High Diabetes Sugar level

KarlaMayRose · 30/04/2025 18:54

So the last few days I have been peeing more than usual and put it down to me drinking squash or diluting juice as I like to call it lol

I also have Diabetes which to be honest I haven’t been focused on lately which is stupid I know. I just did a glucose check and it’s 19.8mmol which isn’t great. I wonder if this is causing my frequency symptom.

Any Diabetics have any idea.

That's high. Yes definitely causing your symptoms. You need an urgent appointment. How is your diabetes controlled.

Nannyfannybanny · 30/04/2025 18:58

Are you type one or two,are you on meds. Over 11 is not acceptable.

Thelonelydonkey · 30/04/2025 18:59

Call 111

AlmostSummer25 · 30/04/2025 19:02

Yes, that's high. But don't panic.

Wash your hands, test again. Are your tests in date?

T1/T2??

Do you take any meds for it?

& yes, it will affect frequency!!

Killerqueenie · 30/04/2025 19:03

Im not diabetic but I am a nurse. With a blood sugar that high it will definitely be the cause of you urinating more. Your body is trying to get rid of the excess glucose. Are you on any medication? How often do you check your blood glucose?

Walker1178 · 30/04/2025 19:05

You’re definitely running high, and it will make you feel lethargic and pee a lot! Long term hyperglycaemia isn’t great as it can lead to other complications but for now just keep a close eye and seek medical help if you reach 28mmol. Drinking lots and flushing the sugar will help lower it as will taking a gentle walk

KarlaMayRose · 30/04/2025 19:18

Thanks for the replies. I am not on any medication because I was borderline so wanted to trying with changing my diet but to be honest I haven’t paid attention to it like I should have so it’s my fault that I have let it get to this.

The other day I noticed my urine smelled sweet so it makes sense.

Do some exercise, a walk or better still if you have a stationary bike.

Get this under control while you can. Eat low carb & commit to, at least, a daily walk for 30 mins.

you thank yourself in years to come!!

when I was first diabetic and before I really committed to low carb & exercise, I knew when my BG was high because I smelt like warm biscuits.

To be fair with a reading of 19.8, you are definitely not borderline any longer. You are now an uncontrolled T2 diabetic who needs an urgent GP appointment to have blood tests and be commenced on medication.
Please don't delay getting an appointment as blood sugars running that high for any length of time can cause complications further down the line.

KarlaMayRose · 30/04/2025 19:30

i am going to phone the surgery in the morning.

I know about the frequency but can it also feel like you need to go even you pass just a dribble. Or would it be full volumes every time.

OP posts:
redfishcat · 30/04/2025 19:36

Is the squash/ diluting juice sugar free, cos if it is ordinary sugary squash you will be making your blood even higher in sugar.
Drink water and have a total review of your diet to get rid of these hidden sugars.

That sounds more like a uti, not uncommon if sugars are high as ideal conditions for bacteria to multiply. Also ask for ketone strips.

Please get your diet under control. I have a close family member who is struggling with neuropathy in her feet and can barely walk.

The problem with diabetes is that it is insidious and by the time you are feeling the ill effects it is too late to reverse them.

justkeepswimingswiming · 30/04/2025 21:18

Get your ketones tested, my boy who is type one smelt like a fruit. He was in DKA, he nearly died.
Diabetes I know is a hard disease to live with, but it’s not something you can fuck about with. It will
kill you.

SE20schools · 30/04/2025 21:41

Also OP i obviously don't know your medical history but Type 1s are sometimes initially misdiagnosed as Type 2. Might be worth asking if you can be tested for Type 1 which is a whole different thing. If your urine smells sweet you have ketones and need to see a doctor asap. I'd go to A and E if I were you. Or emergency GP appointment first thing

RampantIvy · 30/04/2025 22:17

Or mean you have to have lower limbs amputated or go blind, not to mention the higher risks of strokes and heart attacks and problems with kidneys, gums and nerves.

Complications of diabetes

High blood sugar levels can seriously damage parts of your body, including your feet and your eyes. These are called diabetes complications.

uncomfortablydumb60 · 30/04/2025 23:27

You’re definitely not borderline now OP. Is your “ fizzy juice” sugar free? Just a thought
I’m prediabetic myself.

KarlaMayRose · 01/05/2025 00:18

Just going to bed and haven’t eaten for hours so thought I would test again and it’s now 12.5mmol while that is still very high at least it’s not got any worse I guess.

I know about the frequency but can it also feel like you need to go even you pass just a dribble. Or would it be full volumes every time.

It would usually be larger volumes, as your bladder fills more frequently. It’s possible you also have a uti (bacteria love a warm, damp, sugary environment). That in itself could also cause your blood glucose levels to go a little higher, sort of a vicious circle.

Look on this as a bit of a wake up call. Ideally you really need to address lifestyle issues, as that will in the longer term reduce risks of long term complications by helping control your glucose, blood pressure and cholesterol levels. You possibly need some medication in the mean time too.

This is a website run by a gp surgery that has some great dietary advice for type 2 diabetes. I believe it was set up by a couple of GPs who felt the NHS needed to do more to address diet, rather than just medicalise everything…..

How are things today OP? Did you manage to get seen by your GP?

KarlaMayRose · 01/05/2025 11:22

Just called the doctors they want to see me just now so hopefully we can work out a plan. I am so angry at myself it’s totally my fault.

Don't be angry with yourself. It's hard to make big changes to your lifestyle when you're used to doing things differently. At least you are now taking steps to getting things sorted out. So many people just ignore their health until it ends up being a big problem, but by being seen now, you can prevent any further complications.

Gettingbysomehow · 01/05/2025 12:33

If you don't deal with this now you can go blind or develop heart and kidney failure amongst other things.
You need to go to your GP surgery and sort this out now.

We are all guilty of this from time to time. I’ve had a huge flare up of my crohns recently. I’d let my diet slip as there was so much going on with family stress and strife, I’m sure that played a part in things going badly wrong. There’s a nagging voice in the back of your head telling you to get a grip, but sometimes it’s just too much to be able to be in the right place to do it. No point getting angry and upset with yourself about it, it’s just being human. Good luck with your appointment and your with everything going forward.

uncomfortablydumb60 · 01/05/2025 13:21

You can only do so much
i had an hbaic of 46 in December, after cutting out everything and making big changes my last one was 44!
ok, I’m still within normal range but I thought it would go down a lot more.
Do google Dr David Unwin His approach is excellent More scientific than the Glucose goddess but similar
