Covid - new strain

deeahgwitch · 04/07/2025 15:07

Has anyone had the new strain of COVID?
Does it always come with a cough and sore throat ?

OP posts:
MassiveOvaryaction · 04/07/2025 15:20

I haven't had the new strain afaik, but having had confirmed covid numerous times (and subsequent diagnosis of long covid) can confirm you don't always get a cough. Literally only had a cough for a couple of days total.

unsurewhattodoaboutit · 04/07/2025 15:33

Yep had this end of may and still suffering with cough and intermittent sore throats.

Coffeeishot · 04/07/2025 15:35

I haven't tested but I've definitely had covid im just at the end of it now, I don't know if it is a new strain, but I have had a really sore throat and just feel rotten.

Coffeeishot · 04/07/2025 15:37

Sorry yes it comes with a cough and sore throat, regardless of strain.

Thedoorisalwaysopen · 04/07/2025 15:56

Wouldn't know because I don't test. Never have and never will.

Dangermouse999 · 04/07/2025 15:58

DS had it last week. Mainly a cough, bit of sore throat and quite fatigued. He was over it after only 4-5 days though.

Those youngsters just spring back don't they 😀

DH had it first he is fine now after 2/3 weeks and I've a lingering cough which is doing my head in.

FloofyBird · 04/07/2025 17:58

How do you know what strain it is?

DemonsandMosquitoes · 04/07/2025 18:29

Yes. Tested positive recently. Really sore throat, temp, aches etc. Took a week to get over.

anyzen · 04/07/2025 18:32

Is there much point in testing anymore? I just consider it a cough, sore throat and a bad cold now. Is there some reason/advantage to testing?

Bagzzz · 04/07/2025 18:37

I have a vulnerable relative. For some reason the NHS has she gets a specific treatment before any symptoms if she gets Covid (maybe because there is tested for that and not flu?). So if I test if I’ve been with her.

You can test for flu easily too - Boots etc sell flu rapid tests as well as covid ones.

Hope you feel better soon OP. Symptoms vary between people - from conjunctivitis, rashes, confusion to vomiting, coughing and fever. Others won’t have any symptoms at all in the acute phase. Some will have completely different symptoms each infection. It’s a strange beast.

caringcarer · 04/07/2025 20:46

I had it for almost 3 weeks in June. Exhausted, couldn't stop coughing, high temperature, sleeping a lot, sore throat and runny nose. I took ages to shake it off.

Leaningcactus · 04/07/2025 20:48

Mine didn't. Dh and I and several work colleagues had it two weeks ago. Temperature, headache and really runny nose. No sore throat.

IncessantNameChanger · 04/07/2025 20:50

I'm pretty sure I have covid again going on past symptoms. Not a sore throat but dry and tickle. Coughing up gunk but my chest feels clear.

Arran2024 · 04/07/2025 20:59

I think i had it but I didn't test. I was so exhausted. No sore throat but a bit of a cough. I went to a salt cave for a session and it went!

Leaningcactus · 04/07/2025 21:12

You can order a test for next day delivery on Amazon. One thing I would say, it was very contagious. It very quickly spread at DH's work, then through us all at home.

Coffeeishot · 05/07/2025 08:27

Sometimes people test for work or maybe visiting or have vulnerable people in the house., i can see why people want to test, I read that, there is an antigen test for flu now which is useful.

ScratCat · 05/07/2025 08:30

Why test? What difference does it make if it’s covid, a cold or a chest infection?

I’d presume if people had concerns about spreading an infection, they’d behave in exactly the same way regardless.

MrsSkylerWhite · 05/07/2025 08:30

Yes, husband had severe sore throat. I was just very weak for several days.

Because covid can affect people differently to say a cold, a coronavirus isnt a cold, my stepfather has an autoimmune condition and needs antivirals if he has covid as covid could kill him, so I've stayed away from my parents if I had to go i probably would do a test, this is why some people choose to test themselves.

Strongcuppaplease · 05/07/2025 13:53

Why is there so often a “why do you test” comment whenever someone mentions covid? There are numerous reasons and people don’t need to justify them. Oh, and thank you to those who do test and modify their actions as a result.

ScratCat · 05/07/2025 13:58

I don’t know anyone in RL that tests, or even talks about covid, apart from on here. 🤷‍♀️

Strongcuppaplease · 05/07/2025 14:15

You think everybody you know irl would be saying, I’ve just done a covid test, let me inform scratcat? You think shops would be selling them if no one was buying them? You can’t conceive of a single reason why someone would do a test? I wonder how much more misery would be caused if everybody stopped testing - from job losses to childrens health to complications in pregnancy etc.

You do, but people are loathe to mention it because they immediately get jumped on by idiots telling them that it’s ridiculous to test.

We test because our DD (previously fit, extremely healthy, very slim) was hospitalised with Covid during the pandemic. The virus attacked her heart. Now she has long covid and has needed heart monitoring when she’s subsequently contracted Covid. So we test so that we know to be vigilant and seek medical advice asap if needed.

Also my DM has just had a pre-op for a big surgery and has been told that if she gets Covid between now and the op, they won’t be able to do it because of the increased risk of blood clots. So even if she’s had bad hayfever she’s been testing to make sure that it isn’t Covid.

There are thousands of legitimate reasons why people may still test, none of which affect the large number of very vocal Covid deniers, so why don’t they all just stfu and keep their noses out? If someone doesn’t want to test, that’s fine. If someone does want to test, that’s also fine.
