Does anyone else suffer with it?! I'm sat here listening to my husband SLURP his gravy and it's knocking me sick 😂 i dread dinner times, puts me in a bad mood
Is there even a cure for this awful problem? Misophonia not the husband 😂

I'm almost fine with eating noises, but mine manifests itself badly in clicking noises. Anything repetitive. It got so bad at one point that just seeing someone with a clicky pen would mean I left the room.

It is also progressing to repetitive movements without a noise. DH can't keep still, drives me bonkers.

Yep I’m the same with seeing repetitive movements too. I’m finding my commute really hard with all the sniffing and throat clearing, well any mouth noises really, along with non-headphone use. Add someone twirling their hair or touching their face repetitively and I want cry. Then murder them. Then it all starts again in the office.

Arran2024 · 26/03/2025 22:02

As well as the eating noises, I can't stand football/rugby commentating on tv or mostvradio djs. This is a fairly new one for me. It islike someone drilling my ears.

Years ago I went to see the Sound of Music at the london palladium. Our seats were right up at the top, at the back. When the nuns sang "climb every mountain" at the end, it was like someone sticking daggers in my ears. It was agonisingly painful. I was crying, everyone else thought I was crazy. I don't like female singers much, they have to have a low tone, like Tina Turner say. And I can't bear tinkly music like Mozart. Gregorian chant on the other hand...

QuickPeachPoet · 26/03/2025 22:05

I can’t bear any mouth noises. Raspberry blowing, tutting, kissing, loud eating. Makes me irrationally angry.
And people yawning makes me want to punch something

wastingtimeonhere · 26/03/2025 22:07

@Chariots77I trained DC from a young age. They had exceptional table manners from a young age. It was often commented on. There is no good reason for chomping, slopping and slurping. Eat properly or food was removed until they decided to eat properly. It's not difficult. ( and no, no food issues just good manners developed as a result)

sorechalfonts · 26/03/2025 22:11

@Arran2024 and the radio ads 😣😣😣and when they speed up the T & C’s on them - torture

CharlotteStreetW1 · 26/03/2025 22:12

I have it. The worst for me is recorded sound effects especially finger tapping á la ASMR.

Also there's currently a Tesco radio ad which has crunch and snap sound effects - the radio is lucky still to be in one piece.

Alllll · 26/03/2025 22:15

I get this with the scrunching of packets. The people who take forever to take a fucking crisp out of the bag. And people in metings who take an hour to open a sweet. Makes me feel violent.

Arran2024 · 26/03/2025 22:17

I once sat on a train next to a man who ate a toffee apple.....I get enraged every time I think about it! I was stuck and couldn't get out.

It is miserable isn't it, people don't realise how bad it is. My husband chews so loud I could cry sometimes. I couldn't be around anyone eating an apple 🤢

I can hear the saliva flowing as my DH chews and don't get me started on the swallowing noises. I've had to ask him to move further away!

I do agree, I dont know why some people have to sound like they're eating from a trough!

Gettingbysomehow · 26/03/2025 22:41

I grew up with a mother who had very obvious and loud nervous tics and non swearing tourettes plus weird laughing.my stepfather could not eat without slurping, smacking g his lips and spilling food out of his mouth.
By the time I begged to go to boarding school I was near a complete breakdown.
I never see them...I just can't cope with it. It's totally ruined our relationship.
How I wish I could just ignore the noises like my siblings but it makes me so tense I could snap.

getahhtmapub · 26/03/2025 19:28

if my DH eats something with just a fork he uses his teeth to get the food off the fork rather than lips. The teeth scraping on the fork makes me murderous. His parents were here recently for several weeks and they both do it too. I had to excuse myself from dinner a few times as I just couldn’t cope with it.

Omg!! My DH does this too, it’s horrific the teeth scraping noise. He also has a loudly clicking jaw and chomps with his mouth open. I cannot sit next to him when he eats. Added to that, he talks with his mouth full!

BanditoShipman · 26/03/2025 22:52

I hate all the eating noises, have to have tv or music on or I couldn’t do family meals.

i only found out the other day that noise doesn’t necessarily cause other people pain, I get really upset at sirens or motorbikes going past and it feels like it physically hurts. Explained to DH and he looked at me like I was insane. So there’s a reason I’ve been called dramatic over hating loud noises for years, other people don’t feel pain/rage at them?

Imonmyway · 27/03/2025 05:40

Omg I always wondered why I was so triggered and nobody else was!

The fork scraping, slurping, the jaws clicking oh I could go on
I also have trypophobia....are these linked??

Partner snd friend aren't annoyed by either...

loveforautumn · 27/03/2025 07:23

After reading all these comments I feel for every one of you 😫

I was doom scrolling Facebook the other day and something came up that looked interesting, one of those list things that each thing displays one at a time... but in the corner of the screen was someone tapping a pen and waggling it. Watched one "fact" come up - Couldn't look at any videos all day after that one. (Would be a good social media avoidance scheme).

Was shocked how anxious I was. Menopause + misophonia really sucks.

Iamnotavicar · 27/03/2025 07:57

I am convinced my husband, his brother and father had a secret language where they communicated how they felt through grunts, throat clearing, sniffing, snorting, and nose blowing. 3 of them together was horrendous especially when eating, the extensive lip smacking!!
But I know I'm very sensitive eg migraines, a sense of smell like a sniffer dog, I dislike bright lights and loud noises, and any general intrusion.

Poonu · 29/03/2025 15:50

I know people like that 😄 lol

PickleSarnie · 22/04/2025 13:30

Whilst this thread makes me feel so much better that I'm not alone. Has anyone tried anything - CBT, therapy, something else - that has actually helped?

It's getting to the point where I'm finding it actually quite debilitating. I feel my kids are missing out on things because I'll avoid situations where I know there's going to be noises I can't tolerate. I also don't want them to pick up on my noise issues and end up with them struggling with them too. I'm willing to throw money at anything that might help!

Energe · 22/04/2025 13:31

Me. I can’t eat at the table with DH. It makes me want to kill him with my spoon

Energe · 22/04/2025 13:34

MIL with an apple. I’m instantly seeing red

Everintroverte · 22/04/2025 14:02

Oh my gosh, I have this! Unable to tolerate eating noises, repetitive tapping, banging or beeping and lots of audio at the same time (e.g. A conversation taking place with the TV on and someone playing a you tube video, although you tube videos drive me insane on their own).

Quite tricky as my partners kids are terrible for smacking their lips, licking their lips while eating and cramming so much in their mouths they can't actually close their mouth properly. Luckily my partner has it too so we tend to have the radio on in the background and he deals with his children!

CanteringAlong · 22/04/2025 14:15

those who are saying they are misophonic, are you neurodivergent?

CanteringAlong · 22/04/2025 14:15

No I'm not neurodivergent. I grew up with a mother who had extreme nervous tics and over the years became irritated by it to the point of insanity. I believe that set off the misophonia.

Dymaxion · 22/04/2025 14:37

those who are saying they are misophonic, are you neurodivergent?

No not neurodivergent, its been a life long thing for me. I can cope with it in certain situations, so at work if a patient is eating noisily or a very small child, I can tune it out, everyone else doing it makes me feel upset/angry. I did wonder if hypnosis might help ?
