Sensitivity to toothpaste?

Firefly1987 · 27/03/2025 22:32

Anyone had this? My gums sting/tingle like crazy but it comes and goes and I still can't figure out what the problem is. At first I thought stress/hormones but then I started suspecting my toothpaste (Sensodyne gentle whitening) although it doesn't happen until a while after I brush. I switched back to Colgate which helped a bit but I just used some orajel tonight for a small area that was hurting and within 20 mins my whole mouth was tingling/hurting again. The only ingredient I can see in both is sodium saccharin and I think that's in all toothpastes, including Colgate. So I'm stumped. Has anyone else ever had a reaction to toothpaste or orajel?

Yes, I did. The toothpaste I was using was causing the inside of my cheeks to peel off in thin strands. Look on line and find a supplier of a toothpaste called Biotene (I think too lazy to go and look in the bathroom) There's a chemical called sodium.......? which is the culprit and its in lots of toothpastes. I can't use Sensodyne either.

Zooeyzebra · 27/03/2025 22:42

It’s actually really common, look for an sls free toothpaste, not super easy to find one that is sls free but does contain fluoride. One of the sensodynes is sls free but others are not so make sure to check

Chypre · 27/03/2025 22:45

My tongue was peeling from Sensodyne, yes. I’ve had multiple attempts as I’ve had purchased couple of those on offer, but result was the same.

RunLikeTheWild · 27/03/2025 22:54

Yes I get this, not looked into what ingredient causes it but sometimes is sensitive toothpaste which is annoying!!
I also get itchy gums randomly, taking an antihistamine helps.

YellowSunRays · 27/03/2025 23:10

Yes, this started for me in perimenopause when I also developed sensitivity to skincare products I'd used for years.
I can't use any toothpaste with sodium laurel sulphate.
Not all Sensodyne has it as an ingredient.

I think the gentle whitening one that I was using is supposed to be SLS free-I heard about this causing issues in lots of people, would be great if that was the problem but I don't think it is.

I'm beginning to think I've developed a sensitivity to mint! I would just think it's gum disease if not for the fact it comes and goes and even affects my lip and top of my mouth. Honestly has me stumped, I've never had a sensitivity to toothpaste in my life. A couple months ago I thought it was Listerine mouthwash causing it because it's so strong, and it got better for a bit after stopping but seems like it's back again.

Oh no, if only it was as easy as the sls, the one I use is the green box one, seems like it’s the only one I can find that is free of sls and does not cause a problem.

if I do get a reaction, I will switch to a baby toothpaste for a time or one of the all natural free of everything ones. But I do want the fluoride so can’t switch to them permanently.

i do steer clear of anything whitening in general

Zooeyzebra · 27/03/2025 23:42

You could try one of the kids mint free types or Maybe even see if it is a fluoride sensitivity.

Marvis does a heap of different flavours, some with fluoride some without. But I do think they have sls in them

justasking111 · 27/03/2025 23:45

My sensodyne has started giving me this problem. I keep a glass in the bathroom and thoroughly swill my mouth out with water after brushing.

Lollygaggle · 27/03/2025 23:49

As others have said sls can be a problem (sodium lauryl sulphate) , but also many flavourings typically thymol, cinnamon etc can cause problems.

Ora nurse is a non flavoured, non foaming toothpaste , available in some boots and on line. It is good for those with both sensory problems and those who have sensitivities to flavourings and additives in toothpastes.

There is no such thing as fluoride sensitivity . Fluoride is present in many things from tea to root vegetables to water , so it is impossible to have a diet free of fluoride .

oranurse is a fluoride containing non sls , non flavoured , non foaming toothpaste which is excellent for those who may be sensitive to thymol, cinnamon and the many other flavourings used in toothpaste L

I've had this recently with sensodyne whitening toothpaste! Got a tingly feeling on my tongue which kept turning into ulcers! I've stopped using and gone back to Colgate and no tingly feeling or ulcers now.

Try Oranurse it has no flavourings , no sls or foaming agents and has fluoride. You can get in some boots or online eg Amazon.

@Zooeyzebra for a natural one that still contains fluoride you could try Kingfisher. I buy mine at waitrose. It’s a green stripey box. They do one without fluoride too so be careful, be sure to look for the green stripey box one that says fluoride on it.

Firefly1987 · 27/03/2025 23:59

@Baseballdino wow interesting! So much for "dentist recommended"! I can't really see any issue with my gums but they just tingle like crazy. Sensodyne is not a brand I ever used before. I think it could be something in the whitening so will be avoiding that from now on. Glad to know it resolved for you.

We’ve been using toothpaste with hydroxyapatite rather than flouride and it’s amazing for teeth sensitivity. It also has no nasty SLS in it (which is used by the way in industrial cleaning products and engine degreaser - yuck!) and actually reminerlises teeth. It’s been great for all the family and has cured my teeth sensitivity.

There are many sls free toothpastes containing fluoride including from Aldi , Superdrug etc . This is not an exhaustive list www.dchft.nhs.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Low-Foaming-Toothpastes-February-2020.pdf

My dentist advised me that I had receding gums and that was actually causing the pain so I need £6 sensodyn toothpaste

RamsestheDamned · 28/03/2025 00:08

sensodyne extra fresh is the only toothpaste I can use

Thank you, have had an ulcer on the tip of my tongue and inside of my lips feels burnt and sore........started using the sensodyne whitening toothpaste about a week ago but hadn't connected the two💡🤦‍♀️

I worry about having receding gums too, am due to go dentist soon (keep putting it off as I have to go private) can I ask what sort of pain you get with that? Does it come and go or is it there all the time?

Thanks but I’ll be sticking to hydroxyapatite toothpaste. Not used flouride for decades. Perfect teeth, no cavities or cavities for our family of 5.

We use nano hydroxyapatite toothpaste tablets - they're amazing. Fixed my & DH sensitive teeth, and I haven't had the inside of my mouth peel off like it did constantly with toothpaste (& that was with the few that I didn't just give me instant ulcers/cracked & bleeding lips).

Interesting. What are the tablets and how do you use them? Do you use instead of toothpaste or as well as?

I am a big hydroxyapatite fan:) It’s so natural (compared to most toothpaste) but also has a remineraliaing effect. It also makes for very shiny white teeth 🦷 😁

They're just a dried version of the toothpaste so you crunch one up in your teeth then start brushing. There's a foaming at the mouth effect but tbh that just encourages the kids to brush!
