Photo, peeling hands and feet. Any ideas?

The skin all over my hands peels away in patches. In the past I have had pompholyx but I wouldn’t say this is the same. It’s like the after of pompholyx without the initial itchy blisters.

It’s very ugly and unkempt looking! I avoid soaps, washing up liquid etc. I’m also avoiding hand cream in case that’s the issue.

It’s the same on my feet.

Any ideas to resolve it?

I get this on one foot regularly. I have no idea why or it what it is, sorry. I use athletes foot cream on it, even though it doesn't strike me as fungal (totally dry), but it does seem to help.

blobby10 · 24/07/2025 13:32

I get the same and put it down to peri - everything else seems to be linked to bloody peri menopause so why not this too!!

The peeling on my feet is always in the arch and starts with incredibly itchy tiny but hard blisters which I pop to relieve the itching but then the peeling starts. I've tried anti fungal cream and also antibiotic cream but it doesn't make any difference. My hands are never quite as itchy, no blisters just the peeling however moisturised they are. Then it goes away and doesn't come back for a few months!
Would love to hear if anyone has a solution that works.

myplace · 24/07/2025 13:58

Blobby, the arch is where I have furiously intense itching, but no blisters. If you have tiny liquid filled blisters it’s likely to be dishydrotic eczema, or pompholyx.

Blooming menopause. Source of all evils except the delightful absence of bleeds!

Perhaps it will resolve itself with time, then. But yes. Any cure would be welcome!

I’m wondering if it’s palmer plantar pustulosis.
I had it on my palms and soles of my feet. A constant round of itchy little fluid filled blisters and peeling skin, almost coming off in sheets.
I finally went to a Derm after trying everything else. He diagnosed within 2 mins and prescribed Methotrexate. It worked within a week but side effects were horrid

myplace · 24/07/2025 21:34

That’s a new one to look up, thanks! I don’t get the blisters anymore though- just the peeling.

myplace · 24/07/2025 21:39

Ah ok, dr google says that condition has pustules, whereas dishydrotic eczema is vesicles. I’d say it was vesicles, and now not even those.

Possibly going off on a tangent, but it reminds me of my hands when I'd been bleaching DD's hair and hadn't realised the gloves had split. Do you or anybody else in the house use peroxide or Vanish?

minmooch · 25/07/2025 08:01

Look up pompholyx eczema. I have this on my hands and feet. Gets worse in the heat.

NotHooray · 25/07/2025 08:12

The small circles on the underside of your fingers look very much like my pompholyx (dishydrotic eczema) when it flares up. I lightly apply hydrocortisone cream when it happens for a few days and that generally clears it up (until the next time). Bloody annoying though

TMMC1 · 26/07/2025 12:25

Try Syrian Aleppo soap. It’s cured my skin issues.

DinoLil · 26/07/2025 12:32

I get this on my hands and feet, too. I didn't know it was a 'thing'. I'm 53 so probably peri related as well, grrrrr.

Twilightstarbright · 26/07/2025 15:32

I have both pompholyx/dishydrotic eczema and palmoplantar pustular psoriasis (lucky me) and this looks like pompholyx to me.

elfendom1 · 27/07/2025 01:26

I don't want to worry you OP and yet I might, but an alternative explanation to eczema. The circulation in your hands doesn't look great and your nail beds are missing the typical half-moon, that might be just you, but the overall colour at the nail bed and finger tip, you might look at getting some bloodwork done. You could be anaemic for example, sometimes dry skin is an after effect of poor circulation or poor venous back flow.

blobby10 · 27/07/2025 15:29

@elfendom1 that's interesting as my half moons have gone too! I've only just noticed - is it something that happens with age anyway? I don't think I'm anaemic anymore but am giving blood in a few days so that will tell me!

ohfourfoxache · 27/07/2025 15:34

DH has had this very recently, on his feet then hands….I’d wondered if it was the after effects of a recent bout of Covid?

VeryStressedMum · 27/07/2025 16:05

Dh had this in his feet, sometimes it looks fine other times it looks worse. He gets on his hands too if he uses a different soap. I've no idea what it is so following with interest

myplace · 24/08/2025 14:36

@elfendom1 I missed your post, sorry. I am due bloods- under active thyroid etc. I’ll mention it at my annual check soon. I’m not in the best health so it’s probably just that- fibromyalgia, menopause, under active thyroid… just generally a bit creaky really!

Hand foot and mouth? Are you in contact with small humans at all??

No, and it’s constant. It’s looking almost clear at the moment, I’m trying to work out what I have and haven’t been doing. I’ll be seeing the nurse soon, so she may have ideas.

@myplace mine has cleared up too - it seems as though it peels only to a certain point then just recovers! I sometimes wonder if I was a snake in a former life and am just shedding skin Grin

Shitpeas · 29/08/2025 21:41

I get this too, usually my hands and feet at the same time. No blisters, and its not itchy, I just shed a load of skin like a snake 🐍

Bobbybobbins · 29/08/2025 21:51

My dad had this in his 50s after a very stressful time - GP said it was a form of eczema. He had to wear socks/gloves in bed for a while with really strong moisturiser.

Aparecium · 29/08/2025 21:51

My mum used to get this on just one foot. Turned out that it was a reaction to nightshade foods (tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, aubergines). Unfortunately, all veg she loved and ate regularly. She cut them out for several months, before gradually reintroducing them. We had several years of mum going through phases of avoiding and reintroducing. Eventually mum seemed to no longer have any problem with those veg, around about the time she was having steroid injections for Mortons neuroma. Coincidence?

Wigeon · 01/09/2025 17:53

I've had this a couple of times, just seems to have gone away recently without me doing anything different (eg I haven't changed my washing powder or any toiletries). A mystery but because it was only slight itchy sometimes I didn't think it was worth bothering the GP.

myplace · 12/09/2025 17:15

The arch of one foot is fiendishly itchy. I’ve given in a few times and had a good rub at it with my other foot 🤣. So there’s pain on the horizon when it flares up in response. Sigh.
