Waking up with headaches every morning... anyone else overcome this!

Dr's no use, bloods start prediabetic. Was very anemic previously, now borderline.

Dr's say just to keep a headache diary, but do nothing with it. Just send for more bloods, been round this cycle 3 times. Every morning I wake up with a headache, dizziness and nausea. If its my period, it gets so bad i usually have to take a day or two off work. I often pray the day falls on a weekend so I don't have to take more time off.

I need help, my Dr's don't understand the suffering.

Just wondering if anyone else can help or support if been through similar and came out fixed?

How much water do you drink? Have you tried having a snack before you go to bed, could be low blood sugar.

Songlines · 28/02/2025 07:44

Do you find that having Tea or coffee alleviates the headache? If so, it could be a withdrawal symptom

I drink lots of water atleast 1.5 litres a day, I'll try something before bed. Not done that before, usually stop eating after evening meal so will try. Thank you.

Waking up with a banging headache each morning can be a sign of sleep apnea. I am a respiratory nurse, do you get tired in the day at all? Like exhausted?

BoudiccaRising · 28/02/2025 12:47

I have to sip water through the night or else I wake up with a headache even though I drink plenty during the day. So maybe dehydration?

Maybe sinuses, they can also cause headaches after lying down.

Greybeardy · 28/02/2025 13:46

have you got a carbon monoxide monitor? Need to get one if not +/- get the boiler serviced/chimneys swept.

and do you open the bedroom windows every day?

IncompleteSenten · 28/02/2025 13:48

I used to have this. I was sent to sleep clinic. It is respiratory depression and i now have a bipap.
Talk to your GP about tht possibility

Theuniversalshere1 · 28/02/2025 13:52

Thanks all a lot of things to consider. We do have carbon monoxide alarms yes as we have open fire and log burner. Windows open also, however the other things I will definitely try out.

Really appreciate it. I do get exhausted during the day... but sleep next to partner, theu would know if sleep apnea as a light sleeper?

Really appreciate you all taking time out to reply.

Not necessarily, you probably snore and your breathing would be delayed but it wouldn't be obvious if your partner is a fairly good sleeper. Time to make that GP appointment!

harlacem0507 · 28/02/2025 18:52

Also I don't mean to be rude asking this but are you overweight? As this is a significant risk factor too.

JoyousEagle · 28/02/2025 19:03

Have you been taking painkillers? Is it medication overuse?

jellycat · 28/02/2025 19:09

I used to have chronic sinusitis due to having allergic rhinitis and would wake up with a headache and dizziness every morning from that. Might be worth considering if you have any symptoms of an allergy.

The other thing that has given me terrible headaches recently is omeprazole. Lots of medicines can cause headaches as a side effect - are you taking any medications?

Definitely worth booking a GP appointment IMO.

singletonatlarge · 28/02/2025 19:16

This sounds like migraine to me, especially as it is worse around your period. I have migraines and go through phases of waking up with them. Ask the GP if they can prescribe you a triptan e.g. sumatriptan - if that makes the headache go away, it is a migraine, and you can then try different migraine treatments.

Stillplodding · 28/02/2025 19:45

What are your blood results re the anaemia? The GP can set the boundaries quite low- lower than other guidelines.

i found my headaches worse when I was very deficient in ferritin.

I also find I wake with a headache if I’ve got too hot at night. I need a cold room, so unless it’s mid winter I sleep with a window open.

I hope you find an answer.

Squeakpopcorn · 28/02/2025 19:48

Are you clenching your teeth? I get headaches due to this. Dentist can make a mouth guard which is supposed to ease it.

Pebbles16 · 28/02/2025 20:54

Firstly - look at hydration
Secondly - bruxism (teeth grinding)
Thirdly - rebound headaches from over-medication

summer3219 · 28/02/2025 21:22

I used to get this and found that it seems to be caused by caffeine withdrawal. I now take a cup of tea to bed every night and it has stopped. Never keeps me awake.

Waltzers · 01/03/2025 04:47

I have a headache at least 5 days a week, usually wake up with it although sometimes they come on later in the day, 1 or 2 of those each week are migraines. I feel like I live on painkillers, I can't go out without a selection of triptans, nausea meds, panadol and nurofen!Have had multiple tests repeated over the years, conclussion is they're hormonal - have definitely worsened since peri menopause kicked in 6 years ago. I'm in Australia where you're not limited to only seeing one GP and had to shop around to find a sympathetic one. I've now tried enough preventative measures (all of which have failed) to qualify for a referral to a neurologist who they think will recommend infusion treatment. Have everything crossed that this will be my cure!

Do the diary, note down what meds you took each time and how its impacting your life ie time off work and just keep going back.

Waltzers · 01/03/2025 04:54

Sorry just re read that you've done the diary and didn't get far, I would push for trying triptans if you haven't already or something preventative if you have. Constant headaches are miserable.

Sorry just catching up with this thread. I feel your pain it's awful isn't it. I hope things improve for you.

Got some good advice and food for thought, so will explore.

Migraines I definitely get when it is my period, other times I'd describe as a headache rather than a migraine. I experience both but very differently.

Ferritin is in 30s range atm, at my worst it was 3.7!

I have been religiously taking iron supplements and drinking a lot of water and luckily it is helping and although had headaches not as frequently.

I woke up without one and felt like Christmas day or my birthday!
Health is definitely wealth!

I get fairly frequent headaches (deffo worse around my period) and acupuncture has really helped me. I definitely suffer less frequently and less severely since I started having regular hypnotherapy about 18 months ago

I hesitate to post this because it may cause people to freak out. I’ve had 2 craniotomies and a morning headache is a brain tumour symptom. The ionly thing which will rule this out is a scan. The GP will probably be reluctant to do this.

I agree a brain scan is a good starting point to rule things out. I'm in Australia and had an MRI when things worsened after the onset of peri menopause. That revealed a small abnormality in the side of my brain that I get migraines. I had further MRI's to monitor it but nothing changed so it was considered to not be a problem. I've had another MRI more recently just to be sure we're not missing anytning, and again there's been no changes. Having that information helps with what further treatments and tests to try.
