Sensitivity to toothpaste?

Firefly1987 · 27/03/2025 22:32

Anyone had this? My gums sting/tingle like crazy but it comes and goes and I still can't figure out what the problem is. At first I thought stress/hormones but then I started suspecting my toothpaste (Sensodyne gentle whitening) although it doesn't happen until a while after I brush. I switched back to Colgate which helped a bit but I just used some orajel tonight for a small area that was hurting and within 20 mins my whole mouth was tingling/hurting again. The only ingredient I can see in both is sodium saccharin and I think that's in all toothpastes, including Colgate. So I'm stumped. Has anyone else ever had a reaction to toothpaste or orajel?

The fluoride in toothpaste gives me hard bumps in my mouth and on my face. Sort of like hives but they don’t go away and are filled with some rock like substance.

the most common preservatives and the flavorings in most pastes trigger an allergic reaction.

I order my toothpaste online from a company that makes something that is basically ever so slightly nicer than brushing with baking soda.

There is no such thing as fluoride sensitivity . Fluoride is present in many things from tea to root vegetables to water , so it is impossible to have a diet free of fluoride .

oranurse is a fluoride containing non sls , non flavoured , non foaming toothpaste which is excellent for those who may be sensitive to thymol, cinnamon and the many other flavourings used in toothpaste L

Good to know. I definitely can’t use sls but always look to find something with fluoride in it, but obviously not a health care professional so no idea what other people may or may not be sensitive to

will keep an eye out for organise, sounds fab, thanks for the tip!

I think the gentle whitening one that I was using is supposed to be SLS free-I heard about this causing issues in lots of people, would be great if that was the problem but I don't think it is.

I'm beginning to think I've developed a sensitivity to mint! I would just think it's gum disease if not for the fact it comes and goes and even affects my lip and top of my mouth. Honestly has me stumped, I've never had a sensitivity to toothpaste in my life. A couple months ago I thought it was Listerine mouthwash causing it because it's so strong, and it got better for a bit after stopping but seems like it's back again.

Does it have stannous fluoride as the active ingredient?

I can't use any of the Sensodyne varieties that have that in (including, ironically, their "gum and enamel" one) because they cause my gums to bleed.

I'm fine with any that use sodium fluoride or sodium monofluorphosphate instead.

I just stick to Colgate Sensitive Pro Relief now.

renomeno · 28/03/2025 04:14

I also use a hydroxyapatite toothpaste without sls (called SPLAT! via Amazon) which is brilliant. Also recommend aloe based toothpastes too. No more mouth/gum issues since ditching ‘normal’ toothpaste

Many of the stannous fluoride toothpastes used thymol as a flavouring and that caused sloughing of gums in some people .

Nano hydroxyapatite toothpastes are fine , they have an effectiveness similar to fluoride toothpastes .

unfortunately most aloe Vera toothpastes do not contain fluoride or nano hydroxyapatite so are useless in controlling decay.

Most people who have toothpaste problems are either sensitive to SlS and there are many SLS free toothpastes from herbalux sold in Aldi , to various others

or they are sensitive to flavourings so something like Oranurse which is sls, flavouring and foaming agent free but has fluoride in it is good .

That’s awful that flouride did that to your mouth. So many mainstream products are so toxic 😔 I wish more people knew about hydroxyapatite.

Could you share the brand you use please?

notnorman · 28/03/2025 08:51

i think it’s the original sensodyne I bought my daughter when everything else gave her terrible mouth ulcers

Netcam · 28/03/2025 08:56

DH and I use Lavera sensitive, it is the best SLS free toothpaste we have tried and has fluoride in, which many don't. We get it from Amazon.

Fluoride in toothpaste is no more toxic than the fluoride in tea or root vegetables or seafood or water .

Sensodyne strengthening here noticed the tingling and burning when I rinsed out

Ecocool · 28/03/2025 10:19

For a while I became allergic to peppermint toothpaste (and all things peppermint). I had to use strawberry or some other flavoured toothpaste. It resolved itself (?) after about....I think a year. I have (well controlled) asthma.

I worry about having receding gums too, am due to go dentist soon (keep putting it off as I have to go private) can I ask what sort of pain you get with that? Does it come and go or is it there all the time?

It comes and goes it hurts if I eat anything like chocolate. Basically a bit of the root is exposed and special toothpaste helps it not to hurt when I brush my teeth. There’s no fix for receding gums they don’t grow back. switch to an electric toothbrush the manual ones cause the gums to recede if you brush too forcefully.

Fluoride in toothpaste is no more toxic than the fluoride in tea or root vegetables or seafood or water .

The thing with fluoride is the dose is the poison. Yes it occurs naturally in tea and shellfish but in high concentrations it has proven to be toxic and some toothpastes have high concentrations. Which is why a lot of people are having issues with their mucosal membranes (as seen on this thread) and why research shows it lowers IQ in children.

MovingBird123 · 28/03/2025 13:45

I was sensitive to sls in toothpaste. Also found the skin in my mouth peeling off, disgusting. I use the sensodyne with that slightly green shiny top. I wait until it's on a bargain at the supermarket (every couple of months), then buy loads. Not worth it otherwise.

But yours sounds like a different sensitivity! Have you checked with the dentist?

The mucous membranes problem is sls or thymol not fluoride.
Water is toxic if enough is consumed
Fluoride in toothpaste is safe a child would have to eat 2 to. 3 tubes for it to be a problem.
The studies are those linking IQ and fluoride in water are at levels in excess of what water is fluoridated to in U.K. and elsewhere according to World Health Organisation fluoride recommendations ie is in Mexico,China,India ,Iran etc where some ground water supplies have high levels of naturally occurring fluoride .

I just checked and they (Sensodyne - I still have an unopened pack) don't list that in their ingredients (active or inactive.)

However, my current mouthwash has thymol in it and no issues, so I'm clearly not sensitive to that.

SLS (sodium laurel sulphate) , pyrophosphate (anti tartar ) and flavourings eg cinnamon , menthol etc can also cause sloughing.

Coffeeforayear · 28/03/2025 17:40

Dh had this issue and now uses Sensodyne pronamel.

That's great information but the Colgate Total Whitening that I used for many months after stopping the Sensodyne, before I thought to try Colgate Sensitive Pro Relief, contains SLS and Tetrasodium pyrophosphate.
I have no issues with either of those ingredients.

I'm not saying that I can know for sure that it's definitely the stannous form of fluoride that causes my gums to bleed each time I use the gum health Sensodyne. They'll no doubt use different flavorings to Colgate. But it's obviously not SLS or pyrophosphate because they're both in Colgate Total Whitening.

There is actually a Sensodyne range I can use without experiencing the same ill effects and that's Pronamel, regardless of whether I use their clean mint, arctic breeze or cool mint flavour (can you tell I've really tried to narrow this sensitivity down, LOL!) They all contain sodium fluoride, not stannous...

Yes! ^

@Coffeeforayear posted that while I was busy digging around in my bathroom cupboard and comparing toothpaste ingredients, before submitting my last post, LOL!

Daisydad · 28/03/2025 18:02

I can’t use SLS, Sensodyne pronamel daily is good for me, and Boots sensitive mouthwash is lovely and mild

Firefly1987 · 28/03/2025 19:14

I just checked my mouthwash and that has SLS in it! So maybe that was causing or contributing to the problem. Unfortunately I can't remember how many times I used it or if it coincided with the pain. I already switched from the alcoholic Listerine to the mild one because I thought that was the cause. So I'll be avoiding that from now on too. Why do they call things "mild" and "gentle" when for some of us they're anything but! My mouth is a bit better today, was SO bad yesterday. I think I will have to get some different toothpaste without all the crap they put in most of them-thanks for the recommendations guys. I'm never using Orajel again either, will stick to Bonjela. Maybe my mouth is just super sensitive atm for some reason.

Thanks. Yeah am scared of receding gums, I think it's happening on one tooth, maybe more. I do brush too hard, recently switched to a soft toothbrush and trying to be more gentle. I don't feel like I can clean properly with an electric toothbrush but it's been years since I used one. Maybe I should try again. I defo don't want to make my gums any worse. Have a feeling I started clenching/grinding in my sleep which contributes as well. Ugh I never had any teeth/gum problems at all til this year 😔
