Hand hold please- breast lump discovered

I found a pea sized lump on the underside of my breast a few days ago.

I've never felt anything like it before. I've had 'lumpy' boobs at certain times of the month and little spots on nipples etc but this is hard and unmoving and feels attached to something deeper in the breast. It's nowhere near upper skin level. It hurts when I touch it but otherwise not.

I'm seeing GP in a couple days and presume they'll send me to a breast screening place?

Does anyone have experience of what the process is?

My mum had a very tiny lump removed a few years back but they just took it off in two minutes while I was sitting there. I think it was just a Basel cell or not cancerous. Mine seems deeper and bigger than that.

I know many women who've had BC and are perfectly healthy so I'm not scared of dying or anything.

I'm also concerned that if they had to take one breast that they'd only do a boob job on one? Making it look really unnatural.

Any advice or information greatly appreciated!

Thank you x

I hope your GP can get you sorted with an appointment speedily. I have been in this situation before and all was well, as I hope it will be for you.

Mercurial123 · 08/04/2025 13:03

I think you're getting ahead of yourself thinking about a mastectomy and reconstruction. Hopefully it's nothing.

However, as someone who has a rare gene mutation and numerous callbacks for MRIs due to that gene mutation I chose a bilateral mastectomy without reconstruction. So maybe think about your words?

Thank you. I'm so sorry if my words were inappropriate. Of course I didn't mean to sound crass and there's nothing wrong with mastectomy. I am probably just thinking too much as I've never experienced this before. X

Hi I found something in my boob on Thursday - was putting on moisturiser and the skin sort of rippled as if something under surface and saw limp like a flour lump in white sauce. Fortunately I had a nurse’s appointment that morning and told the nurse who got one of the docs who wasn’t worried but nevertheless I have been referred to the screening service and have appointment tomorrow for mammogram possible other tests like biopsy then see docs.

not scared scared as had neck to tail scan before Christmas and presume if anthing then would have been picked up but I am an anxious person and could use a hand hold too. Hope all will be well for us both

imnottoofussed · 08/04/2025 13:17

My experience of the service: saw doctor, referred under 2 week wait to breast clinic at local hospital. Appointment at breast clinic, doctor checked me over, had mammogram and ultrasound scan, doctor used a syringe to drain the lump during the ultrasound as could see it was a cyst. Think it was about 5cm if I recall correctly. Felt like a marble. Sent home all done and dusted.

Hi Bobby,
Had a marble-like lump years ago. Ultrasound suggested cyst - aspirated, analysed - was just a cyst. No recurrence.
Hope same for you.
Xx

@BobbyBiscuits same experience as above. Referred on 2 week pathway and for a generalised lumpiness and thickening
Very efficient clinic run by all women. Mammogram and ultrasound as there was something she wanted to check. Decided it was thickening but not of concern
Was all very straightforward and I felt very well cared for
They impressed upon me that a very high percentage of those they see are innocuous

I've been blessed with lumpy breasts I've been referred 3 times now to the breast clinic and had lumps in between that because I know how they feel have waited a bit longer and they've disappeared on their own. All have been cysts and one was a lumpy bit of breast tissue.

Lifestooshort71 · 08/04/2025 20:41

I found a 3cm lump top quadrant, 3 years ago and saw doc that afternoon and was put on 2-week pathway.

Breast Clinic appt 8 days later - mammo, ultrasound and biopsy all on same day and went back 3 days later for MRI where they found the sinister mothership deep in my breast and attached to my ribs. What was going to be a lumpectomy became a radical mastectomy with lymph node removal followed by radiotherapy. They were unable to get clear margins so I'm on preventative tablets and regular bone infusions.

3 years later and I've got used to being lopsided (recon risky as nobody knew what might be going on) and I've got an excellent quality of life. One of the breast cancer nurses said (and very gently, with great kindness) that BC is one of the better cancers to have and I agree with her.

I hope your hospital appt goes well and you get a clean bill of health - fingers crossed for you 💐

Found a lump last Monday. Saw the GP that afternoon, 8am Tuesday had a text sent through with appointment for the breast clinic which is scheduled for tomorrow afternoon. Terrified but so impressed with how quick everything has been and hoping that tomorrow goes ok!

Hi just had mammogram, ultrasound and examination. All staff lovely and all fine. All the Best to you BobbyBiscuits

MrsRandallFraser · 09/04/2025 17:33

I found a lump on Monday, saw Drs yesterday but they want to review me in a week because I’m breastfeeding and then make a decision re the breast clinic.

Your stories are giving me hope and calming my anxiety, I only had a baby 10 days ago and my mind has been spiralling that just as things are complete in life, it could all be taken away.

Jinkslinger · 10/04/2025 11:47

You poor darling. Hopefully it will be nothing but the waiting is the worst- I had a six week wait for biopsy results last year with doc seemingly sure I had lymphoma and I nearly went mad. In end no sign of malignancy but still being monitored

BobbyBiscuits · 14/04/2025 12:14

Thanks again everyone for sharing your stories and experiences. I've got an appointment at the breast clinic for a couple of weeks time. I'd rather it was sooner but I'm aware it's a very common situation.
Wishing you all health and happiness.
You've all been really supportive and helpful ❤️ x

Sorry you have to wait that long but at least it seems they know if there is an issue or not quite quickly once they screen you. Let us know how you get on.

Thank you. Yeah I was kind of hoping it would be this week maybe. But it's the NHS so...
I'm sure they will do something swiftly as soon as it's established what's going on in there.
I will update here once I've been x

Your post sounds much like my experience, even down to what my consultant said. That we are ‘luck’ to have BC because it’s been one of the most researched and treated.

i too have had a single mastectomy and am now on letroxole for the foreseeable.

about to start six weeks of radiotherapy.

i understand your fear but you have a great chance of it being nothing sinister.

even if it is BC it’s likely to be a treatable cancer more than not.

im also going flat from here on in.
TBH it’s quite empowering, weirdly!

im sure you’ll be fine, doesn’t take away the fear that you’ll be feeling now.
