficiently), however it does not affect your bones. Bones benefit from strength training /lifting weights. By lifting weights your muscles tighten at your bones and promote bone tissue to grow. The heavier the weight, the more tugging.

I'm not doing weights

I've researched online and it suggests dancing

PerkyOchrePeer · 05/08/2025 12:41

Yes, dancing can be beneficial for individuals with osteoporosis. It's considered a good form of weight-bearing exercise,

My mother has osteoporosis, is on medication (sorry not sure which one) and at the age of 73 was put back on HRT to give her more protection as the doctor said she hadn’t been on it long enough during menopause.
She has been told the only excise worth doing is weights, it has been proven to be the best at controlling osteoporosis and is very effective. Why will you not try it?

Chewbecca · 05/08/2025 17:22

You don't need to add the 2 30 mins together.
Please speak to a Dr or pharmacist about your medication regime.

HeyWiggle · 05/08/2025 18:13

Why don’t you like the idea of weights?

What do you mean ? I don't need to speak to a doctor. It's very simple. Alendronic Acid should be taken first thing in the morning. You have to wait 30 minutes before eating when you take it
I am also on thyroxine which should also be taken in the morning and you wait 30 minutes before eating. You should mot yake alendronic acid together with any other medication. So, take the alen̈ironic acid on its own. Wait 30 minutes and then either have food or take other medication. . In my case it's thyroxine. And you can't eat for 30 minutes after taking it or the thyroxine won't work. That's why u add the two 30 minutes together so then after an hour I can eat . However I'm not prepared to do this so only take alendronic acid and wait 30 minutes to eat. I can skip the thyroxine on that day as I've ben told it won't matter and the next day I take thyroxine again and only have to wait 30 mi uses to eat because I. Not taking alendronic acid as u only take it once a week.. taking both drugs on the same day means waiting too long to eat and I will be too hungry

Also the reason I don't want to do weights is it will give u big biceps and muscles. I don't want to become muscular. The Internet says dancing is good for osteoperosis so that's what I will do. Besides to do weights means joining a gym and I have neither the time nor the inclination for that

HRT prevents osteoporosis so is recommended for most menopausal women. It also lowers the risk of some cardiac conditions and vascular dementia. The risk of HRT causing breast cancer has been debunked.

I don’t know anything about aledronic acid but I do know that weight training is good for strengthening your bones, as is some mild impact sport such as running or jumping. Rushing around after a toddler is better than sitting on your arse but really won’t do much!

Check out Dr Vonda Wright on instagram. Loads of info about bone health in menopause.

Daisypod · 05/08/2025 20:42

Doing weights will not make you have biceps and become muscular unless you take it to an extreme also you can get small ones you can easily use at home. My mum has been doing it for months and is certainly not muscular but definitely stronger and feels much better for it.
You seem to have made up your mind about what you want to do and are happy to ignore advice of others who have good information so I’m not sure why you have bothered to ask for advice if you don’t want to at least think about it

WarriorN · 05/08/2025 20:45

Skipping and jumping has been shown to be helpful - plyometrics

even better alongside some resistance training. Dead lifts etc

I think you would benefit from a conversation with your GP as you seem to gave some unusual ideas about your health.
lifting weights will NOT make you muscular unless you build up your very heave weights!!

I agree with @Daisypod… you’ve clearly made your mind up what you’re going to do so why ask for advice?

Please listen to this 71 year old…

A decade ago, I was diagnosed with osteopenia. I was prescribed a bisphosphonate and told to ‘exercise’ - that’s it. I did a bit of research, exercised haphazardly with various Popsugar Fitness trainers before eventually discovering Caroline Girvan.

I cannot begin to describe how working out with dumbbells has changed my physique, my strength, my entire life. I am 71 years old. I am fit and strong. I ski like a woman half my age; I teach my granddaughter to ice-skate; I can run for a bus and walk for hours.

No doubt taking alendronic acid helped, but I would not want to rely on medication alone - not least because being fit and strong feels so much better.

EDIT… forgot to mention….. I’m lean and have some lovely muscles. If you don’t want showy muscles, use 2kg dumbbells instead of 10kg….. your choice!

I actually have an appointment in just over a week with a GP to discuss osteoperosis and my situation

I have a friend who is a GP in Australia. She told me over there they give patients with osteoperosis an injection called Prolia which you have twice a year to strengthen bones. Ilooked it up and here you only have it as a last resort if other medication has failed. When j was on alendronic acid 5 years ago my bones did become stronger, so on that basis I would not qualify for the injection
