Fucking vertigo - how on earth do you get rid of it?

I've had vertigo on and off now since beginning of December. I had that horrible throat virus that everyone seems to be catching - razor blades and then loss of voice. My ears were bubbling inside (presumable Eustachian tubes). I don't bother my GP for these things but mentioned it last week when I saw her. She said it can take 3 months to disappear. I'm sick of feeling sick! Anyone have any magic cures out there?

Did they dr give you medication i can't remember what it was called what I was given but it worked really well. I no longer get it thankfully

WonderingWanda · 14/03/2025 20:35

Have you googled the epley manoeuvre?

ClemmyTine · 14/03/2025 20:36

I've had it twice.. the first time I had antibiotics the second time I can't recall if I had them again but the doc also gave me tablets for sea sickness. I didn't have to use them though.

TheOnlyAletheia · 14/03/2025 20:36

eply or travel sickness tablets

Zeitumschaltung · 14/03/2025 20:39

It depends why you have the vertigo. The Epley manoeuvre is for BBPV.
My vertigo turned out to be vestibular migraines, so migraine medication sorted it out.

lovelydayIhave · 14/03/2025 20:39

Try to take iron supplements daily.

vdbfamily · 14/03/2025 20:42

Has someone diagnosis vertigo or have you self diagnosis. Google Epley manoeuvre and try it a couple of times over a couple of days. It will not do you any harm and might magically cure you! Or you can ask your GP or a vestibular physio

pizzaHeart · 14/03/2025 20:45

DH did exercises, I think they were on NHS website but his vertigo went away quickly.
There is medication for this but I don’t remember the name.

Butthechildrentheylovethebooks · 14/03/2025 20:45

I had a serious vertigo episode a few weeks ago. The doctor gave me some tablets that increase blood flow to the ear in case it happened again. I also took travel sickness tablets which helped. I feel for you, it was awful.

NewMagicWand · 14/03/2025 20:47

I got given some tablets when I had it. I can't remember what they were but I believe they were a very low dose of a mild antipsychotic. I remember being surprised when I read the leaflet.

It went away. But I wasn't also poorly. I don't know why it happened. I actually called an ambulance because it was like I was suddenly dropping down drunk for no reason. Very scary at the time!

piscofrisco · 14/03/2025 20:50

I had it for 6 bloody months when my girls were little. My mum had to move in with me at one point it was so bad. I’ve had it on and off since but never so badly or for as long again, touch wood.
things that helped me: sea sickness tablets
walking daily even when I didn’t at all want to to try and retrain my balance iyswim,
daily steam inhalation, having my ears syringed, and sort of facial massage as I felt it was connected to my sinuses a bit and it did seem to help. But mostly you just have to wait it out. All the best to you OP, it’s rubbish :(

pfredi · 14/03/2025 21:24

Iv suffered with loss of balance for over 10 years...its awful...it has impacted in my daily life drastically...initially it was thought I had a virus but eventually I was diagnosed with BPPV when my gp referred me to a Balance Specialist...due to two surgeries on my back, I am unable to have the epley manoeuvre. I can no longer drive and I describe my days as being drunk but without the alcohol. My right side seems more affected and even lying down causes a feeling of the room spinning.

PositivityVibes · 15/03/2025 07:47

Epley manoeuvre will sort it out, really simple and effective

hockityponktas · 15/03/2025 08:07

For mild vertigo my GP prescribed Prochlorperazine, you can buy this over the counter brand name Buccastem. When it go so severe that I couldn’t move or even keep water down, they prescribed betahistine.

Rattai · 15/03/2025 08:10

You may have labyrinthitis.

This is the one.

it does take time but keep doing this.

Abhannmor · 15/03/2025 09:45

When I had labyrinthitis they gave me Stemetil. Very fast working...thank God.

RoxieLoxy · 15/03/2025 09:52

It's awful OP. I've had similar since Jan and also started with a weird virus (wonder if it's post Covid?). I feel off balance rather than vertigo every day and also my neck hurts on and off so mine is thought to be from my neck. It's very anxiety inducing I find. Difficult to get on with stuff when the feeling is there all the time.

justasking111 · 15/03/2025 10:05

Dentist gave me antibiotics for a tooth infection it cured the vertigo. Six weeks in bed after a cold with it tried all the meds. Was an infection GP hadn't spotted.

Hi how long did your episode last? I’m having a horrific episode for 4 days now after flying

somethingnewandexciting · 06/10/2025 20:17

Check it's not a migraine - they can encompass vertigo as a symptom

Because of the flight I would think of mal de debarquement first

ThisCanFuckOffToo · 06/10/2025 20:57

As mentioned several times the Epley Manoeuvre will sort it out but don’t do it on your own as it can make you feel worse before you feel better but omg it’s amazing!

Thankfully just 24 hrs. But I could not do anything but lie down. Had to build myself up to go to the toilet as the feeling was so horrific. The travel sickness med DH brought home with him that evening definitely helped. I did go to the doctor as soon as I could to be checked. I would certainly contact the Dr if I was you. Hope you get better soon.
