Covid - new strain

deeahgwitch · 04/07/2025 15:07

Has anyone had the new strain of COVID?
Does it always come with a cough and sore throat ?

OP posts:
Iloveeverycat · 05/07/2025 14:32

My DH has it at the moment no sore throat but bad cough, headache, aching body, shivering, sweating and very tired.

Thedoorisalwaysopen · 04/07/2025 15:56

Wouldn't know because I don't test. Never have and never will.

Why bother answering then

Is there much point in testing anymore? I just consider it a cough, sore throat and a bad cold now. Is there some reason/advantage to testing?

Yes, when you have elderly parents with breathing problems that you don't want to make worse.

You can order a test for next day delivery on Amazon. One thing I would say, it was very contagious. It very quickly spread at DH's work, then through us all at home.

I have found last two times I tested ( because I was sure it was covid or flu) it's not been positive until 5 days into symptoms. Are the new tests faster? I was wanting to test as meeting friend who's dh is at the beginning of his cancer journey. We just sat outside ar apart instead when the test was negative. In situations like that I'd test. But at the same time if I felt unwell I'd just just not risk it. But two weeks feeling exhausted with a cough that's not cleared up I could have done with knowing for sure on the days I did feel like crap.

If I had elderly parents with breathing problems, I’d expect they’d be cautious about limiting their contact with infections or viruses. The fact it might be Covid is no different to anything else that might compromise them.

Oh covid can attack the nervous system the heart cause respiratory difficulties, the list goes on most people now are cautious and covid aware apart from the people who think "it's just a cold" !

You do, but people are loathe to mention it because they immediately get jumped on by idiots telling them that it’s ridiculous to test.

We test because our DD (previously fit, extremely healthy, very slim) was hospitalised with Covid during the pandemic. The virus attacked her heart. Now she has long covid and has needed heart monitoring when she’s subsequently contracted Covid. So we test so that we know to be vigilant and seek medical advice asap if needed.

Also my DM has just had a pre-op for a big surgery and has been told that if she gets Covid between now and the op, they won’t be able to do it because of the increased risk of blood clots. So even if she’s had bad hayfever she’s been testing to make sure that it isn’t Covid.

There are thousands of legitimate reasons why people may still test, none of which affect the large number of very vocal Covid deniers, so why don’t they all just stfu and keep their noses out? If someone doesn’t want to test, that’s fine. If someone does want to test, that’s also fine.

Agreed
It's so boring when they just jump on a covid thread to put people for testing
Just sod off and do you

Retrouvailles · 05/07/2025 21:06

Yup, just getting over covid now and yes I did test as someone close to us is going thru cancer treatment.

I'm long past a positive test now but still constantly exhausted, still very little appetite, not too keen on tea and I usually drink more than several cups a day, and my nose won't stop dripping - oh joy, when will that stop?

FairViewRosie25 · 05/07/2025 21:59

I have had COVID 5 times. The last bout left me with high blood pressure, lipodema and long covid it is definitely real

alexalisten · 05/07/2025 22:02

I had covid recently and the sore throat was my first symptom I didn't get a cough

Dearover · 05/07/2025 22:55

Fairly sure we're still recovering from the stratus variant 3 weeks on. DH has the hoarse voice, I have the annoying persistent cough. He was wiped out & I had an upset tummy & a very weird snotty nose when we were on holiday.. Ruined our break, but at least we were in a cottage and could wallow. Neither of us tested positive, but I never have, although DH usually does.

September20233 · 07/07/2025 13:51

I had covid 5 times , but whatever virus i have now its the worst. Starting on Thursday with dry blocked nose, Saturday/Sunday i started with horrible muscle ache, i mean my legs and back hurt every when i am not moving, i can't even describe it. Hot burning face, body and high temperature, slight sore throat .

Jamesblonde2 · 07/07/2025 14:00

It will become an excuse again for people not to go to work. In case they catch it and pass onto a vulnerable relative. Causes all manner of problems with HR when the government don’t issue a policy, and one must be issued internally at work.

Thedoorisalwaysopen · 04/07/2025 15:56

Exactly this. How would anyone know, because we obviously don't test. There are always bugs and viruses going around, so we just accept it, have a day or two off work if feeling rough, and then forget it. Who can really be bothered to stress about Covid all over again?

Jamesblonde2 · 07/07/2025 14:01

The thing is as well, once you have it, and might not realise as symptoms not showing, have you already passed it on to those you have been in contact with? If you’re worried just get the jab.

September20233 · 07/07/2025 14:04

But jabs aren't even working so no point

QueMaTeteFleurisse · 18/07/2025 10:00

Can’t people read?
some people are vulnerable and if they test positive (free tests for this group) they get antivirals to fight it.
That stops them ending up in hospital which helps everyone.
Also antivirals stop the virus lingering in immunosuppressed people so new strains are less likely to evolve.
Not hard to understand.

Of course the immunocompromised will continue to test. But at this point is anyone really testing? It’s been 5 years

Yes, as above. Immunocompromised people are really testing.
We are people.
So people are really testing.

DoubleShotEspresso · 18/07/2025 10:09

I have “something” at the moment, horrific cough and headache and I have the shakes/really high temperature but get the shivers. It’s horrid.
Do test kits pick up this new strain?

Yes, they do

Strongcuppaplease · 18/07/2025 10:17

I’m going to see if I can find the thread of where people say why they test for those who seem so bewildered by it. Incidentally, flu has been around alot longer than five years and people test for that too!

UpsideDownChairs · 18/07/2025 10:18

All 3 of us went down with sore throat and totally bunged up a week after travelling. Middle child just had the sore throat, me and the youngest are still coughing a bit, but no-longer congested (lasted about 4 days).

I tested after a few days (just out of curiosity really - they had some tests at the checkout so I bought a box) and it came up instant covid, so I assume that's what it was.

It was nothing like when I had covid a couple of years ago - I really would have described it just as a head-cold level of inconvenience.

Are you suggesting immunocompromised people are not, um, people? Hmm
