My little girl had this happen to her tongue this afternoon whilst she was in childcare. Does anybody know what this is? She screamed for about 2 hours when she got home. Im still waiting for a call back from 111, but she’s sleeping now so will take her to the GP tomorrow.

The only thing i can think of is a burn? It was noticed during tea time. She had been fine all day!

The pictures are the three different stages. Last being how it currently is, Its still peeling now!

Gosh that looks so sore.

Did childcare give you any explanations?
I think I would perhaps take her to A and E to rule out chemical burns.

mommyfinger · 24/02/2025 22:06

Omg that looks awful, it must be so sore ! Yes I think burn too, what have nursery said?

mommyfinger · 24/02/2025 22:06

Could you use some teething gel if it still hurts ?

TomatoSandwiches · 24/02/2025 22:11

I'm surprised she's sleeping tbh I don't think I could if it were me.
I'd probably have taken her to A&e by now sorry. You just can't risk it with burns if it is.

twig1234 · 24/02/2025 22:13

Has she got a rash? Could be scarlet fever

I had a message to say that it looks like she has thrush. But she was fine up until tea time! Shepherd’s pie for tea which made me question a burn!

As its so raw I have been reluctant to put anything on it. The only relief she is getting is from ice lollies and water bless her

I think I would be more confident it wasn't 'serious' if I had a timeline of events for the childminder.

She has just woken crying with her hand in her mouth. Still no call back from 111. I will see how she goes over the next hour or two before deciding. Its just my assumption that it is a burn as i have no idea what else it could possibly be!

It looks like thrush to me too but I'm not expert. Poor thing must be very sore.

She just said she noticed it was irritating her when she helped to feed her tea. But didn’t notice anything earlier on in the day at lunch time ect. Send a picture saying she thinks she may have thrush.

She must be in agony.
I think you should take her to hospital now.

DrWu · 24/02/2025 22:18

My daughters goes like that if she bites it, it goes white and spreads across her whole tongue. The same happens to her lips and cheeks if she bites them too.

Its worth getting it checked out, hope it starts to feel better for her soon

stayathomegardener · 24/02/2025 22:18

Is there any chance she could have been exposed to cleaning products for example?
I really hope it's something simple but you can't mess around with potential ingestion.

hby9628 · 24/02/2025 22:18

I think it looks like a burn. I've never seen anything like that before especially as the skin is peeling off. Does it look any worse now or the same?
Your poor daughter. Can she take any pain relief? I think you should get it checked out.

No rash but looking at the pictures on NHS the tongue looks very similar!

111 callbacks can take forever. I had one at 4 in the morning once when id rung them early evening. I'd take her to get it looked at.

PearPineappleApplePen · 24/02/2025 22:23

I think this is 'strawberry tongue' Scarlett fever.

She'll need antibiotics if so. So drs trip first thing tomorrow. Calpol /nurofen. Check to see if she has a temperature.

Poor little girl - looks painful

Greentomatoes21 · 24/02/2025 22:24

Her tongue is very white and the redness very red by contrast (and not a typical pink tongue colour) - any sore throat? My son's strawberry tongue began like this when he had scarlet fever. It looks so sore, poor wee thing. I would probably get her checked out by an out of hours GP if that's an option? Good luck!

Offleyhoo · 24/02/2025 22:24

I think A&E surely, that's not right at all, especially with no known cause. She might have ingested something caustic. Hope she's ok.

Thank you, Somebody else mentioned this and i think you may be right! Still waiting for 111 but i think we will just go to the GP first thing!

? I had Scarlett fever…first sign was swollen and very (Scarlett) red all over, including entire tongue. Then it peels. Not like that. And whole body peels like sun burn peeling. And itching. Even my palms of hands and tongue itching.

really this looks like a specific burn on end of tongue - like she’s tasted something acidic or alkaline and spat out. Or infection got in where thst cut is, but seems too fast.

A and E . Now

NotVeryFunny · 24/02/2025 22:27

As you don't know what has happened I would go to A&E. As PPs) have says it could be a burn or she's ingested something. I would want a medical processional to look at it asap.

Pieceofpurplesky · 24/02/2025 22:27

That looks so painful poor thing. Is there an out of hours number you can ring?

Marshbird · 24/02/2025 22:29

I wouldn’t bother with 111..just get to A and E

if you had a burn that size proportionally as an adult you need to go to A and E…Bigger than 10p on adult.

if it’s contact burn, it needs sorting now urgently.
