My dentist said i had a goitre? Don’t really know much about it but will ring gp. Other thing is I e had the most horrendous fatigue for 6 months and now night sweats for a month. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Another weird symptom was she could almost draw on her skin - if she ran a finger over her skin it left marks like scratches that then faded. It was super odd.

Oh that's a strange one, I've noticed cuts not healing as well but that's all.

If it is hyperthyroidism, is there anything to avoid food or drink wise whilst waiting diagnosis?

Goitre can also be hashimoto’s, which is an under active thyroid and would fit with the tiredness. But one way or another, I think you need your thyroid checked. The GP can do some blood tests and then plan from there. If it’s under active, it’s fairly straightforward to correct - you’ll get tablets and the issue willl be getting the correct dose. I can’t comment on overactive thyroid as mine in under active.

Thyroid. Get to the gp and get checked asap.

This. I had this with Grave’s Disease. Was easily treated with medication and I am fine now.
Have you also lost a lot of weight without meaning to and are your emotions all over the place? Periods stopped? I only went to the doctor when I hadn’t had one in 10 months!
I never had to change my diet (although avoid mercury rich food which isn’t too hard). And no you won’t die overnight. Think I was wandering about with it for months and like you put all the symptoms down to stress. I was only 25. I had a short course of medication and it righted itself

I have put on weight (2 stone) but then two factors, I've been in a lot and eating more sweet food so its hard to separate. Also was gradual if it makes any difference? Edit sorry you said lost weight - no have not.

Yes definitely had mood swings, very irritable which isn't like me and very empty inside.

Not everyone gets all the symptoms-I had the whole lot except upset stomach.
Definitely get the thyroid test. If you do have Grave’s it is really horrible but usually very easy to treat.

Answeringaquestiontonight · 28/04/2025 20:26

Putting on weight is usually characteristic of underactive thyroid, but you need the blood tests to be sure which it is.

I think my weight gain aligns with what I've been eating and it's been pretty steady, not saying that for definite and will mention to gp but it doesn't feel unusual.

Yes, had Graves disease, I was 'tired but wired', night sweats, anxiety, bad guts and weight loss, and double vision on waking... It is sortable, but do get checked asap - when my GP got my blood tests back, she called and told me to come in straight away.

If it is, you'll probably be started on carbimazole while waiting for an endocrinology referral. Your GP may not test for antibodies, it might be up to the endo, but it should be done. You may also want to get an optician's appointment while you're waiting and get your eye pressures checked. If you smoke, stop! Selenium supplements, or brazil nuts, can help.

Elaine Moore has lots of info online about it, but don't go mad googling - it may not be Graves at all! But if it is, once you get treatment, you'll feel better, it just takes a little time. Good luck!

(And it's a good dentist you've got there!) 😄

My GP spotted my goitre while I was there for something else. He steered me to the blood test room and it came back with a result consistent with hypothyroidism. I had put on 10 kg too but put it down to perimenopause.

I take the Thyroxine tablets now and have more energy. I did have blurred eyesight for 2 years but that’s cleared up now. And the goitre disappeared after a few weeks of the tablets. Good luck.

In case anyone has the same - so all my tests were normal - bloods, x-ray, not sure what has caused this random growth though.
