DD is 17m and has had diorreah for 10 days. Docs have tested for certain nasties Ecoli, salmonella, Rota virus all came back neg. After that the GP just kept telling me to withold milk and foods which we did already but made things worse and didn't seem to listen to what I was saying at all.

Have taken her to a specialist (private) who is doing more tests for parasites and fats and sugars in the feces. DD is loosing weight but no fever sickness and is relatively perky although she is getting worn down with it now and sleeping more.
Can anyone shed any light on what on earth this could be? I am desperate...

hope someone will be able to help on here

cholera?
it used to be a nasty nasty nasty. but not common anymore. thank god.
try giving her stuff to sooth her tummy. fennel tea has always helped my kids and myself, and mom, andsiblings. but if its been going on for ten days, it may not respond to something like that.

ds had very upset tummy when he was 3 weeks to 11 weekds old. constant tiny acidic poohs. and he was breastfed as well. it finally cleared up when i gave him some homopathic medicine from a homopathic doctor, (as opposed to something someone recommended, iyswim)
sorry, those are my only suggestions.

MrsBadger · 20/05/2008 11:18

are you in the UK?
has she or anyone in the house been abroad in the last year?
how bad's the diarrhoea?
is it green? yellow? thick? watery?

is she bf? ff?

gagarin · 20/05/2008 11:22

What about this? Sounds horrid but harmless.

When my ds had diorreah for over a week the doctor said he would have to go into hospital and have a drip put on as he was not getting enough fluid. I managed to stay with him at home and constantly gave him sips of water. I had some special salt/sugar mixture to get him to drink too and he recovered after 10 days. The tests all came back negative too.

Hope you can find out what is wrong but if your dd isn't keeping any fluid in then try the hospital as she could dehydrate.

CrushWithEyeliner · 20/05/2008 11:26

no temp just v worn down by it - doc said she has lost weight (obviously)

cryptosporidium? Giardia?

Both parastites that will be seen i the stools I think.

Hope she gets better soon.

MrsBadger · 20/05/2008 11:45

Giardia diarrhoea is usually green and very farty (I wasn't just asking for fun)

Crypto is a possibility and will show up on the test

CrushWithEyeliner · 20/05/2008 11:46

ah thank you

How are these parasites treated?

OP posts:
gagarin · 20/05/2008 11:50

Short course of antibiotic-type drugs I think. Though they can linger a while.

CrushWithEyeliner · 20/05/2008 12:02

thank youfor your advice

Unusual to pick up Giardia (or any parasite) in the UK surely?

DD got it whilst in Sardinia (filthy Mark Warner complex) when 10 months. MrsB is right is fermented, bubbly and stinky also breath can smells of faeces too.

Giardia lives higher up and does not always show in stool samples. DD ill for 3+ months and weighed less at 13 months than at 6 months. All because initial stool samples did not show so they wouldn't give her ABs.

Any severe upset tum (in adults and DC) can cause short term lactose intolerance, so actually I would hold off the milk.

MrsBadger · 20/05/2008 12:09

unusual but not unheard of, esp 17mo rolling in muddy garden etc so def worth a test

CrushWithEyeliner · 20/05/2008 12:09

this is so hard - i thought parasite was v unusual in this country.

Sounds a bit like cryptosperidium which we have had a few times.

I hope you get it sorted soon I know how worrying and stressfull it is.

cheesesarnie · 20/05/2008 12:26

i posted on your other thread about my ds who turned out to be intolerant to cows milk produce.he was fine on goats milk and soya produce.we had lots of tests-all you mentioned and was told toddler diarhoa etc for ages before we found out what was wrong.

hope you find out cause soon.and hope shes well soon

CrushWithEyeliner · 20/05/2008 12:28

thanks again this is hell - just a waiting game whilst watching her get weaker

OP posts:
MrsBadger · 20/05/2008 12:29

what's she eating / drinking?
is she staying hydrated

CrushWithEyeliner · 20/05/2008 12:30

caught her playing with soil in a corner in the hot weather could she have picked something up then?

OP posts:
cheesesarnie · 20/05/2008 12:32

i would say if she is getting weaker and your worried to take her to doctor again.i know you went on friday but if shes really getting worse take her back.its an awful worrying thing-i felt no one listened with ds.

MrsBadger · 20/05/2008 12:33

no good guessing where it came from till you know what it is - whatever you do don't start beating yourself up / stopping her going in the garden etc.
