14 months. some diaorhea (sp?) on thurs. vomited for the first time on thursday afternoon, his whole lunch. had some dinner, vomited most of that up. had bottle of milk before bed, kept that down and slept v well. no diaorhea yesterday, but loose poos iyswim.

yesterday tiny bit of posset in the morning, but otherwise was not sick at all all day. did not have much food, but had 2 yoghurts and some bread and most of his milk before bed. woke up at 5am had pooed (loose but not totally liquid), never usually poos at night. went back to sleep after i changed him.

this morning had breakfast yoghurt, kiwi fruit, raisins (wouldn't have toast, wouldn't have weetabix) and vomited whole lot up (vomited 6 times in total, until clear).

had some milk and plenty water. had little bit of sweet potato as lunchtime. has just sicked it up.

is well in himself, less energy than usual, but no rash, no temperature to speak of, wouldn't describe him as listless.

nhs direct have advised carrying on feeding him everything he'd usually have, and have said that they don't advise no food for 24 hours as before. cause they said i sounded worried they referred it to dr who said if he carries on being sick i should take him to walk in clinic in hospital to get 'his throat checked'.

sorry for long windedness. my instinct is to stop feeding him, either totally apart from water, or just give him milk. i really don't want to take him to a walk in, and wait for hours to see a dr who will just advise me to keep him hydrated (i am)...

this is the first time he's been ill like this (we've been very lucky)

any advice at all v v welcome...please?

x

blackcurrant flave?

Sponge · 16/01/2005 16:43

Have tried lemon and blackcurrant.
He spat both out.
Have just managed to get about 5ml into him via medicine syringe but he wasn't keen.

Heathcliffscathy · 16/01/2005 16:46

ds seems as if maybe he is on the mend. hasn't puked since about 10am this morning, and has managed to keep pear and mushed carrot down...fingers crossed, thanks everyone for great advice

I think for diarrhoea there's something called the BRAT diet ie bananas, rice, stewed apples and toast. Did this when ds had the trots last summer & it did work.

weightwatchingwaterwitch · 16/01/2005 18:14

Have you tried giving ice cubes if they won't drink? Or ice lollies?

Heathcliffscathy · 16/01/2005 18:43

ooo bettys that sounds good. i'll try that as of tomorrow...he's in bath with his dad, and a bottle of diaorylyte (sp) that doesn't sound as if it is going down too well (well, it's the wrong colour for a start!)

I give warm water with a sugar and a tiny pinch of salt in and ds much prefers it to dioralyte.

CountessDracula · 16/01/2005 19:56

Sophable are you going to take him to the doc in the morning? I would after a puking spell this long. Poor you

Carameli · 17/01/2005 08:34

how it going Sophable? Has he stopped vomiting yet. its horrid seeing them like this. I hope he starts to get a little better soon. this won't be much help but my dd was really unwell for nearly 10days.

ghosty · 17/01/2005 08:53

Sophable ... poor you and poor DS and you too Sponge ...
We are in a similar boat with DD (11.5 months) ...
She hasn't eaten a meal in 8 days and I posted a lot last week about her temperature (that went up to 104!!!)
Vomiting hasn't been too much of a problem but diarrheoa has been and the fact that she refuses all food and drink apart from milk (formula milk).
We have tried every way to get pedialyte into her and eventually the only way was to mix it with milk which worked for a couple of days but now she won't touch the milk if it even has 1oz of pedialyte in it.
Nightmare ...
I would happily stop giving DD milk if she would drink water but she won't and she is in danger of being very dehydrated (she had a dry nappy this morning after 12 hours
I figure that if she will drink milk it is better than nothing at all isn't it?
I hope yours feel better soon.

Sophable

Go back down the thread and read Piffle's advice. She advised me the same when my 8 month old was vomiting on and off for over 10 days. It is the case that a tummy bug can cause the large intestine to become irritated and can cause temporary lactose intolerance (lactose is found in milk and diary), and the acidophulus powder that Piffle suggest (available from health food shops) really helped my ds. It think it contains gut 'friendly bacteria'

Heathcliffscathy · 17/01/2005 11:33

he seems much better!

hasn't puked since yesterday midmorning. has kept mashed pear and mashed carrot and potato down yesterday, and more pear and dry toast down today.

has drunk lots of diaorylyte and and water.

thanks so much for all the advice and support...am going to do a thread about the best tip ever given on this thread...vinegar in water really gets rid of vom smell..superb...thank you

Glad he's feeling better Sophable.
Mine isn't. Still puking lots and two runny nappies already this morning.
I know that milk doesn't help but you can't exclude it for a 5 month old.
Is acidophulus powder OK for ones this little?

Lonelymum · 17/01/2005 16:17

Sophable - glad your ds is getting better. Just don't get careless and give him milk too soon. I would say not until Weds morning if you can avoid it, or if not, give it diluted with as much water as you can get away with. It will take him a few days to get back to normal so don't expect too much too soon.

Glad my advice re vinegar in water worked for you. My mother only told me it a few months ago and I was sceptical, but I have tried it once and it did work didn't it?

handlemecarefully · 18/01/2005 08:51

Sponge - yes it is. I used acidophulus powder for my 8 month old.
