My dentist said i had a goitre? Don’t really know much about it but will ring gp. Other thing is I e had the most horrendous fatigue for 6 months and now night sweats for a month. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Thyroid. Get to the gp and get checked asap.

Dollyjon · 28/04/2025 18:15

Is it very urgent? I will ring tomorrow

You need to get your thyroid levels checked sooner rather than later x

Theunamedcat · 28/04/2025 18:18

Overactive thyroid yes it's urgent

Dollyjon · 28/04/2025 18:19

Oh bloody hell. Thanks all. Will ring first thing.

Okay well I'm a bit scared after reading up, I'm not gonna die of a thyroid storm overnight am I?

My daughter had this last year. How's your heart beat? Hers was crazy fast. The medication can work wonders but I'd suggest calling 111 as they'll be able assess if you need immediate action. You must have been feeling awful, hope you start to feel better soon x

Ifyouhavetoask99 · 28/04/2025 19:08

I had the same. If you’ve had symptoms for 6 months you’re not likely to suddenly deteriorate tonight . Get gp appt tomorrow - all the best - it’s a fixable thing if it’s hyperthyroidism . Mine was cured .

It's hard to say because I'm anxious now and I am a worrier so hard to judge. Hope your daughter is feeling better x Yes it's been a nightmare. I have been so tired and thought I was going crazy.

Also - to further reassure you - dentist has a duty of care - if they thought you were in immediate danger they would advise immediately going to gp or a&e

Can I ask what your symptoms were, did you have this crushing fatigue?

Well it was a bit strange, he just said did you know you had that, I said no and he just carried on with the appointment.

@Dollyjon yes! I was so tired all the time , very fast pulse , slight goitre (I couldn’t see it but a medical colleague could) - weight loss , hair loss. I put it all down to final exam stress, but when blood was checked it was hyperthyroid - I went on a treatment of “block and replace” and was cured in 18months - this was 17 yrs ago and never had any problem since .

@Ifyouhavetoask99 Sounds very rough, I'm glad you are okay now. The thing is I don't have any weight loss or hair loss, and I don't think I have a fast pulse. I have:

Crushing fatigue

Funny tired eyes/sort of blurry feeling vision sometimes but I am short sighted

Funny sensations on my skin like hot and cold phantom sensations

Sweating at night, started out once every few weeks, now every night

Irritable but then my life has changed a lot since I've been so tired so i put that down to a low level depression.

Ifyouhavetoask99 · 28/04/2025 19:25

Eye and skin sensations /problems are also symptoms of hyperthyroid - and there are different types of hyperthyroidism - I had Graves’ disease but there’s also Hashimoto disease . It does sound like over active thyroid - but of course could be something else and needs to be checked out. Llast year I had very similar symptoms again and asked gp to recheck my thyroid - it came back negative - symptoms were the tiredness - palpitations but very low heart rate, all put down to menopause x

Ifyouhavetoask99 · 28/04/2025 19:27

Sorry I should have added - I had the night sweats every night 17 yrs ago, and then last year they did return but again it was put down to menopause: are you of that age?

Yes I'm 42, I've been back and forth to the gp and they said it was depression and maybe hormones starting to change and left it at that. I've nearly lost my job, my relationship, it's been horrible.

Would menopause cause a goitre?

Would menopause cause a goitre?

No, it won’t. The problem is that a lot of peri and thyroid symptoms overlap, it took me a year to be diagnosed with Hashimoto’s whilst perimenopausal. But a goitre is thyroid-related, definitely see your GP.

glasgowstations · 28/04/2025 19:45

Goiter is consistent with Graves’ disease. Fuzzy eyesight and very fast heartbeat…sometimes palpitations? Can only really be properly diagnosed with blood test…make sure to ask for THyroid Receptor Antibody (trab) which will confirm if Graves as well as TSH and the others.

Mamadoes · 28/04/2025 19:46

It does sound like hyperthyroidism- my daughter had extreme exhaustion, she'd come back from school and just fall asleep with her coat on, she was so so hungry but also losing weight, the most awful nighmares, tremors, racing heart and fluctuating temperature, either super hot or super cold. It turns out she has Graves' disease and whilst it hasn't been a straightforward 18 months her levels are now back to normal. The medication starts to work fast, although may take a while to fully get back to normal levels, but hopefully you'll start to feel better soon x

Mamadoes · 28/04/2025 19:50

Another weird symptom was she could almost draw on her skin - if she ran a finger over her skin it left marks like scratches that then faded. It was super odd.

Dollyjon · 28/04/2025 20:01

Thank you so much for your replies, it's so nice to be able to come on here and speak to others that have been through similar when worrying, thank you xx
