Exclusivley breastfeeding and my period started

Toadhall44 · 10/05/2025 18:05

I am EBF and I had a bleed at 8 weeks post-partum and now like clockwork, I've started bleeding again right on time at 12 weeks.

I'm an extreme hypochondriac and just wanted to hear if this happened to anyone else?

With my first daughter - no periods for 6 months until I stopped feeding completly and now this time round, I'm bleeding.

Any reassurence appeciated!

Exact same thing happened to me. No periods for 8 months postpartum the first time, and they returned 8 weeks postpartum the second time.

elusiveemz · 10/05/2025 18:42

My periods returned at 6 weeks like clockwork and I ebf all my children. Fed all of them for 3+ years.

I felt robbed 😪

crumblingschools · 10/05/2025 18:45

My period started within 2 months of giving birth even though EBF. I also had ‘periods’ for first 5 months of pregnancy. I felt very cheated!

This exactly for me too. Literally the one perk I was looking forward to.

I had my daughter December 22 and my periods started again at about 6 weeks post partum and have been regular pretty much since and I was exclusively breastfeeding and expressing extra so I had it on hand just in case!

Me too & I was VERY disappointed each time!

me24x · 10/05/2025 22:03

Me too! I ebf my daughter and my period returned at 6weeks pp. I thought initially it would impact my milk but it didn’t, was just a pain!

Watto1 · 10/05/2025 22:05

yes, me too! Period started 7 weeks after giving birth and exclusively breastfeeding. I was gutted.

Calmdownpeople · 10/05/2025 22:08

Yea completely normal. Why would this worry you?

AnneLovesGilbert · 10/05/2025 22:12

I was mugged off too, had monster feeders both times and I just knew I’d ovulated 3.5 months after DC1 and got my period as feared/expected 2 weeks later. Didn’t see it coming at all after DC2 but went for a wee when he was 3 months and there it was. Absolute joke.

They are much better than they were before having kids, less painful, shorter, usually lighter. But I’m still feeding DS so I don’t know how they’ll be when I stop, I’ve been pregnant or feeding for 7 years so not hormonally normal.

It’s normal if annoying OP. Mum bf all 4 of us and never got longer than 6 weeks from birth to period.

TinglyandCurious · 10/05/2025 22:15

Same! Both times round.. like clockwork back at 8 weeks. I was definitely ovulating by month 5 too despite exclusively breastfeeding.

Picklechicken · 10/05/2025 22:16

This can be completely normal. Nothing to worry about. It’s down to the levels of prolactin people produce and that varies greatly between each woman and even between pregnancies etc.

EndlesslyDecluttering · 10/05/2025 22:20

Similar here. This is why HCPs nag you about contraception soon after you've given birth!

RandomMess · 10/05/2025 22:22

Yep mine returned at 6 weeks back to regular 😭with my youngest I had a Mirena inserted 2 weeks post partum just to spared from it.

ThatsCute · 10/05/2025 22:22

Me too. I did a lot of pumping because DC struggled to latch on my right side. My Health Visitor said it was because of the pumping/not having a baby latched on.

springshadows · 10/05/2025 22:27

I ebf and my periods still returned within 6 weeks 😫 Despite me breastfeeding for 2.5years once they returned they were as regular as clockwork. I was gutted. Happened with my next dc too when I breastfed him. Oh and I didn’t pump at all .

NorthernDancer · 10/05/2025 22:29

4 weeks PP both times. Cheated!

sakura06 · 10/05/2025 22:31

I was 8 weeks post-partum with my first. EBF too.

Yep absolutely this. The amount of women that don’t seem to understand this is astounding.

Bababear987 · 10/05/2025 22:39

That's completely normal, sure why else would they warn you that you can get pregnant whilst breastfeeding?

Yes I find this quite shocking that women dont know this or believe that breastfeeding acts as contraception..... surely that old wives tale was debunked a hell of a long time ago?

Toadhall44 · 11/05/2025 05:31

Thank you everyone!

I am a hypochondriac and I am also quite sensitive to what happens to my female anatomy due to being high risk for certain cancers. And when something unexpected happens, I get a little uneasy. Even if what is happening is perfectly normal (yet annoying).

I'm not pumping and I have never believed BF to act as a contraception. I'm not ready now, or probably ever, to have another baby 😂

Yes. EBF did not suppress my periods at all. It's within the range of normal for this to happen. Annoying!

If you knew EBF doesnt act as contraception then why are you so worried about your periods returning?

Surely that's a given. You generally need to be having periods to get pregnant?

DramaAlpaca · 11/05/2025 19:03

It's normal. After DC1 mine came back at four months postpartum while I was exclusively breastfeeding, and I conceived DC2 at seven months postpartum, while still breastfeeding a lot. Good job I wanted to have them close together!
