Bottom pain

Hi - i'm getting some weird pain/discomfort in my bottom that I can't quite place and DrGoogle isn't helping. It started a couple of months ago - it felt almost like pressure in my back passage, worse before needing to go, but then irritated afterwards. Also discomfort around my tailbone area. I almost can't really pin point it - FIT test was negative but no real bowel issues anyway. Steroid suppositories did nothing so I don't think it's internal haemorrhoids. A bit of nausea but perimenopausal so that's been going on for a while - just waves for a minute or two a few times a day, so nothing to pin point. Anyone had anything like this? It's sort of pressure, sort of numb/tingly, somewhere deep but near tailbone.

I've also had this and have no idea what it is. Similar to you, tests have come back negative. It stays for a few weeks then goes away again. No advice to give as I'm in the same boat but bumping and hopefully someone more knowledgeable will comment.

missboots · 26/05/2025 11:43

Thanks for replying @Boeufsurletoit - sorry to hear you have similar! I sometimes think it might be more muscular/trapped nervy. But could that affect how bowel movements feel?

Op I am sat in doctors waiting room with the same/similar thing.

tailbone area pressure

sometimes aching pain , sometimes burning pain

sometimes a dull painless feeling of pressure like I need a poo (when I don’t)

had it for a month

mine is pretty much constant

will let you know the outcome of my appt!

ps I have a history of pelvic organ prolapse post childbirth and a tilted uterus which I will mention but may not be relevant.

Pompompurin1 · 26/05/2025 13:06

I saw a very young male doctor and he said that due to my age (39) and the fact that there aren’t any other red flags (unusual bowel movements, blood, et cetera) he wasn’t overly concerned that anything sinister but he did want to start with a rectal examination and a pelvic examination. I said I would prefer this to be with a female doctor so I’m going back on Wednesday. Funnily enough, he didn’t seem to think it was originating in my spine. He seemed quite interested in my pelvic prolapse history from 4 to 5 years ago…. I will update!

missboots · 26/05/2025 13:12

Oh wow thanks @Pompompurin1 - all sounds quite similar! I did a fit test which was negative, and GP checked my tummy and did a rectal exam as well - all normal and no red flags. I am now getting a bit of lose bowels but i think I'm just quite anxious about it. All very non specific!

Hoping my rectal exam is normal too. Part of me wishes I had just gone ahead and let the male doctor do it but I was kind of on the spot… I wasn’t expecting that for some reason… Taken off guard… So said “oh please can I come back and have a woman do it.” Anyway, I only have to wait until the Wednesday. It’s all very odd, isn’t it. I have noticed that sitting slightly side on alleviates matters but sitting square on my bottom exacerbates it. The doctor seemed a lot more interested in pelvic/rectal issues than anything to do with my spine / coccyx.

SorrowsPrayers · 26/05/2025 13:48

Look up "javelin arse". Sounds similar "

dynamiccactus · 26/05/2025 18:11

My DH has had this. It lasted about 3 months and then went away. Also not really sure what causes it. He has had it twice. It's not really Javelin Arse, that's wind in your back passage and isn't the same as this.

missboots · 26/05/2025 20:28

That's interesting @dynamiccactus - for some reason I have this down as a woman's thing. It's definitely not javelin arse - I know what that feels like and I do get it with wind occasionally. I'm sort of hoping it's all just peri etc. Mind you, my nausea is really ramping up at the moment and I think I have a low grade fever - feeling very warm! Feel like I'm falling apart slightly!

Did your husbands pain involve a feeling of pressure a bit like need a poo, @dynamiccactus ?

im sick of it tonight. Absolutely fed up.

depending on what happens on Wed, I may go and see a chiropractor later in the week. Just to see if they have a different angle/ can marginally rub anything !

ScaryM0nster · 26/05/2025 21:53

Probably not - but worth having a read on pilonidal sinus.

Also rectocele.

Pompompurin1 · 26/05/2025 22:21

I have a history of rectocele ! (4 years ago after 2x horrendous childbirths). It did not cause coccyx pain or feeling of bowel pressure though. Just a collapsed areabetween rectum and vagina (posterior vaginal wall) that made of difficult to empty bowels

RentalWoesNotFun · 27/05/2025 00:08

What happens if you up your water, fruit and veg til your stool is pretty soft, does it get any less uncomfortable?

dynamiccactus · 27/05/2025 16:43

With my DH he was fine until after he'd been to the loo and then it really hurt for about 45 minutes around his tailbone area. It wasn't any other time, so maybe not the same thing but the same as in an annoying unexplained thing!

He did see a consultant the first time and they did a colonoscopy etc and found nothing.

Isn't pilonidal sinus visible when you look at the skin?

I have done a lot of googling recently as I have had loads of symptoms too - erratic bowels, bleeding and a full feeling in the rectum and most annoying, runners' trots when I've never had them. But I had a clear colonoscopy too. I am close to putting mine down to midlife hormones and piles! I've had various other things like coeliac ruled out too.

When you google IBS type symptoms it says that you don't get it over 50 and it's ovarian cancer. When you google IBS and menopause, you get loads of hits telling you hormones affect the bowels.

Don't know what DH's trouble is/was.

Allenabc · 27/05/2025 20:58

I too have exactly the same thing. Driving me mad, it’s been 4 months now. My GP has referred me to MSK but they have emailed to say no appointments available until Sept. I have had physio but she couldn’t work out what is causing it and also an osteopath take a look but also no idea. I have been to a private GP, he thought it maybe a fissure, gave me some cream but so far no help. Think an mri or a scan may show some light. I have bought a special cushion for coccyx pain, it helps when sitting down. It’s affecting my everyday life now

Pompompurin1 · 28/05/2025 11:08

I’m waiting at GP surgery again right now, to see female GP for internal examinations. I’ve had a horrendous morning. Can barely sit down.

keeponplodding7 · 28/05/2025 11:26

I have exactly this for the last month. Thought it was a Hemorrhoid as I do have one but nothing is helping. I’ve had a doc check me and she said I have one prolapsed Hemorrhoid but I’m not sure whether to go back as basically it hurts to sit always - and it’s really annoying me now. I have this pressure feeling and feel like I’m sitting on a ball. Worse when I think about it. Wondering if it could be pelvic floor related? Let us know what the doc says!

Pompompurin1 · 28/05/2025 11:42

Bit of a prolapse on the back wall of the vagina causing pressure on bowels. Referred to specialist physio. Could be putting a strain on lower back too. Bum itself seemed normal. Spine seemed tender on palpation of coccyx area. So basically a referall to physio for me!

postop · 28/05/2025 11:42

I had awful coccyx pain for a couple of years. Couldn't sit without special cushion. Fobbed off by doctors.
Suffered from occasional constipation.
Then, on holiday, a large thrombosed haemorrhoid prolapsed. The pain was extreme. I tried every product I could buy but nothing helped.
I went to hospital and had surgery the same day. The surgeon removed the prolapsed one and two further huge intermal thrombosed haemorrhoids. He said they were the worst he had ever seen.
The coccyx pain disappeared by the time I had recovered from the surgery.
I am glad it happened in a country with excellent health care and my travel insurance covered it. I have no doubt the nhs would have continued to fob me off.

Pompompurin1 · 28/05/2025 11:44

Bloody hell @postop . Wonder if that would be picked up in a rectal exam (I’ve just had the GPs finger up my bum). It was v quick though, took about 1 second.

postop · 28/05/2025 12:04

The surgeon didn't find the other two until the surgery (he was removing the prolapsed one anyway). He did a colonoscopy at the same time to have a proper look due to me being over 60. (He was delighted to tell me how awful and huge they were. Photographs were included in the post op notes ). I was a bit worried that he had removed 2 more but it was the best thing im the end. I was mortified to tell the young man on the insurance claim line about my bottom. The surgeon was so kind. I would never have been able to travel home without the surgery

keeponplodding7 · 28/05/2025 12:06

Glad you have a plan! I am not sure that can be causing my issues as the gp would have felt it I’m assuming? I think I’ll go back to gp next week x

Pompompurin1 · 28/05/2025 12:13

@keeponplodding7 did your GP do a vaginal exam? That’s when she saw my “sagging”. She did the bum exam first and said “all normal!”

keeponplodding7 · 28/05/2025 13:32

No she didn’t…..ok that’s worth checking too thank
you

missboots · 02/06/2025 20:46

Weirdly all my issues have disappeared overnight! Other than the occasional random low grade temperature but I think that is something else... Hope everyone else's resolves!
