Self administered B12 injection

DP is really suffering fatigue and low energy. I’m working on improving his diet but in the shorter term he’s looking at B12 injections.

because he previously had weight loss surgery his GP won’t help him but blood tests did show he’s low in B12

does anyone order their own online and would recommend ?

I've been Self Injecting for years as GP would only allow me 12 weekly. I also get mine from Amazon Germany. If they don't have them there are other German sellers that ship to the UK.

Yes they sting but for a short time but the benefits are very well worth it. Good Luck

Can’t he just take oral B12 supplements? Would save you stress/hassle! Injections are really only necessary with pernicious anaemia (when the body physically cannot absorb B12).

B12 are given to those with a positive intrinsic factor ( meaning they can’t absorb naturally via the stomach ) and those who have has gastric bypass or sleeve. It’s given to others also with other conditions.
your Gp should be giving these injections every 12 weeks if the above apply.

I know. My own DD is on them for life due to PA.

Because of his previous weight loss treatment his GP won’t help. They say any side effects of his surgery he needs to speak to his surgeon about. We are pushing back on this but meanwhile, this is the path we are on.

he has difficulty absorbing things orally again due to the gastric surgery.

@annelovesgilbertcan I ask where you order from and did you need specific needles etc?

please PM if you don’t want to discuss on here

much appreciated

I’ve had a bypass and I use vitajab. It’s £29.50 every 12 weeks. You go to a local chemist and they do it there.

Go and make an appointment with the dietician at the hospital attached to the bariatric unit; he should be getting follow-up appointments for several years. If he has been discharged from bariatric to the GP, then they should deal with it. B12 is a known need after bariatric surgery (bypass). Dont let the GP fob you off

MeetTheGrahams · 27/06/2025 20:31

PS I get one every 2 weeks via the GP

Pomer0l · 27/06/2025 20:35

@dancemom
I can’t understand GP not getting involved. We give them routinely at our GP practice for patients following weight loss surgery. They will be for life.

TiredAH · 27/06/2025 20:37

Why is the gp not helping?
regardless of where you had the procedure, nhs offers 3,6,12month bloods (annually thereafter) and b12 injections.
i get prescribed vitd, b12, calcium and gastric protection. Only multivitamins are not prescribed.

Look for cyanocobalamin supplements while you change gps, or find something like a aesthetics nurse who administers this injection

user1471453601 · 27/06/2025 21:01

@dancemom I have pernicious anaemia so I cannot absorb B12 through my gut, and I have 12 weekly injections.

Inbetween, when I'm feeling low, I use a B 12 spray inside my cheeks. It doesn't taste nice (saccharine type of taste) but it kind of works. I think it's called Boost. My adult child got it for me from Amazon.

Maybe they could try that?

Maverick66 · 27/06/2025 21:20

I have pernicious anaemia ....which causes B12 deficiency. I get injection every 8 weeks.
The exhaustion when my injection is due is overwhelming as is the brain fog .
I would Pursue the issue with your dr.

Also check his iron levels ...my folate levels are quite often low which is linked to B12 and .I take folic acid for this .I find folic acid is very beneficial.

OnTheBoardwalk · 27/06/2025 22:02

a B 12 spray inside my cheeks - i'm interested in this thanks I’ll have a look

those who say the injection hurts, things they don’t tell you! Keep it warm, I left mine in the car overnight at first, put the injection in slow and make them change the needle after clattering the vial.

I had locum dr who they had drug injections in his last week who tried to jab me with the original needle

Pushkin123 · 27/06/2025 22:11

Hi, the BOMSS website offers guidance on routine vitamin and mineral supplementation post bariatric surgery. It depends what type of surgery he has had but many require vitb12 injections routinely even if levels are normal. Vitb12 deficiency can develop some time after surgery.
it’s really important to take a daily multivitamin also.
hope this link helps - maybe worth discussing with GP.

aniloD · 27/06/2025 22:46

I had bariatric surgery (privately) way back in 2000, so 25 years ago. A few years laterGP contacted me and said I should have b12 injections every 12 weeks. I did this for about 10 years. Since then (15 years) I have been buying and self injecting monthly. I buy from Germany (versandapo) with needles and syringes from Amazon)

TheBigFatMermaid · 27/06/2025 22:53

This is ridiculous!

I had weight loss surgery (gastric by-pass) and I get b12 injections every 3 months and daily vitamins and calcium tablets to take.

According to this logic, DP, who had a heart attack and stent fitted at the hospital shouldn't get his heart meds prescribed by the GP!

dancemom · 28/06/2025 11:03

His weight loss surgery was done privately abroad which is why the GP is taking this stance.

thank you everyone for your input so far it’s much appreciated

Local dispensing pharmacies do it for around £35. I have one twice a year. It makes a massive difference to my mood and energy levels.

AnnoyedAsAllHeck · 28/06/2025 20:56

I have used this but not sure if it's available in the UK.

Vitamin B12 Cream Methyl B-12, Methylcobalamin B12 1000 mcg Energy, Health & Vibrant Skin, Powerful Topical B12 Skin Cream.

It worked as well as an injection for me and was less "ouchy". 😊

RicardoOrchard · 28/06/2025 21:06

I buy mine from a seller on Etsy and inject every 2 months. I hate doing it but I feel so much better afterwards.

I went and read the reviews for the above and I think the quality has gone down. I used it when I had Bell's Palsy (I recovered really fast, but I did also get one injection).

Now I would no longer recommend it.

Missingpop · 29/06/2025 17:27

Because he’s had weight loss surgery he should be on B12 jabs for the rest of his life I had it in 2013 & I give myself jabs every three months via my GP surgery they’re free too x
Het back in touch with the GP surgery & speak to them I am 100% certain it’s part of the agreement when you have surgery private or nhs your on them for life xx good luck I feel his pain as I also have fibromyalgia it’s a effort everyday to even open your eyes xx

Don't you find they burn like a mf?

I did have a course and it was done in a clinic, but I had a bit of a walk to the car after. Although she injects into the butt, my whole leg went lame for a while after.

I just don't think I could inject myself with one of these. And I don't think I am too much of a woosy most of the time 😀

I did feel great after a day or two though.

Why is she doing it in your butt?

we usually give it in the deltoid muscle

Drawing up should always be a filter needle - if they’re using the same needle to draw up and administer then that’s dangerous and very poor practice
