megcleary · 28/05/2008 12:22

dd has cough and runny nose temp settled 3 days ago and is due in nursery tomorrow last night at midnight she coughed a few times and then vomited up what looked like some of her 7pm bottle

my insane question is does this mean she cannot attend nursery tomorrow today she is crawling about in fairly good form took morning bottle well and some yogurt

Well I might be flamed for this, but IMO, if you are sure the reason she was sick was because she was coughing excess phlegm, and she is better from her cold by tomorrow, then yes I think it would be ok for her to go to nursery.

It would not be ok if you thought the vomiting was due to a bug, or if the temperature came back or if she was still really ill from the cold. (IMO)

megcleary · 28/05/2008 12:27

i think it was mechanical she's been pulling books off the shelves this morning and playing peek a boo with the mirror not a her nap has been longer than usual but she did have a v unsettled night

They can be very easily sick if they are all bunged up. Or even a temperature can make them vomit. A doctor once told me babies were one big huge stomach surrounded by a tiny baby and anything that went wrong manifested itself through the stomach iyswim.

Pinkjenny · 28/05/2008 12:33

I am sometimes slightly hysterical, but my rule of thumb is that if she isn't sick for a 12 hour period, she can go to nursery, but only if otherwise she is fine, i.e. no temp, playing and eating normally.

Dd has been a little bit sick in the past with cough and runny nose, when she has had a lot of mucus (sp?) to deal with.

megcleary · 28/05/2008 12:35

her temp today was 37.9 is and her runny nose is running clear now i know i shouldn't care but i only start back from mat leave last week and was hoping not to have to need time off already she does come first though am new to this parenting malarky

My Dr friend said that if DD is cheerful, smiling and running around (not literally given the not walking yet) then not to worry. It could be phlegm or she just could have eaten too much or anything... I would probably send her into nursery.

DumbledoresGirl · 28/05/2008 12:40

Temperature is a bit high....

Sorry.....

megcleary · 28/05/2008 12:41

I wouldn't be happy til that temp had come down a bit tbh.

megcleary · 28/05/2008 12:48

this is what i was going on for temp range have i got this wrong too?

Normal body temperatures in a well child can range from 97.7 degrees F / 36.5 degrees C to 100 degrees F / 37.8 degrees C. Babies have higher temperatures than older children, and everyone's temperature tends to go up during the day and down after midnight. In general, a baby isn't considered feverish unless her temperature is over 100 degrees F / 37.7 degrees C in the morning or over 101 degrees F / 38.2 degrees C in the evening.

I was told by a GP not to rely on the thermometer, but whether your child feels unusually hot to you. He said, if the baby feels hot to you, it has a fever. 37.8 would be a fever in my dd as she is generally a very cool baby.

Having said that, dd winces when she sees me coming towards her with the thermometer. Ha ha.

DumbledoresGirl · 28/05/2008 12:53

Well tbh Megcleary, I think you answered that for yourself. You said her temp today was 37.9 and your guidance says a baby is feverish if the temp is higher than 37.7 in the morning.

It is a bit borderline and only you can see how your dd is behaving.

megcleary · 28/05/2008 13:05

she is just up from extra long nap and now green gunge in the corner of each eye!

Pinkjenny · 28/05/2008 13:09

Aah, bless her, dd also has this when she has a heavy cold. Maybe you could just nip her to the GP to put your mind at rest - you're obviously worried.

Although TBH, they won't give her anything for a cold anyway. The only advice I would give, is when dd has been a little under the weather and I have sent her to nursery, I have ended up leaving work and going to get her, as I was worrying and being completely unproductive anyway.

Having said that, in the nursery dd goes to, they all seem to perpetually have runny noses!

Pinkjenny · 28/05/2008 13:09

Why do I keep saying 'having said that'.

megcleary · 28/05/2008 13:12

OP posts:
Pinkjenny · 28/05/2008 16:11

Its hard to say really, you need to try and trust your instinct, I'm pretty sure the doctor wouldn't be able to give you anything. Dehydration manifests itself as pale and listless babies.

If you are really worried, ring NHS Direct for some advice.

megcleary · 28/05/2008 16:17
